  1. P&B Cup - The Final

    .....and the winner is...

    Curmudgeon

The reigning Cup holder has his name etched onto the trophy once again, and does so with an expert performance.

A tight final, as expected. All the way into the middle game that is, when Curmudegon - already a pawn up - took the onus with a nifty central pawn move. All hell broke loose after that.

In the end game I was just chasing shadows, trying to avoid the inevitable. My opponent didn't put a foot wrong.

    Well played @Curmudgeon.

A well deserved victory, and thank you again for the game!

You're doing yourself a massive disservice. I got careless with my pawns a couple of times and you played a great game and took advantage of my errors.

I've been let off the hook with your timekeeping so I've sent out an invite for the rematch as it's the least you deserve.

    A gentleman's offer for you @pleslie99

Your game versus @Curmudgeonwas intriguing and even-stevens IMO.

Reminder that the other semi has yet to get under way,  so plenty time. No rush.

Talking of which, I have a reasonable amount of signups for next season, there's still room for more. Anyone new to the league, or returning from previous seasons is more than welcome to join in. In particular, I've not had any response from the following as to whether they're in or out this season:

    @Trogdor @the tungston weasel @SweeperDee @Frank Grimes @Leicesterlichtie @HulltoonDee @free beer

You can include @weeyin13in for next season @Aim Here

  4. P&B Cup Winter 23-24

So, just waiting for the @Leicesterlichtie@Aim Heregame to declare and we'll have the semi-final line-up.

Can see that game is well under way, no rush guys: https://www.chess.com/game/daily/621398821

    Spreadsheet updated here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17WN7fAFWHEjwEFmI5JgTBs95NbaGBGkqpnReiRmCfkQ/edit#gid=861550279

While we wait for that outcome - if anyobody who isn't  @Curmudgeon, @pleslie99or either of the players in the live game would like to step forward and volunteer to make the draw for the semi, that would be much appreciated.

    First to respond gets it.

Well played. It felt apt to offer the draw on move 80.

I thought I was winning that ending but I must have miscounted the advance of my e pawn. I was convinced I could get it promoted before your a pawn. Then I wasn't so sure. As soon as it comes off we are hurtling towards a draw save for a tactical Knight fork either way.

Congratulations on the title. Well earnt, you managed to navigate your way through all the threats and traps I attempted to setup in that.

Thanks for the kind words @Trogdor.  I'm sure we'll have some great matches going forward.

I'm also sure we can both thank @Aim Herefor his excellent work with organising and maintaining this league.

    Truly appreciated.

The final position clearly is a draw.

So I was playing through all the lines at that point, but TBF reckoned black was still able to at least get "une poursuite constante", or even force a draw by insufficent material, whichever way white moved the king.

Not 100% certain on that, and TBF I was glad to stop having to think about it when the white king moved as it did.

I was there for the taking earlier, but that's more a stategic late-game assessment.

Was pretty tight until @EvilScotsman gave up his Queen (which I would’ve classed as a blunder but apparently not according to the analysis). Thanks for the game

Thanks for letting me know the result @pleslie99.

Just had a look at the match, and TBF I'm not sure I've seen a pawn so far up by move 13, causing all sorts of trouble !

Another great game v an opponent who even when points/pieces down still puts you in trouble by asking all the right questions.

Thanks to @Ken Deans for the match. Haven' t looked at the review yet, but several times I thought you had me there.

Take care neebor and here's to our  next match.

...sorry don't know how to type or explain moves...

...I am trying to improve so any tips, feedback, all is appreciated.

Hey @BaSeDG0DSA1NT, there's a pretty decent guide on notation right here:

    https://chessily.com/learn-chess/chess-notation/

The almost exclusive way of recording moves these days is the "algebraic" notation. This is how chess.com records the moves. Where:

    K: King
    Q: Queen
    R: Rook
    B: Bishop
    N ( or sometimes Kt ) : Knight
    Pawn: No Notation.
    x: Captures
    O-O or O-O-O: castles

And so on. You can find out the rest via the link.

Clearly there can be two Rs, 2Bs and 2Ns on the board, so refer to the "ambiguous moves" section for how that is handled.

Of course just to complicate things, there is/was also another, less-fashionable way to record the moves, referred to as the "Descriptive Notation".

This is how things are written in my copy of this book, an original published in the early seventies (a highly recommended read btw):

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fischer-Spassky-World-Chess-Championship/dp/4871875148/ref=sr_1_1?crid=PQCI3TLFQ0M3&keywords=fischer+v+spassky+gligoric&qid=1706901071&sprefix=fischer+v+spassky+gligoric%2Caps%2C101&sr=8-1

Showing my age, but we were still using the Descriptive when I was at school. Takes a bit of mind-adjustment to switch between the two.

Stick with the algebraic I'd say. The older style is gradually disappearing and will most likely only appear in old books/games from now on.

    P&B Cup

No rush guys, but if there's only one game left by this weekend we'll go for a Cove / Brora thing and just draw the next round anyways.

    P&B Cup

    Apologies for the delay.

Cost me another £2, but I reckoned I best take it before the kid starts demanding more - like £3,  or a meta-headset thingy.

    Bairns, eh?

Anyways, here's what she pullled out the bag this time.

  11. Looks like my game v AH13STU ended as a win for me as my opponent timed out.

Up to my opponent what he thinks of that. I'm sure there were reasons. Should be noted that due to mistakes I was at a disadvantage in the match.

    Three options:

    1) Rules are rules

    2) Play to the last position and take it from there

    3) Start again

So sorry about the delay, but no result to post till @Leicesterlichtiechooses from the above.

As I see it, we only have the @Leicesterlichtiev @Ken Deansgame to declare, a game which looks to be still very much alive:

Spreadsheet updated with results so far. Hopefully I've got them all correct so far!

Do let me know asap if any of those results are incorrect.

    Cheers!
