  1. I am a big fan of American Football and agree that the principle of "giving the best to the worst in the hope of levelling the playing field" is a great concept. Hard to get it working in football though as the NFL is the biggest gig in town and thereby attracts all the best players from college no way could Scottish Football compete and the labour laws in Europe wouldn't allow the type of agreement that the NFL and players have with the Collective Bargaining. Pity as I would like to see the convergence of the teams on a financial and ability level.

    Some half measures ARE available:

    - gate sharing

    - flat distribution of TV/naming rights/ etc money.

Ina SPL context - with its c. 50 million GBP turnover Celtic would still be light years ahead of the rest, while the "best of the rest" like Hearts, Aberdeen or Dundee would see their c.8-10 million unaffected (or make minmal gains).

It would be the 4-5 million crowd which would gain the most.

Hence it would be 2nd to 12th mob drawing closer. Which could be a Good Thing in itself.

  2. Aye, there's distinctly Scottish issues - in terms of population spread, tradition, crowds, quirky history of Senior/Junior football, prevalence of OF support in all towns etc - which defines how many clubs are full-time, how many come from certain areas, etc. We can't just divide England by 10.

Certainly a pyramid system would help inject the opportunity for equity.

For example there are 2 teams from Dundee but only 1 from Aberdeen and 2 from Edinburgh. There's no team from the Borders. Etc.

Ain't Annan near the border, and Berwick smack on top of it?

Or does Borders mean something else?

  3. Still to come:

    1) The "Criminal Investigation" into the sale of the company (Murray to Whyte).

    2) HMRC's "Forensic Investigation" into the mismanagement of the club during its last 25 years which led to its death.

    3) BDO the company contracted by HMRC to Liquidate RFC (In Administration) may decide that the 300+ creditors, including HMRC wink.gif , who all together are owed a combined total of over £140 million with interest, have been ripped off by way of serious "fraud and deception" considering the way that Duff & Phelps conducted the administration and sale off all assets to Green for next to nothing.

    4) The stripping of many titles and cups that RFC cheated to win using EBT'S - Dual-Contracts.

    5) Much more - this story has a long way to go before it ends.

But do nos. 1, 2 and 4 have any bearing on Sevco?

No. 3 doubtlessly would, and probably no. 5 also affect the newco, but the other three surely only are relevant for Rangers?

  4. It was surprising that Rangers oldco could vote on SPL newco entry, so maybe no huge shock Dundee and Airdrie can vote on SFL newco entry.

LTL is right - the whole affair is such a cesspit that gentlemany conduct can go out the window.

Why should one be nice to cads?

BTW - that latest blog by Thomson makes me think that Regan and Doncaster are doing wonders for the "Kick da Sassanech oot!" movement :D

    Longmuir ready for important day

Scottish Football League chief executive David Longmuir hopes on Friday to see a resolution to the problem of Rangers newco which will"be for the betterment" of the game in the future.

The relaunched Govan club will discover at the end of the week whether they will be playing in the Irn-Bru First Division or Third Division next season.

The vast majority of Ibrox fans favour a fresh start in the bottom tier after last week's failed bid to remain in the Scottish Premier League.

However, the First Division looks the likely destination after Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan claimed that dire financial consequences meant he could not allow AllyMcCoist's side to resume life in Division Three.

Longmuir expects to meet with Regan and Scottish Premier League chief executive Neil Doncaster over the next few days before the decision about Rangers newco is taken by the SPL [typo? shouldn't it say SFL?] board, on behalf of its members, who would then look forward to a package of reforms which are likely to include the re-introduction of play-offs and changes to the distribution of finances and votes.

Longmuir said: "Friday is a very important day for Scottish football, I will let others judge just how important.

"I expect to have meetings with the SFA and the SPL this week.

"We hope to achieve an agreement which will be for the betterment of the game in Scotland."

    [loud of cringeworthy bollocks incoming]

Former Rangers striker John MacDonald, however, is baffled by the whole situation and claims the Ibrox club have been subject to a "witch hunt".

MacDonald, who played for the Govan club in the late 1970s and1980s, said: "Are there any rules or are they making them up as they go along?

"Any notions or talk of sporting integrity has gone right out of the window.

"Rangers really should start in the Third Division and most fans want that so there will be no comeback in years to come.

"But Stewart Regan has held a gun to the head of the SFL clubs by more or less saying they have to vote Rangers into the First Division.

"So it looks like the club will be in the First Division next season."
