  1. Stalin : Court Of The Red Tsar by Simon Sebag Montefiore

A lot about the intrigue and paranoia of Stalin and his colleagues.

The purges , forced famine and the imagined treasons , wholesale deportations , whole families just basically swept away when anyone got too popular or on the wrong side of Stalin. He held the power of life and death over anyone or any group in the Soviet union and wasn't afraid to use it.

    Devoted sister, beloved c**t.

I just started watching the first series and this just absolutely broke me up.

  3. Haven't seen a thread about this anywhere.

A English ships pilot shipwrecks on the coast of Japan with the remains of his crew and gets taken prisoner by the local samurai chief , then finds himself mixed up in a oncoming civil war between 5 regents.

Some great characters and some faintly recognisable Japanese actors and brilliant swearing.

Never been a fan of NATO bands, convince me otherwise. I’m not sure what I’m missing here.

Comfort and fit , colour matching or just generally updating or completely changing the look and wear of a watch.

Put a Bond NATO on a Seiko solar diver instead of the original, which has polished mid links and looks miles better imho

You left handed Dave?  The whole thing messes with my brain too much, excellent from Pagani yet again though.

No , mate , that's why it's a bit strange , the winding is upside down and I don't know how many times I've put it on the wrong way round already 🫣

I'm currently working my way through Auschwitz by Laurence Rees.

A very well researched and readable nonfiction book about the Nazi concentration camp.

As expected its a grim read and it's left me feeling despondent that ordinary people could be so fucking evil.

He does a few books about the subject , some attached to the BBC series he's involved in , all very good reads and very well researched.

At the moment I'm reading Crazy Horse And Custer : The Parallel Lives Of Two American Warriors by Stephen Ambrose of Band Of Brothers fame.

Basically a biography of both which leads to their eventual meeting at Little Bighorn.

It's like reading a Ken Burns documentary , great book.

Band of Brothers is also based on a book. I read it many years ago, and is really interesting to compare to the show.

Sobel (David Schwimmer) killed himself in the 50s,not mentioned in the show.

Just one book though , whereas the Pacific is based on at least two and Sledge's book isn't that great and two are autobiographical rather than biographical. So I think that the Pacific isn't as linear and the source material not as good.

Don't get me wrong it's okay , just not on a level with Band of Brothers.

I’ve not actually seen the Pacific yet so that would be ideal.

Just don't go into it thinking it's the same level of story ...or characters....or acting.

It's based on a couple of books , so , the narrative isn't as strong  , it's decent but just adjust your expectations if you're expecting another Band Of Brothers.

  9. Managed to get the Casio " Tiffany " .

Had requested the restock email and forgot about it till I got the alert on Friday , in a queueing system for about 5 mins then checked out.

Really nice dial  , bracelet not great but second hand hitting every marker , same as my other Casio quartz watches.

    Episode 6 - just great.

I'm still not 100% on board with the casting of young Kirk, but he is turning into a good character.

Very much Uhura based this week.

They aren't really pushing too much of Kirk at the moment ,  they seem to be drip feeding him into it , which is a good idea.

Think this has had the best start to any of the later treks , would like to see a bit more Pike episodes soon though , he was easily the best thing about Discovery.

  11. Enjoyed the latest episode , liked the wink about Toronto looking like New York. Also got a thing for La'an or maybe just angry , violent women in general , but , I thought the story was decent and the chemistry between Kirk and La'an was good.
