We were off the pace in the first half. Too many passes not finding their man. Dumbarton were hard and up for it and because we were below par, I didn't grudge them their half-time advantage.
Second half, Montrose dominated but couldn't find the net and that failure cost us the points. Yes, the referee was appalling and the less said about the opposition the better.

It simply doesn't matter how much is stacked against us, there's no point greetin' about it. The Mo need to defend better against set pieces and get the ball in the back of the net, plain and simple... if only!

Airdrie were time wasting as soon as they went 2 up against us a couple of weeks back, it's part of the game you need to deal with.

Was just about to say this... since Ian Murray left Dumbarton we haven't done enough of the "dirty" side of things. Nice to see Faz bringing back the kind of things every other team seems to do against us! I also enjoy that Faz has introduced the multi-ball system at home too. Well overdue that we returned the favour to other teams who have used it effectively against us for the last few years.

  2. The guys around me thought it was offside but I also thought he got a touch on the ball. Ref gave it and the linesman (who was in the perfect position) appears to have missed both the offside and the touch on the ball.

We weren't really good enough but we had a chance up until that point really. Cove didn't look that good at all but they got the goals in the first half to make them comfortable.

Ref also completely bottled it from sending off Morgan Neill and also McAllister late on for his deliberate hand ball.

To sum up, the Ref ruined any chance we had of getting something, despite us not being great.

Quite clear for me after watching the highlights that MacLean's tripped Wardrop and conned the ref by feigning an injury. It's still a bit clumsy from Wardrop to commit there on a booking when we've got a fairly comfortable 2-0 lead, but he's really not done anything wrong. Ultimately we should be doing much much more to hold onto a 2-0 lead with 10 men and I thought Murray's subs were very poor in that regard.

I know still images are generally a very poor way of judging a challenge in football but this being the moment of contact quite clearly shows MacLean sticking his leg out as Wardrop runs by him to the side. Really poor decision.

I'd say the main point of this debate is that nothing is clear. Even when slowed right down it isn't obvious. Do you really think he was only booked because Maclean exaggerated how hurt he was??

This was no clearer than the penalty award you guys got in your favour - which also looked a bit soft and resulted in a booking but additionally a penalty and goal for you guys.

They just about even themselves out as both could have been given or not on another day.

McLean cheated, by diving then rolling about. Simple. He even got up and forgot he was injured, before lying back down again. Proper small club mentality to endorse that and celebrate a draw like a win. I remember paul mcgrillen cheating to get a player sent off vs Falkirk years ago and his popularity plummeted with our support as a result. Penalty was a stonewaller, keeper ran out, made contact and impeded mcgill. 10 times out of 10 that is given.

Anyways, we were streets ahead of Dumbarton once we got going after a shaky start. They didnt look like scoring bar 1 chance in the first 5 min and our defence looked comfortable, bar Wardrop. Can say the players should have seen it out but Murray never helped them with his bizarre substitutions. Maybe Murray will learn if a defender is on a yellow and you have a like for like sub, then fucking use him! Onwards and upwards.

    Calm down there David 🤣

    1 hour ago, David_86 said:

Are you actually insinuating it wasnt an out and out dive? Why did McLean need reminded from a team mate his leg was sore and he needed to hit the deck again?

Obviously you lot will struggle this year going by that performance and you are desperate for any result you can get, no matter how it comes. Seems you have turned into a proper tinpot club.

Big team syndrome much? I'm sure Airdrie will walk the league based on the players they have in their squad 🙄 and we will look forward to a relegation battle 😬.

How are the league standings looking so far?

So 'clumsy' that he never even touched him. Ref was conned. I'd go even further asto say that the rest of the Dumbarton players conduct in chasing the ref to get the second yellow was very unsportsman like.

Fairly selective screenshot that. Don't think it is as black and white as that would suggest though...

it is obvious now that the ref was conned, but the main blame lies with Wardrop for attempting the challenge when there was no real threat.

In terms of management I think 90% of us would have subbed him before it happened, maybe Murray will learn yesterdays events for future games. Dumbarton are no different from other sides in the league, they will look to exploit any percieved weakness in the opposition. I hope that Wardrop does not become too much of a focus by our future opponents.

With regard to weaknesses I'm sure other managers will have noticed how easy it was to score from a header at a set piece yesterday. Simple blocking by the Dumbarton players to allow a free header and a resulting goal....all too easy in my opinion. As the excellent commentators put it, 'I think Airdrie are going to be one of these sides who will have to score frequently as they look like a team that will concede'.

Are you serious? 😂 if he was conned for that then he was conned for the penalty (even moreso). I don't think we had to target Wardrop to be honest, it was a clumsy challenge but if we had put Maclean on the opposite side then Quitongo would have done the exact same thing. Our player was smart and got himself between the ball and the challenge.

The Airdrie team (and bench) seemed to be pretty angry all day yesterday and they lost their heads. That is what cost you guys the victory in my opinion.

On another day the penalty isn't given and Wardrop gets a warning for the challenge on MacLean imo. To be fair, having seen the highlights, I can see why Barry Cook gave both decisions - and I don't think either side can complain about them too much. They got themselves into the situation and gave the referee a decision to make. In the end it evened itself out I suppose.

I understand why Sam is pee'd off on Instagram given it was Barry Cook who only booked Brian Graham for fracturing his eye-socket mind you. You would feel a real sense of injustice.

That sort of attitude is probably how they managed to chuck away a dominant position and two goal lead. There's very little between all the teams at this level this year and, after Airdrie's pumping last week, I'm not quite sure why Gabby McGill expected them to turn us over this week. Christ even Duffy's Sons beat Airdrie this time last year!

Just watched through it and actually agree 100%. Both could have gone either way on another day. A bit clumsy in both cases.

I enjoyed how bitter Murray was😄. He didn't admit that the pen was soft and points out that "their (our) 'keeper ran half the length of the park to tell the ref to give the booking" yet didn't mention any of his own players behaviour at that point. Needs to take off the tinted specs and stop being such a bitter dick.

Yeah, that interview was a bit surprising to me. Saying that "we need to be seeing off 'these' teams" is pretty disrespectful and he could be doing with winding in the his neck and stopping with the Billy big baws attitude because at this level there isn't going to be too much between any of the sides.

The most refreshing thing about today is not playing hoofball. Seeing us play the ball on the deck is pleasing, as is our ability to actually score goals. Five goals in two games when it took eight games to achieve that last season is night and day stuff.

I mean, we were way off the pace for most of today and but for the sending off would probably not have scored at all. We certainly need another creative option in the form of a goalscorer. We missed McKee a lot today and were doing lots of the basics poorly.

But I agree, that game last year finishes with us gaining zero points, regardless of a sending off for the opposition.

I'm sure the Dumbarton fans are enjoying the seeth from the Airdrie support. But I was livid.

Rolling about in front of the support only to stop have a wink and laugh at the Airdrie support then return to rolling about. Quite frankly I think if that's caught on camera he should get banned.

If someone cheats like that against you, you're raging. If it's one of your players you can can sit back and enjoy the rage of the opposition.

It doesn't change anything really though? Just because he allegedly done this doesn't mean the yellow card wasn't the correct decision.

I have literally no idea what Murray had to complain about. It was the most obvious second yellow possible.

If anything, we had something to complain about with the penalty.

Even if he wasn't happy about the 2nd yellow. He must be forming his decision on the players reactions because there's no way he had a clear view from the other side. Very petty way to get sent off for someone who should know better.

As always, Murray had his team ready to frustrate. From the moment the first goal went in they were taking an eternity to do anything (especially the 'keeper). Came back to bite them in that they didn't do enough to prevent us equalising.

Yeah I just didn’t think there was too much in it, even for a yellow card. Might change my mind after seeing the replay though.

Did any of the officials even notice Currie picking MacLean up? I thought that was a certainty for a booking but didn’t see anything come from it.

I thought it was a yellow. Intelligent play from our player but Wardrop was sucked right into it.

Yeah for me that was as bad as the handbags stuff that went on between Quitongo and Buchanan, Geggan and McGeever. McGeever seemed to be calming him more than anything but his heads seemed to have gone.

But yeah, had to be at least a booking for me to do that.

  12. 2 minutes ago, ShineOnYouCrazyDiamonds said:

Not denying that Currie was absolutely time wasting after the red card, but I genuinely couldn't believe it when the ref booked him for it at a goal kick with Orsi still standing in his box.

I actually mentioned this today. The one where he actually booked him was where he was time wasting the least for me!

    Barry Cook... 😒

Even from an Airdrie point of view this was funny. Proper pantomime villain stuff but it makes games like this so much more entertaining.

That was definitely much more entertaining than Dumbarton v Airdrie usually is, I’ll put that down to Jim Duffy not being involved anymore. Dumbarton started well but fell out of the game after our first goal and we controlled things until the sending off. Quite a few of our players seemed to have a heads gone during and after the sending off and we never really recovered from it.

I’d need too see it back but I thought Wardrop’s sending off was quite harsh, if anything you could probably make an argument for Quitongo and Geggan being more deserving of a sending off for what happened afterwards. My highlight of the whole thing was Currie storming out his goals to pick MacLean up. Big David Hutton vibes. I think we got lucky with the penalty though so perhaps we can’t complain too much.

I’m not convinced Dumbarton would have got back into the game without the sending off but fair play to them, took their goals well and probably deserved a point in the end.

It probably wouldn’t have had a huge impact anyway but not convinced by Murray’s subs today. Gabby McGill looked done so I was surprised when he took off Gallagher first, even if he was struggling to get into the game. Bringing Scott McGill on seemed sensible to shore things up but he seemed to be playing very high up on the left, almost as a striker, which didn’t make much sense to me. Jordan Allan as the lone striker to hold the ball up was a strange one too. The goals came from set-pieces and poor defending so it probably wouldn’t have changed much anyway but it definitely didn’t help.

Just to double check, you realise it was a 2nd booking and not a straight red?

Rico was lucky to stay on really and so was the 'keeper. He was warned for time wasting 3 times before being booked (the 1st of which was in the first half!!)

I didn't even realise Easton was on the park until he was subbed off either 😂 Going by that showing we aren't exactly going to miss players like Wardrop, Quitongo and Frizzell this season though.

That has to be one of the most spineless airdrie performances i’ve saw in ages. I get that it’s the first game of the season but the full defence we’re laughing today, Watson turned his back on everything, Kerr mistiming headers and tackles, Fordyce was non existent. The fact it took Murray so long to bring on Easton is a joke, only player we have that has the ability to beat a player and take a shot. Even Frizzell was told to warm up to come on then was never seen again when we had an extra 2 subs to make? With Dumbarton beating Clyde 3-0 today i’m not feeling hopeful for next Sat

How are the former sons settling in? By all means, you guys had a poor result today but surely there'll be a bit more fight about things next week with the number of players playing against their former team?

    Other concerns are

    1.  DL signing track record - it is abysmal

    2. Playing players out of position to horseshoe others in.  Livingstone should start at LB.   We need 3 in midfield as two get overrun.   DGW must start up front rather than out wide to accommodate Jones who should only be seen as someone to come off the bench to change things

    3. DL seems totally disinterested in things.  Got that feeling last year and has continued this year

    4. The fact that me and others as a simple fans can see the problems and the management team can’t is most worrying.  Or maybe they can see but don’t have the tools at their disposal to sort

Overall a very poor start to season and only think DL has about 5-6 games to turn things around before the fans turn on him

If we had kept JD on then you could have almost quoted this word for word about him, even some of the specifics (I.e. Jones) were exact same with us. You guys should've rid yourselves if DL and I feel it could cost you dearly that he has been allowed to assemble another squad for this season.

I appreciate budgets and difficulties but surely he could have signed better than Jones and Docherty (who FWIW was great in his time with us but that was 5/6 years ago and he has only gone downhill since he left us).

One game at a time though.  Clyde will be hurting tonight, as will Airdrie, and there will need to be a similar performance next week.

Yep, I have a feeling that about half the Airdrie squad will be particularly up for it next week. Especially given their disappointing opening day result.

I would have felt better if they had drawn or scraped a win today but they will be keen to get going for the season and the guys who have worn a sons shirt in the past will feel they have a point to prove and show they haven't stepped backwards when they turned down the offers we made them.

  17. 1 hour ago, C. Muir said:

We changed plenty with 14 (I think) new signings. Problem is they don't look any better (and indeed a fair bit worse) than what was let go.

Gomis and Balatoni were 2 I was content about signing but even they were rank today.

Yeah, my main gripe is that I felt we both had the same problems last year and it wasn't all particularly to do with the squads themselves, moreso the managers who were in charge of them. As you have said, different players with the same result on the pitch from you guys. Complete contrast to ourselves in comparison to our last match a few months ago...

  18. 1 minute ago, Silverton End said:

    Will do Tam.

Signing Robert Jones is a clear sign that you guys need a managerial change.

I said this today. The fact we made (in my opinion) the right decision and got a new manager in rather than keep with Duffy will be the difference between us and Clyde. Both teams were very similar last season and I felt both needed a fresh approach to things. Clyde stuck the dinosaur that Lennon is and we didn't.

All the best but I do feel Clyde will struggle this year due to not changing enough in pre-season. It was clear you guys only just scraped avoiding the play offs last season. We were exactly the same but seem to have at least tried to do something about it.
