I would double check it is actually with them. The landlord is supposed to give you certain info including the deposit ID number etc, might just be a term in a standard lease they use for everyone. You can apply to have it released to you when the tenancy ends and the landlord can dispute it and vice versa.

The deposit should be lodged with scheme which arbitrate on disputes. Should the landlord have failed to do this, you can sue for three times the original amount. Dampness in the flat can yield claims against the landlord even if you havent suffered any injury or loss. Normally need evidence of notification of the problem and some sort of expert(ish) independent confirmation. Fire off an application to the Private Rented Housing Panel who can inspect and order the landlord to fix it. Also can be relied upon for a claim. Unfortunately takes about 8 weeks to go through the process.
