I don’t accept that explanation. The U.K. as a whole, and Scotland slightly more so, is increasingly secular. Religious views are (thankfully) playing a lesser rather than a greater role in our society. Doesn’t fully explain it. I get that racists often hide behind criticism of religion but doesn’t explain why political views are not being offered the same ‘protection’ as religious views. Shouting ‘little Tory b*****d’ at WDR as he runs the line on Saturday would not be prohibited under this Act.

Yes, yet the response from the U.K. government is, to say the least, muted and the response from the government-in-waiting even more so. The SNP have asked for a recall of Parliament to discuss this; the request doesn’t seem to be getting any coverage from the MSM. Our complicity in war crimes is shameful and inexplicable.

I’ve not been able to find hard figures but there have been a number of references to the fact that trading has been at a very low volume. It seems to have been mainly speculators buying then cashing in. As a result of this the stock price will be very distorted. Even if Trump has to wait out the six month lock in period as soon as he tries to sell there is likely to be a massive adjustment. If he tries to sell even 10% of his holding that would be over 6% of the total shares. I reckon the price will plummet. A further 10% divestment after that and the stock is likely to crash.

When I was in my early 60s I had concerns about going from a very full work life to having nothing to do. Fortunately the lockdowns during COVID showed me that there were positives in not having to go into work every day. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the two plus years since I’ve retired and living in a warmer climate certainly makes it easier to be physically active all year round which I think is fundamentally important. For various reasons I waited until I was almost 67 before I retired and I’d encourage anyone who can do so earlier to seize the opportunity. All going well both my sons will be able to to retire in their 50s and even if they choose to work on knowing that the option is available is beneficial. I find the only possible downside to retirement is that I sometimes procrastinate in a way that I hadn’t previously. Sometimes I’ll put off a ten minute task for days when I should really just get it out of the way.

Not every idea is idealistic. Some are the very opposite, just look at some of the ideas emanating from the MAGA camp. There are also fuckwits like Truss who would advocate similar ideas for the UK. Also many of the positives of the last 100 years are going in reverse. Universal healthcare in the UK sadly being an example. Also ideas only become realities when there’s sufficient support. Universal healthcare and retirement pensions benefited the vast majority. It’s not exactly surprising that people right across the wealth spectrum want to leave something to their kids/grandkids when they die. Whilst people may be willing to support reform of inheritance tax I don’t see a set of circumstances where a majority will support a 100% tax.

By all means argue for an idealistic objective, nothing wrong with that. However it’s not achievable. I think it’s better to advocate for something more realistic that could win public support and have an actual impact. There is not going to be a global solution, however wonderful and worthwhile that would be, and sadly even a U.K. approach is going to be determined by a Conservative or a conservative Labour government so I don’t see it being as radical as it could and should be. I don’t think an Independent Scotland is going to be some utopian Socialist Republic but there’s a chance that it might be willing to take a bit more of a progressive position.

I reckon Raith will drop a handful of points. Though I realise that means something different to Fifers than it does to the rest of us.

Not sure if looking at wealth/earnings in U.K. or any other similar country and comparing it global wealth and earnings is practical within the context of this discussion. I also think that a 100% inheritance tax is fanciful and would have virtually no support. That would mean someone who has worked hard all their days and leaving a modest sum (say for discussions sake £20k or £50k) to their kids would be treated the same as someone leaving £10m. It would also be fairly easily circumvented. Surely a more practical and enforceable process would be more desirable and gain more support. Something that is based on a progressive scale rather than across the board.
