  1. Poll edited! Since I started this topic in 2015 eurasian beaver have become a native species. There is however still a long way to go. The relocation of beaver to new catchments across Scotland is proving to be a tedious and unnecessarily long process, despite the animal being granted native status several years ago. We are of course still missing a vital cog in the ecosystem wheel - an apex predator. One can only hope that common sense prevails and lynx are reintroduced in the very near future, and hopefully with that the wolf will follow.

I tried to update the poll to add Eurasian elk in - another lost keystone species that went extinct here 2000 - 3000 yrs ago - however it doesn't seem to work. I'll maybe write a piece on here about elk or do a video about them one day.

@jamamafegan great video and congrats on getting to see such great views of the eagles.

My big concern about ecotourism is treating these creatures as a spectacle and experience rather than an important part of a larger ecosystem.

I guess my concern is people hunting them for pictures and disturbing habitats. People will do anything for Instagram pictures. It's a misanthropic take, I'll admit.

    Cheers mate.

I think education and respect is the key really. Nothing wrong at all with enjoying the experience and spectacle of wildlife as long as it's done in a respectful way. It's a great way to teach people about the role and importance of different species in their ecosystem.

You are right though, some folk will inevitably go to great lengths to look for them. There was a wildlife photographer charged earlier this year for disturbing a capercaillie lek. There was also a couple of other guys caught doing something similar, they then uploaded a bizarre apology video as if they were being held at gunpoint warning other people not to come to Scotland to seek out these birds.

I think your typical instagrammers won't go rummaging around the undergrowth off path for lynx, more likely a rogue wildlife photographer. Lynx are so secretive and stealthy that I think the majority of people would struggle to find them anyway.

  3. Awful, awful dogs - I welcome a ban. There is absolutely no need to own dogs like these. Owners trying to pass them off as “lovable, cuddly goofballs” - idiots. Why don’t you get a lovable, cuddly goofball of a dog that isn’t a 100% muscle killing machine, countless other breeds to pick from.

  4. It's a big no from me. He's rejected our advances before on two occasions I believe and only now when Scotland are doing well and he misses out on an England call up he gives us consideration. This is an Englishman who cares more about playing international football than representing Scotland and what it mean to put on the shirt. We already spent years in the doldrums selecting English players with Scottish grannies and it got us absolutely nowhere. We have a squad of players now with an incredible team spirit who all know just what it means to play for Scotland. We don't need Harvey Barnes.

A few steps I have taken recently to reduce my plastic use:

Use canvas bags for my shopping. I’ve got a few that I leave in the car. I refuse to use plastic bags, there’s no need for it. I was dismayed yesterday when I noticed the CO-OP weren’t using the green biodegradable bags in my local store and have gone back to plastic. I am going to investigate this.

Using soap from Lush. It’s stored in a metal tin. It’s not cheap though and I was considering packing it in if it doesn’t last a month but it looks like I’ll be fine. Get a good wash out of it as well.

My next toothbrush will be a wooden/bamboo one. Holland & Barrett do them I think so going to have a look today. Will need to read about how it’s produced and and how sustainable it is if it’s getting exported here.

Remembered this thread after seeing the 'Disposable Vapes' discussion earlier today. I've recently been carrying out a eco-friendly transition on my toiletries. In addition to the soap tin and bamboo toothbrush mentioned above, I've recently purchased:

A re-fillable deodorant stick. There are a few options but I went with Fussy because I prefer the design of the stick and the scents they do. Anyone who fancies trying it send me a PM and I'll give you a 50% referral discount code.

Georganics toothpaste in a glass jar, 100% recyclable and vegan.

Waken Mouthwash. I haven't bought this yet but will when my current stuff runs out. 100% recycled plastic bottle, carbon neutral, vegan and made with natural products. Optional metal serving cup which looks nifty.

  6. Totally in favour of this. I hate vapes. We shouldn’t stop there though, we should banning as many single use items as we can. Transitioning to a societal way of thinking where we reuse things or at least use things that are 100% recyclable is the right way forward.

  7. New video is up! This time it’s a brief discussion about the value and potential of ecotourism in Scotland. I believe rewilding offers opportunities not just for wildlife but for people too, and one of these benefits is through ecotourism. It can lead to new jobs, a new source of income and new opportunities for communities, all the while providing an environment which is richer with wildlife that everybody can enjoy. Hope you all enjoy the video. Not to be missed by my fellow rewilding fans of P&B (or indeed a fan of my hair if you are @101).

Are you not an Everton fan?

I used to be mad into them but my interest for them and the #barclays has waned over the years.

The Irony being that the much lauded English Premiership, the last bastion of all that's good, honest and fair in the World is owned by American Hedgefunds, Russian Oligarchs, Gangsters and the very same Middle Eastern Governments and their agents that many find so disgusting........

Yeah I'm not some sort of EPL fanboy, European football at the elite level is broken. Despite what it's become, at least English football has a rich heritage and history. The Saudi League for me has nothing at all.

  9. Anyone who takes even the slightest bit of interest in this farce of a league needs to go and have a word with themselves. I'm not having this "what's wrong with wanting to watch some of the best players in world football" pish - if that's your mentality then you have been truly suckered by the Saudi sports-washing machine. Treat this competition with the contempt it deserves.

  10. Bump.

Okay, they aren’t out yet - but that is a total shocker from Hibs. It’s another humiliating result for a Scottish team in Europe. Comfortably beaten by a pub team at an Andorran leisure centre with actual farm animals loitering around the ground.  Even if Hibs do go through (which at this stage I have no reason to believe they will) they are going to get destroyed by their next opponents.

What on earth is going on?
