Think that's a bit of a stretch given Andrew Carnegie ultimately handed all his wealth away in an American context and is hence remembered as a great philanthropist. The Scottish stereotype in The Simpsons isn't Mr Burns but Groundskeeper Willie. In Star Trek it was Scotty. Don't think being miserly figured particularly prominently with either of them. Think some of Sir Walter Scott's novels had a role in building that stereotype in a UK context.

He shafted many Scottish emigrants, particularly from Fife, after they landed in the land of milk and honey, when they were left penniless and had to find their own way back home when they refused to work without Trades Union protection. He insisted on a no union policy.

When he returned home for a visit, his carriage was pelted with divits when passing through Inverkeithing by the irate locals..  The town is now affectionately known by the locals as "the divit" or "Inverdivit".

  2. After a long and sustained bout of extreme hubris and not giving a monkey's about normal, working people, finally our collective suffering will (hopefully) be over.

Whilst i didn't have them in the official Dead Pool, their demise would be more than welcome to all but their well-looked-after fellow establishment cabalists.

My views on what happens elsewhere are immaterial - although my constant support of the EU will give you an idea of where my thinking lies.  Partitioning Britain - driven by the vile politics of identity and division - is regressive.

By inference, and substantiated by the complete dearth of a critique in any shape or form by you, you fully support the heinous actions made by the current (and their co-cabalists for the past 12 years) incumbents at Westminster where they have pulled up their financial drawbridge to ensure normal, ordinary people are chasing scraps and suffering, whilst you/they and their ilk maximise their progression financially.

Not so much the actions of the Tartan Gonks, but the Westminster Wankers and the Bucks Bawbags.

  4. Just watched University Challenge for the first time in ages, mainly because St Andrews University were on.  Was immediately struck by the normally sharp and sometimes intrusive delivery of Jeremy Paxman being impeded due to his Parkinson's Disease onset.  A visible and audible example of how this horrific disease can impact an otherwise cogent and articulate orator.   Chapeau to Paxman for continuing in his role whilst the disease is at an early (??) stage.
