I do think sometimes it's easy to forget just how small and inconsequential, in a strictly standalone financial sense, football clubs are*. Simon Kuper's book on Barcelona is a great read for understanding the dysfunction and sheer financial incompetence that can afflict even the biggest clubs, because they end up being run/owned not by competent businesspeople but by their wealthiest fans. Undoubtedly they go in mostly with good intentions, but there's always an element of them loving being the biggest fish in a small pond. So work that down to an infinitesimally smaller club like ours, then you're going to have a similar thing but with arguably even less knowledge about how to run a business. The boardrooms of clubs our size will always heavily feature sort of person that has an overexaggerated sense of their own genius and importance because, for example, they've built a questionable local plumbing empire. The best thing we can hope for is that they're not crooks and are able to bring at least a semblance of competence to the organisation. Would it surprise me if the current board and some of the wealthier patrons are total arseholes? I'd be more surprised if they weren't. But given what we've experienced as a club over the past decade, I think it's safe to say that they're still a significant upgrade on the last lot. TL;DR - pretty meh about current board, could be a lot worse. * Obviously, there's a whole ecosystems of media that feeds off it.

It didn't even require much in the way of sleuthing. I remember when this was announced last year, it took me less than an hour's worth of internet searching to find a whole swathe of red flags. The negligence of the board was astounding.

It used to be the SNP's line that they wanted polls to show 60% support for independence over a sustained period before having another referendum (Herald link). Even as someone that thinks independence would be an unmitigated shitshow akin to Brexit on steroids, I always felt that was a fair position. If the people of Scotland consistently say that this is what they want, then I don't think it would be fair to disallow another vote. It's safe to say we're nowhere near that point at present. Despite a historically unpopular Tory government led by someone that most Scots understandably find comparable to Satan, opinion polls continue to show a majority of people would opt for the status quo. Of the 23 opinion polls taken in the last 12 months, 3 have shown a lead for independence while 18 have shown a lead for the union. Indeed, 2 of those 3 'yes' polls were taken by Ipsos Mori whose methodology for whatever reason seems to tilt in that direction (yes, there will be others that tilt the other way) - but even they showed a narrow lead for the no side in their most recent poll. Neither does there appear to be any sizable appetite among the broader population for a referendum over the next 12 months. Each of the 7 polls that have asked this question since 2021 have shown that only around 17-25% of Scots actually want another vote in that timescale. This might not reflect the echo chamber on this forum, but it does seem like a majority of Scots either don't want a referendum or are quite happy kicking the can down the road for a few more years at least. As for the 2024 general election somehow becoming a de facto independence vote.... no it isn't. The other parties don't have to play by the SNP's rules. I'll be voting for the candidate and party that I think will best govern the country. It's not a referendum just because Sturgeon says it is. This is the person that when asked who a voter that wanted her to remain as FM but didn't want a second referendum should vote for said 'vote for me'.... and then proceeded to take every single vote she received as a 'mandate' for said referendum.

What do you mean by that? How is Westminster totally unaccountable? There are regular elections, select committee hearings, oversight by a second (albeit unelected) chamber etc. So I would argue, that there is at least some level of accountability - albeit like most political systems it is massively dysfunctional and unresponsive in other ways. Where I'm really at a loss, though, is why things would be any different in an independent Scotland. If anything, the experience of recent years shows that the Scottish government take pride in being just as dysfunctional and unresponsive as there counterparts at Westminster. Just look at how long it took the FT to get the information about the taxpayer-backed guarantee the SNP gave Sanjeev Gupta in 2016.

Nobody is arguing that it's not up to them if they have a night out. But I fucking hope the training sessions are brutal this week. While I still think it's not that likely, there are a few reasons to think that the Falkirk job might be the right one for Jack Ross. 1) He's been punted from his last 2 jobs at Sunderland and Hibs. Whether he likes it or not, that probably means at best he's going to be looking at lower end League 1 in England or lower end SPL in Scotland. That's at best. I really can't see any Championship team in England as a realistic next stop for him after 2 'failures' in a row. 2) It's always best to take over a club when they're at their lowest point. Never underestimate the power of mean reversion in life. Falkirk are absolutely on their honkers at the moment. In all likelihood, we're really not going to get that much lower than we are now. Christ, even with this mob on the pitch we're still mid-table somehow. Any semi-competent manager worth his salt should be able to take this club back into the Championship. A fully competent one should be able to have the club challenging for promotion to the SPL within a few years. 3) If point 2 works out as planned, then Jack Ross' career is back on track. And he's cemented his place as a home-town hero. All this is conditional on our new board having things sorted out the off-pitch nonsense and being able to convince any potential candidate that truly is the case. But bizarre as it sounds (and believe me, what I'm about to write sounds just as mental to me) the Falkirk job really should be seen as one of the most attractive in Scottish football. You've got a club with all the infrastructure in-place and an insanely loyal fanbase - all you need to do to be a hero is not be a total diddy. The upside is tremendous. This is most definitely not the case of trying to follow Sir Alex at Man Utd! Oh and make sure Gary Holt being punted is a condition of your joining. *edit - had us punting an ex-Norwich player
