  1. After reading an interview with PP Arnold in this month's Uncut, I listened to Marchin' Already by Ocean Colour Scene for the first time in a very long time this morning. The album is patchy, but It's A Beautiful Thing is magnificent.
  2. Guns N Roses are an obvious one.
  3. 1 (1) Arbroath 10 points, +7GD 2 (6) Dumbarton 7 points, +2GD 3 (2) Forfar 7 points, 0GD 4 (5) Airdrie 6 points, +2GD 5 (7) East Fife 6 points, 0GD 6 (9) Stenny 6 points, -2GD 7 (3) Raith 5 points, +2GD 8 (8) Stranraer 4 points, -1GD 9 (10) Brechin 0 points, -9GD A pretty dismal record in the Angus coastal derby this season, with just the one point. But only Arbroath, Dumbarton and Forfar took more than half of the available points from us in our first season outside the bottom league in a generation. And we did a clean sweep over Brechin.
  4. Off the top of my head: Everything ever released by Bruce Springsteen - fairly acceptable bar-room rock, but by no means genius. Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits - see above. Is This It by The Strokes - just gash. Tuneless, whiny drivel. Last Nite is not bad, the rest is pish. There's a Riot Goin' On by Sly and The Family Stone - maybe I just didn't get it, but I heard nothing on this one that made me ever want to hear it again. Any album by Belle and Sebastian - twee pish. Just f**k off. And another vote for Pet Sounds - 12 tracks of filler surrounding one piece of stone cold genius.
  5. Not too shabby a year for music. Having deliberated, cogitated and digested, here are my top 20 albums of the year: 1. Shame - Songs Of Praise2. Boy Azooga - (One) (Two) (Kung Fu)3. Kamasi Washington - Heaven and Earth 4. B.C. Camplight - Deportation Blues 5. Welles - Red Trees and White Trashes 6. Kyle Falconer - No Thank You 7. Wooden Shjips - V. 8. Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino 9. Greta Van Fleet - Anthem Of The Peaceful Army 10. Spiritualized - And Nothing Hurt 11. The Coral - Move Through The Dawn 12. The Filthy Tongues - Back To Hell 13. Aidan Moffat & RM Hubbert - Here Lies The Body 14. Beak> - >>> 15. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Wrong Creatures 16. Tim Burgess - As I Was Now 17. Muse - Simulation Theory 18. Miles Kane - Coup De Grace 19. Jonathan Wilson - Rare Birds 20. The Vryll Society - Course Of The Satellite
  6. I've never really understood how or why Snow Patrol made it massive. Some of their early stuff like 100 Things You Should Have Done In Bed was decent - quite growly, sarcy tunes. Then they seemed to vanish for a bit before coming back as a less interesting Travis. But I suppose they're one of those bands that hit on a formula for success and just kept doing it (see also Travis, Kings Of Leon, Oasis, Elbow after TSSK).
  7. One of the best live bands I've ever seen. Saw them at The Venue in Edinburgh before their first album out. A tiny place, totally sold out, sweat dripping off the ceiling. They filled the stage with smoke, backlit it and played one of the best gigs I've ever seen. Especially by a band who I'd only heard one song from at that point. Saw them another couple of times after that. Best (apart from that first time in Edinburgh) was at the Barrowlands.
  8. If you were going to create a Mount Rushmore of music, which four people's faces would you have on it? Not just Americans, but you need to pick individual band members where necessary. No more than four individuals. I'd go with Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
  9. I've never found a pair of wireless headphones that can match my PSB MSU2s for sound quality.
  10. Had my laptop a few years but in the last few months the fan has become unbearably loud. It tends to kick in hard when I start FM16, and just to stay at its fastest setting from then on. It's driving me mad - it's so loud I can't hear the tv because of it. I've tried cleaning it out with compressed air, and that's done nothing to help. It always sits on a USB powered fan cooling tray. Any suggestions on ways to shut it up without frying the laptop? It already has as much RAM as the motherboard can handle. Would replacing the HDD with SSD do anything to help? It's a quadcore processor, the only other thing I can think of doing is reducing database size on fm16 and seeing if that reduces the demand on the processor.
  11. Not the worst refereeing performance ever, but we should have had a penalty when the keeper took Fraser out in the first half, and the challenge that looks like it might have broken Bolo's leg/ankle should have been a red.
  12. No complaints about the result today, the better side one. Dodgy refereeing and worrying injuries at the end though. My report is here: http://groaninjock.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/season-20162017-match-2-montrose-0-2.html
  13. Although it was a defeat, I thought there were a lot of positives for Montrose today. Defence looked much stronger than last season, midfield had a bit of spark, Millar was excellent in goals. Strikers struggled a bit, which I would put down to fitness as much as anything. I'd be keen to see some more options up top though. My 'report' is here: http://groaninjock.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/season-20162017-match-1-montrose-0-1.html
