  1. I thought it was quite a strange atmosphere yesterday, there wasn't much build up pre-match and both teams ran out at the same time to some generic music (the Scotland team running out to Highland Cathedral is usually a highlight for me). There seemed to be a lot of people talking when kicks were being taken too. All Blacks game is looking close to a sell out so hopefully there will be a better atmosphere next week.

Very good Scottish performance but we should have won by more than 10 points. Agree that Barnes was rancid, a penalty try after one scrum infringement? I've not watched the game back yet but Harley's yellow was in front of me and it looked more like the Argie lifters didn't support the jumper. The decision to run that last minute penalty was stupid too. Ford and Laidlaw had their best games for ages, and the new players didn't look out of place.

  2. There was a few positions I'd say were 50/50 calls (1, 2, 6, 9 and 10) but I think the rest of the team pretty much picks itself, Ashe is the only surprise inclusion for me, but seemingly Beattie has missed the last few games for Castres.

  3. Who are Scotland due to play in the Autumn internationals? I see that Australia are playing England, Wales, France and Ireland.

Argentina, New Zealand and Tonga. The Wallabies also have a game against the Barbarians next weekend, Al Kellock has been called up for the Baa-Baas.

  4. I'd probably go with Pyrgos and Weir too, I was very critical of the latter last year but he's started this season in good form, as has Pyrgos. If those two get the nod you're probably looking at an all Glasgow back line, with Seymour and Maitland on wings, Dunbar and Horne/Bennett in the centre and Hogg at full back, with Lamont covering from the bench.

Only Edinburgh players I can see getting in the team would be Dickinson and Ford, and they'd be a 50/50 toss up over Reid and Lawson. Murray at tighthead then Hamilton and both Grays in the matchday squad, and the Killer B's in the back row.

I've also noticed that Scotland U20 cap Scott Steele has been London Irish's first choice scrum half this season.

  5. Strauss and Dunbar will be big misses for Glasgow today, hope the latter is fit in time for the Autumn Internationals. Squad is announced on Monday, I'm predicting:

Reid, Dickinson, Allan, Murray, Cross, M Low

    Lawson, Ford, MacArthur

Hamilton, R Gray, J Gray, Swinson, Gilchrist

Brown, Strokosch, Harley, Barclay, Cowan, Watson, Beattie, K Low

    Cusiter, Laidlaw, Pyrgos

    Weir, Russell, Heathcote

    Horne, Dunbar, Bennett, Taylor, Evans

    Lamont, Maitland, Seymour, Fife, Visser

    Hogg, Murchie

Grant, Welsh and Wilson are returning from injury at their club sides this weekend so it's probably too soon for them, Jackson, Denton and Scott still out. We should really be beating Argentina and Tonga but can't see us getting anything out of the All Blacks.

  6. I quite like the new red kit, though I make that 4 new change kits in the past 4 years, and I imagine we'll have another new set of kits out in less than a year for the World Cup. The three kits Macron have produced look good though, especially compared to the Canterbury efforts.

Did anyone watch the Gold Coast 7s today? Scotland were 21-7 up on Portugal with 3 seconds to play and ended up drawing 21-21.

Ulster vs Glasgow should be a cracker tonight.

  7. Hope there's not too many Saturday afternoon games with this new tv deal. Couldn't have worked better for me last year, I was able to get to every home Clyde, Glasgow and Scotland game. Our playoff final at Methil even kicked off an hour earlier which enabled me to get to Scotstoun for the Zebre game.

I noticed there is pretty much a rugby version of Football Manager coming out http://www.incgamers.com/2014/07/pro-rugby-manager-2015-being-released-by-505-later-this-year

I've been wanting a game like this for ages, but it seems to be just the Pro12, English and French leagues that you'll be able to play.

  8. Tommy Seymour was awesome tonight - he must start ahead of Visser.

Indeed, he's developing into a very good player at international level. Hart and Pyrgos made a big difference at scrum half, other than decent goalkicking Laidlaw offers nothing.

We ran South Africa very close last year with a far from first choice squad, and were on the receiving end of a couple of dodgy refereeing decisions, so hopefully we can perform to the same level again. The back row will be a major worry though, only Harley and Fusaro will be available to play. The only other players I can think of to bring in are Tyrone Holmes, James Eddie and Roddy Grant, and the latter two will be in training for the Commonwealth Games I imagine.

  9. I'd recommend Trek America too, I'm just back from a Coast to Coast express trip and it was probably the best fortnight of my life. I went on my own but the group was great and we all got on well. Already thinking of doing the Atlantic Dream next year.

  10. I think Townsend has his team spot on for tomorrow night. Whilst he may not have the same moments of spark as Hogg, I think Murchie is a more solid full back and has been in better form. Kellock is in to get on the side of the ref as much as anything. Only a few hundred tickets left. Should be a cracker. Glasgow have a strong bench too, fingers crossed we get the job done.

  11. Glasgow seemed to take the foot off the gas big style towards the end of that one. Though I'm not sure Fusaro's try was chalked off and how Edinburgh's 3rd stood, and it looked like a forward pass for the 4th. Jackson had a great game and was my MOM, certainly miss him and Cusiter next season. Bennett has been in fine form recently, deserves his chance in the summer tour. Scott was excellent for Edinburgh and Gilchrist put in a good shift. Don't think Kellock has much longer at this level though...

Definitely in Glasgow's hands now. Need to beat Treviso away and Zebre home, and get a try bonus in one of them to guarantee a home semi. To be honest, if we can't achieve that then we probably don't deserve it.

  12. Here's a question though, the final is held at the stadium of whoever finished highest in the league of the two finalist is that correct? Maybe needs reviewed in future.

The highest team has the choice of stadium but I think it needs to hold 18000+, so I'm not sure where the Warriors would play if they host it.
  13. Dunbar, Horne and Lamont are all injured so Russell is the best available choice for 12.

Wasps have a 34 year old Andy Goode and another fly half I've never heard of, so I'd say Jackson has a good chance of becoming first choice there. I wonder if it was the SRU's decision rather than Townsend's to keep Weir over Jackson. Jacko seems to have been his preferred 10 since he took over and has been in better form, then Weir starts all 6N games and gets a new long term deal.

  14. I've got a season ticket for Scotstoun. Edinburgh are a complete mess with all these SH journeymen. They've started playing their best player in Matt Scott out of position to accommodate a 30 year old South African. Du Preez looks like a decent project signing, but none of the rest of them will be good enough to play for Scotland (can't believe some are tipping Nel to be our tighthead for the 2015 WC). They'd be better off giving youngsters like Turner, Allan and Watson game time, plus they're losing experiened Scottish pros in Cross, Rennie, Laidlaw and De Luca in the summer. Cue an Edinburgh win on Saturday...

  15. I've not heard about DTH but there seems to be rumours that Hogg is Ulster bound? Seems to have been mentioned in the Belfast telegraph and on forums. Really good depth at Glasgow now when we've not missed these 2 plus Lamont in recent weeks.

I still think Murray would be a good signing, no doubting that he's a quality player and his Sunday absences could be covered by Townsend's rotation policy, plus at 34 he won't be playing every game anyway. Had he been here this season, he would have only missed the first HC double header against Toulon and Exeter, as Connacht and Dragons were both on international weekends.

  16. Jackson is apparently on his way to Wasps. I like him and prefer him to Weir, but agree the rotation didn't work. I've noticed Heathcote isn't even getting on the bench for Bath nowadays, I wonder if he's on his way to Edinburgh? Would be a good move for him, I've liked him on the few occasions I've seen him. Also heard a rumour that Euan Murray will be on his way to Scotstoun, nicely filling the gap left by Moray Low.

  17. Cusiter still had another year on his contract to go, can't believe the decision makers have agreed to his release. He's probably one of the highest earners and has spent a lot of time injured, but by far and away Scotland's best scrum half.

Glasgow have been playing some good stuff recently, sound defensively and good going forward. In Finn Russell I think we have our long term #10 for Scotland. Good form has also coincided with the return of Sean Maitland, what a classy player he is.

I caught the Zebre vs Edinburgh game yesterday, what a joke they've become. I can't think of any Edinburgh player who'd get a game at Glasgow save for Matt Scott, and at that, Horne, Dunbar and Bennett are all good centres.

2nd place between Glasgow and Munster IMO, the Warriors should really be looking at bonus point victories over Edinburgh and Zebre at home, and a good chance against Treviso away. Munster will probably get a bonus point over Edinburgh and their final game is home to Ulster. Will be tight!

As for the summer tour, I'm hoping Reid, Russell, and Bennett all get game time, they've been standouts recently. I'd take Murchie ahead of Hogg too.

  18. Which came first at Shawfield...was it a greyhound track Clyde decided to move into or was it originally Clyde's football ground that they adapted to allowing racing as an income generator?

If it was always a greyhound track, where did Clyde play before and why move?

Clyde played at Barrowfield Park from their inception until 1898 before moving to Shawfield, which was a former horse trotting ground. The club were struggling financially in the 1920's and a greyhound racing company offered to lease the stadium and give Clyde a percentage of the gate receipts, but animal racing was forbidden in the deeds of Shawfield. They managed to get around it by setting up a new company (largely financed by Clyde's directors), who bought the stadium from Clyde, and this allowed them to implement greyhound racing, and Clyde were now tenants. The then owners decided to evict Clyde and they left in 1986. Clyde announced they were moving back to Shawfield in 1988, but the owners did a u-turn and decided that speedway would be a better option. The speedway track cut into the grass (see below), so it couldn't host both.

Another interesting fact is that Shawfield passed right through the Glasgow-Lanarkshire boundary (I think a third in Glasgow and two thirds Lanarkshire). Clyde finished 3rd in Scotland in 1966-67 and should have had a place in the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, but there was a "one club per city" rule. Rangers had finished 2nd, and the authorities deemed Clyde a Glasgow team due to their membership of the Glasgow FA. Clyde tried to argue that most of the ground was in Lanarkshire but were denied their place and 6th place Dundee took the European spot.

  19. One end of the ground was famous for the giant tote board.

Shawfield was also nearby to Roseberry Park, home of now defunct Shawfield Juniors (at the bottom of this pic). Roseberry hosted the Glasgow Schools cup finals after Shawfield Juniors went bust and there was talk about Clyde moving there after being evicted from Shawfield.

The terracing has fallen into a state of disrepair and doesn't have a health and safety certificate.

Shawfield was right across the road from Richmond Park, at the top of this photo. You can see the pond, which is home to a large number of swans. In a match against Hearts in the 60's, a swan flew over and landed behind the goals, then made it's way onto the park, and refused to move. The referee had to halt the game until it flew away.

I was born 5 years after we left Shawfield and I've never set foot inside the stadium. I've started doing quite a lot of research into the club in the past 18 months and I'm planning on going one night in the summer when the greyhounds are on.

  20. Shawfield of course is still standing and open every weekend for the greyhounds. The bottom picture was after a game against Celtic in 1957. The wall at the front of the terracing collapsed after 7 minutes injuring dozens and killing one boy. The game was stopped temporarily and the players carried the injured spectators across the pitch for treatment. Remarkably the game restarted and Celtic won 6-3.
