Hard to say how good Portales is. Yes we’ve missed him but we’ve also had Beck and Lamie missing, Coco in goals for part of 1 game, all during a tough run of fixtures. Has he been unlucky or is he made of plasticine? I like the exotic nature of the Mexican experiment though so happy to keep him regardless. I think his Champions League aspirations are slim, probs his best chance is a strong finish to this season with us and a move to the OF.

Agree re Tiffoney and either of those line ups are fine but I really wouldn’t mind Ashcroft in for Astley as Cunty could be pretty direct and physical and he hasn’t really let us down.

One of the problems he might have is he’s a scouser and a dyed in the wool red, with the family history on top. If he does go on to the level we all expect it might be difficult for him to leave Anfield, consequently his success becomes intrinsically linked to that of the club.

Davo just edges it for me but young Owen not too far behind. The closest I have seen at Dens to Beck was Tosh McKinlay - he should have played at a higher level than Celtic but attacking wing backs were not such an important part of the game in those days.

For any young player, aiming to excel at either wing back slot seems a good plan. These guys have become so important in the current game.

It’s actually amazed me to see how simple it is to get it mostly right. The other thing Wright did, from my perspective, is use the windows to sign players who are better than the incumbents.
