I see David Hopkin was watching the match today. Please for the love of god tell me it’s not going to be him

I saw Neuijten confirm Hopkin was 'helping him out' in his interview before the game tonight. As if that's not bad enough it's typical of Queen's atm to only find this out through the coach being asked a direct question about Hopkin on the tele. Hope the AGM goes well next week and you can at least go some way to no longer being treated with contempt by the entirety of the club's committee.

  2. Megwa might well be off to Dubai, I hope not of course. But even if he is I certainly wouldn't be taking what some 'halfwit pretends to be ITK type' on Twitter says to be gospel. Rhys McCabe told you personally did he aye? Load of bollocks. Even if he is, they're away on the 9th and back on the 16th so if he were to go and then return to us he'd potentially only miss 1 league game. Obviously, if they keep him, with Ballantyne out for another 4-6 weeks that's potentially a bigger issue but I think Watson would be 'fine' as a stand-in until Ballantyne gets back.

If we are going down the 'Consilium Route' of signing players then Chris Donnell would be a shout.

He's a 19 year old midfielder and from watching a few videos of him playing for Fulham U21 he looks a lot more physical than a lot of our current midfielders we have. From the highlights video I can see a lot of similarities to Justin Devenny.

Downside he is Australian so let's just hope he's no Frankie Lagana or a Big Byrd 2.0.

Would imagine he’d be outwith our budget but Ben Wilson was a Consillium player who caught my eye. Striker who’s scored 16 goals in 21 games for Cliftonville so far this season (according to Google). Bit skeptical about how goals at that level would translate to the Scottish Championship but don’t think it’d be that far off this level.

Happy to be shot down in flames, but here’s a loan shout: Charlie Reilly. Hasn’t broken into Dundee’s team as yet, clearly knows where the net is and single handedly gave the Rovers a chance of staying above the trap door last season.

Would also take a punt on Joe Bevan, but in that vain outwith the big teams in each league there isn’t a clear goalscorer emerging that we could poach in a Jan window.

Reilly seems like an ideal shout. His team mate Luke McCowan is on Consillium's books so I'd imagine he's more likely 😉 Speaking of which I was having a look at their list of players. Sean Moore ticks a lot of boxes -

    Consilium - ✅
Northern Irish + Northern Irish youth international - ✅
    Winger (that can play full-back) - ✅
Plays for West Ham - ✅

I agree with the consensus that Gabby hasn't cut it so far this season. But I do think he's been done a bit of disservice with the change in style of play and his positioning on the park. Not really good enough technically to play that possession-based style, and, whilst he was a wide forward last season, he's being asked to play so far out from Gal or Todorov that they can't link up effectively through the middle or out wide. He's not an 'old-fashioned winger' so he's not going to beat a man and put balls into the box as he seems to be expected to do currently, like at Firhill for example. Worth remembering that in our first three home league games, in which we won all three, he got a goal (Thistle), assist (Raith) and was the catalyst for the OG v Inverness. I thought he was very good in the win v Dundee in the League Cup also. I'm not saying he's definitely good enough for this level or the cure for our ills but I'd like to see him get more of a sniff at least, ideally in a change of shape even if just from the bench. To not bring him on when we're chasing a goal in the last two games and to bring on Dunlop and O'Connor before him is, IMO, poor. I'd rather have chucked Gabby on than had Fordyce get in the way not winning any long balls upfront.

If he does go to Raith we either need to swap him for one of their plethora of forwards or have the transfer fee on a replacement spent before he leaves.

Actually think the way we're setting up with our wide players in general isn't working whoever we play there. They've all get assets that work in that position but none I don't think have it as a whole. McStravick's best skill is his short-passing but he can't really do that when he's isolated out wide. Think he'd be more effective playing off Gal or Todorov through the middle. McGregor is the closest we've got to a proper winger but his crossing isn't great. And O'Connor's only role is probably as an impact/chaos-ball sub.

Said it above but another forward/wide player (and a quick centre-half) have to be the priority in January.

  7. I'd still like to try the back 3/5 as I think it gets most of our best players on the park and gets the best out of them, and for me, was probably the system where we gave our most complete performances in Raith away and Arbroath at home. In theory anyway negates the problem of having no wingers or effective wide forwards and, if we can get it working like we did in the aforementioned two games there should be 2 or 3 players regularly up in support of Gal. Don't think it was a coincidence the Raith game is the one where it feels like we created the most chances in weeks. Should be a bit more compact though as we've been caught out badly with our wing-backs so far up the park in the last couple of games, the right-hand side in particular. Something like -

                                    Rae
    Megwa McCabe Fordyce ATS Hancock
                                  McMaster
                         Telfer Frizzell McStravick
                                 Gallagher

Although I wouldn't be entirely against swapping out McStravick and playing one of Todorov or Gabby upfront with Gal.

Massive blow as he's been my player of the year to date and with my next best, Murray Aiken, also still out then tomorrow's 11 is certainly not our best.

McGregor out as well therefore don't see many, if any, changes to last week's line up unless Rhys changes formation with Dunfermline looking certain to line up with 3 at the back.

Our lack of goals has been much discussed therefore I hope the manager gets his ass on the park at some point on Saturday.

I'd like to see a return to the back 3/5 that worked well v Raith and Arbroath. Think it's what is getting the best out of us at the moment. Megwa and Hancock outwide and ATS, McCabe and Fordyce in the middle. Don't think Fordyce was great last week, at the back or going forward, and the back 3/5 worked really effectively without him but I can't see him being dropped if fit. McMaster, Telfer and Frizzell in the middle. Wouldn't surprise me if we plumped for Todorov in this one given Dunfermline's 3 centre-halves are missing, though I'd personally start the ineffective Gal.

Feels like quite a big game this one. A home game and one we should be looking to win. Need to get at least a couple of wins out of these next four games. Playing three teams currently below us in the table after this weekend, so if we can put a few results together and build a bit of a gap between us and those three that would be an ideal way to see out the quarter/year.

  9. Not expecting a result here, but Thistle look to be quite up and down so no reason to be too pessimistic. Is McInroy fit?  Will be interesting to see what McCabe goes for in terms of shape and personnel with the bulk of our defence now back fit. The back 3/5 has worked really well in the last couple of league games so I suspect he'll stick with it. Seems like Fordyce, ATS, Hancock and McCabe are now all fully fit or on the verge of being so, so McCabe has options. Fordyce is still our best pure centre-half so I suspect he'll be in, although I'm not sure we're a better, or at least a quicker, attacking side with him in the team.

However the game goes, looking forward to knocking about some fine art and philosophy students on Maryhill Road.

Check the edited dates, the Raith list was current on Oct 9th, but now needs Daniel O’Reilly added (paging @R.R.FC)

For the others, if @ayrunitedfw  (13 Sept), @madton (29 Sept), @airdrieman (27 Oct), @qpfc (9 Jun), @Central Belt Caley (4 Jul), @Leedafc (5 Jun), @Fuctifano (27 Oct) could look over their posts it would update us nicely. Meanwhile, we don’t have a Dundee Utd list or an Arbroath list.

Airdrie’s is all good as of 26th November.

  11. Saw this doing the rounds on Twitter. What would be everyone’s team? Mine would probably be -
    GK - Josh Rae
    RB - Cammy Ballantyne
    LB - Paul Lovering
    CH - Callum Fordyce
    CH - Allan McManus
    DM - Marvyn Wilson
    CM - Dylan Easton
    CM - Kyle Turner
    CM - Willie McLaren
    CF - Owen Coyle
    CF - Alan Gow

I know it doesn’t ask for subs but I’d probably go for - S. Docherty, Dunn, Frizzell, Varielle, Hutton, Smith, Gallagher. Could argue for Andy Ryan or Allan Russell ahead of Smith and Gallagher but they were both only here for a season (Ryan was technically on our books during 3 different seasons but you know what I mean) so Smith and Gallagher’s relative longevity and contribution to getting us promoted sees them included. Management duo of Sandy Stewart and McCabe so I can get the latter as a player too 😉

Dick Campbell steps down after today's game,

The end of an era! Should maybe have left on a high after getting them so close to the Premier League a couple of seasons ago. Struggling at the moment so might be the right call. That being said, who they replace him with will be a huge decision. Stuart Petrie seems the obvious best candidate. If I was an Arbroath fan, Stuart Malcolm being the only coach not to resign would be a cause for concern.

The last time I was at Stair Park was a 3-2 defeat I think (Dale Carrick's debut when he scored after 2 minutes I think). Going there now 2 league above them is a nice reminder of the progress we've made. Hopefully there are no slip-ups!

As is looking through their squad. Discounting Scott Agnew former diamonds amongst them include Sean McIntosh, Scott Robertson, Grant Gallagher and Dean Hawkshaw all of whom played for us not that long ago, as recently as Murray's first season. Don't think any of them would get a game now!

I've only been to Stair Park once. Won 3-1 and Taylor Morgan chipped the goalkeeper. Thankfully wasn't there in 2003.

I dunno, I thought Cappielow was a terrible stadium when I went there at first in the late 80s/early 90s and there's not much to change that view in the intervening years. Always hated the half arsedness of it's design in comparison to beautiful symmetrical stadiums like Broomfield.

Good game today,  Cappielow has really not changed much over the years since I was first there in the 80s,  it is probably the closest park you will get to old Broomfield that is left in the game these days....

I like Cappielow although I’m not a huge fan of the main stand and the support structures that obscure your view. Football grounds should be unique and have an identity, atmosphere and history about them and I think Cappielow is and has that. A roof on the Wee Dublin End and a proper pie hut and I wouldn’t have any complaints about it. How was the game to watch from the cowshed @Passionate? Always liked the look of it in there.

  15. Thought we were the better team in the first-half and don’t think anyone could have complained had we went into half-time in front. We toiled in the second-half though. Definitely have Josh Rae to thank for getting us through. Some outstanding saves throughout the game that kept us in it and of course the final penalty (double) save once again. He gets a bit of stick but yesterday showed his worth and what a difference he makes to the team. Ballantyne and Telfer were our two best outfield players and McStravick made a difference in the short time he was on the park. Don’t think we really got going in the second-half until he was brought on. But he had them on the back-foot whenever he had the ball and our best bouts of pressure came from him.

Fun to win another shootout after our penalty woes before the play-offs and nice to be in a cup semi-final.
