  1. I had a valid excuse but I'm not sure the same could be said for them - I thought they didn't do walking away? As I walked past the Rugby Road turnstiles they were leaving in their droves. Very, very pleasing.
  2. Wasn't looking forward to this one at all. Given the issues that seemed to have persisted with the midfield following the LC group stage and the horrific draw for the second round I just wanted to get this game over and done with. However, after the usual away day enthusiasm from the Chadwick Stand had dissipated after around 20 minutes, the Rangers crowd were fairly quiet - as were their team. I thought Rangers played like a team who didn't know each other and there may be something about this since they had only played in friendlies prior to today, whereas Killie had actually played competitive games. Yes, the LC group stage opponents may not have quite been of the same stature as Rangers, but I think that still counted for something. Can't believe how wasteful Rangers were in front of goal, and I thought we more than matched them in terms of endeavour, cohesive play and team spirit. Not a single player in (blue and white) stripes was poor today. Absolutely delighted to have been there for that today, and to have inflicted the first defeat on Rangers on the first day of the season for 20 years is a bit special. I hope every single Killie fan has had a brilliant night tonight, and I'll definitely go into work tomorrow morning with a slightly sore head as well as a wee spring in my step. One last thing - as I was playing a gig in the town tonight, I had to leave the game bang on 90 minutes (of all the games etc...) and while walking towards the town I overtook a father and son in matching Rangers third shirts. As I walked past them, the wee man asked his dad, "why did we have to lose to them?" ...GIRFUY wee man - you'll never take the Killie!
  3. McInroy will do very well for you. I was frustrated that he didn't get a chance at all with us - there must have been a fallout between him and McInnes because it's the only explanation as to why guys who weren't as good as him were starting and he was nowhere to be seen. Alston is also reliable at Championship level and won't let you down.
  4. Can't say I'm too thrilled about Donnelly resigning - we've needed to clear out the midfield and start again, and now it transpires that we've kept most of them. This was one area where we clearly weren't good enough last season, so I'm starting to have slight worries about this given the tough start we've got in our first 4 games. My hope is that we can get a striker of decent repute in (would be very happy if this is Sam Cosgrove as is rumoured elsewhere) and most of last year's midfield are on the bench for the most part.
  5. An Ayrshire derby or Airdrie, please and thank.
  6. No prizes for flair, but that's us over the line now. Shame we couldn't make it 4 wins out of 4, but it's done and we can look forward to the draw tomorrow. And finally, I've said it before and I've said it again - at least we're not St. Johnstone.
  7. Disappointed with that game tonight - Rovers played well and we let them into the game in the second half. We're missing some bite and I suspect if Vassell had played tonight we'd have had that extra bit of quality to see it off. Alas - death, taxes and the stripes losing penalty shootouts are the only certainties you're guaranteed in this life. Credit to the Raith support who were noisy and backed their team well. On to Saturday and what has now become a must-win game, and our chances of finishing as a seeded team are evaporating fast. Ah well, at least we're not St. Johnstone.
  8. Brilliant photo - while I never went to Love Street when it was a big bowl-shaped ground, I do miss the old place. Have also bowled at Caledonia BC which is just to the right of Love Street many a time and had some good drinking days in there. A great bunch of lads.
  9. Heard the rumour out of the blue last night and I'm delighted that Stuart's back for the season. This has made me feel a lot more optimistic after the supposed lack of tactics from the team in the Norn Iron friendlies.
  10. I'm in that minority too - on a home kit it's a cardinal sin, but on an away kit I don't really have an issue with it provided it doesn't totally ruin the crest itself. I'm fine with it being a bit mad. I think away kits should be a bit wild from time to time. Give me a traditional-looking home kit and a wild away/third kit every time.
  11. Our new away kit, inspired by local boy Sir Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin has been inveiled: It's a bit mental, but I don't mind it. Not one for the purists, but an away kit should have licence to be a bit wild every so often.
  12. I've only ever sat in the main stand and Fair Play stand at Tannadice and when you've got a big away support in the FP with a slight overflow into the main stand it's some noise when you score. Mind you, I'm mainly basing this on my team's two most recent visits to Dundee United and not the third most recent where they absolutely gubbed us, and deservedly so... I don't think I'll ever be afforded the opportunity to see a game as an away fan from the shed, but with a big crowd in a covered (former) terrace you can generate a hell of a lot of noise.
  13. I maintain that there is no "right" way to play football other than the way that wins you games. For some teams who are blessed with world-class players, that may be tiki-taka. For us, it's the current system that affords versatility in going from defensive to attacking phases of play. Add to that, Clarke's coaching sessions are so good because by the day of the game every player knows the system and exactly where they fit into the system. It was the same at Kilmarnock - and while things changed more quickly at Rugby Park, the impact that Clarke has had on Scotland is nothing short of seismic. This team is so composed on the ball and has a definite swagger against most sides we come up against. I was gutted to lose him at Killie, but I had the best consolation of all when he went to Scotland. Now everyone can enjoy the fruits of his labour. This is the best Scotland team I have ever seen and I absolutely cannot wait to see us playing again in September. I love this team, I love these players and I love Steve Clarke. There may be bumps in the road, but I have every faith in him to overcome them like he did last summer and have us coming back stronger.
  14. I'm really sad that Craig is no longer with us - Scottish football is poorer for having lost him. My first memories of watching Scotland were his teams at the Euros in 1996 and the World Cup in 1998, and as a wee boy in 98 I remembered the euphoria and the buzz around the whole country as a result of his work. Some might have decried his style of play as being too defensive, but he knew how to get the best out of his teams and gave us a Scotland team that was worth shouting about. As I grew older and saw him at Rugby Park with Motherwell and later Aberdeen, I always held him in high admiration and watching him celebrate Motherwell's 6th goal in the 6-6 game was special. The kind of moment that you can't help but smile at when you watch it back. I had the privilege to meet Craig on a number of occasions through work, firstly when he appeared on a podcast I hosted to talk about his time as Scotland assistant and later manager. He was incredibly generous with his time and we were still chatting away long after the recording finished about all things football. Last year, Craig came to Hampden with Archie Knox, Frank Coulson and Dick Campbell with Frank's Football Memories group from Stranraer and you could tell that everyone was hanging onto his every word whenever he spoke. The old guys loved it and so did I - it was an amazing thing to be a part of. I also had a surreal moment when I took the group round the stadium and Craig told me that he learned a fair bit from my tour. It must have been a bit strange, going round his old place of work that he would have been very familiar with, but he was genuine when he said that to me. I'll probably never have another day at my work like that, and it'll live with me forever. What a life he lived. Rest easy Craig, you'll be sorely missed.
  15. I don't consider myself to have a chip on the shoulder about many things in life. Wales being consistently better at international football than Scotland, however, was the one big thing that really irked me - especially since we knew that they were a largely ordinary squad with a very good player in Ramsey and a world-class player in Bale. Before we had them in the qualifiers in 2012 and 2013 I couldn't have cared much, but the way they embarrassed us before having their fans really rub our faces in it was sickening to me. I didn't mind seeing them do well up to a point at the major tournaments, although I'd have happily had them beat England at Euro 2020. As soon as Bale retired, we suspected that they'd start to fall down the rankings - but seeing them fall so hard and knowing that we're the best we've been for quite some time is so, so pleasing. I hope that we get a chance to play them soon, because I would love to see a Clarke team absolutely scud them and do what they did to us a decade ago.
  16. Now you've got me excited! He knows what he's doing, so I have faith in him.
  17. It's a 5.5-6/10 for me. Not a fan of the red in the Hummel logo or the pinstripe in the collar, would have been nicer in yellow or in gold. Apparently the third (bus seat) kit is being slightly tweaked as well as having the new sponsor's logo put onto it - perhaps a slight change in the colour of the wee chevrons/triangles? We'll see tomorrow.
  18. Looks like we're interested in signing Matty Kennedy according to the P&J. I'd be happy with this.
  19. I personally thought it was because the poppy-shaggers would think they would look a bit like poppies for War Christmas Remembrance Sunday.
