  1. I hope someone emails her to change it.

    Can't you?

Can't remember that tbh. What I can say is though you were a breath of fresh air compared to the borefests most tutorials are, no wonder not many people go. Yawn.

Why thank you, its always nice to get a good review! I try to find a nice middle ground between entertaining, educational, and terrifying. I just hope to god they never formally surprise audit my classes...

  2. Yeah, I've seen you xbl. Well thought it was you anyway, wasn't sure enough to say anything. :P

I didn't make the connection till I noticed your avatar recently! I'm sure I stood in front of your class and forgot your name for about 9 successive weeks...and for that, I'm very sorry.

  3. How much did you get fined for that?!

If I recall, we had to split the cost of the window 50/50 (the throwee refused to go out to the ambulance until we'd shaken hands on a 50/50 split), so that was I think £90+, plus I think it was a £40 fine or something.

Sure this came up before, it wasn't even a good movie as I recall. I'd excuse smothering someone to death for talking through blade runner but I think it was Free Willy 3 or something!

I can't actually recall the film!

Eta, yes I do! It was US Marshalls!

  4. I'm staying in Polwarth, similar situation. Got 3 other folk in my flat and I'm not sure if they actually leave their rooms more than once a day. :thumbsdown

Have they given you mattresses yet? When I stayed in Polwarth back in 2004, the beds had sponge pads rather than mattresses.

  5. Thing is, during that time other games have come out and taken the crown from what would have been a natural coronation. There are countless games out there delivering almost exactly what you would expect from a modern Elite and I honestly don't think that simply having a good name to trade on (no pun intended) will be enough to separate this from the herd.

I've honestly never seen one thats grabbed me the same way. I've tried a few, but none of them has had what I've been after. I've still got an on/off game of FFE running after all this time.

  6. Because it has been discussed quite a bit before, if you can be bothered to do a search you should find a few threads - certainly one started by me.

Regarding E:D in itself, there have been so many false dawns with Elite that anyone following the project will generally consider it vapourware until something playable actually arrives (even if it's alpha). We've be living off a diet of the occasional sneaked preview images for years now.

Sorry! When it was in the news first time out, I was a bit distracted. Certainly, we've discussed Elite a few times, but this time, it seems for real. Development diaries, previews, videos and updates from Braben, fiction stories to be part of the world. And £1.8 million raised. Although the kickstarter deadline is passed, it seems you can chip in a few quid still...

  7. Apart from Medicine, Law etc, Glasgow and Edinburgh don't want anywhere near 5 A's for run of the mill course like Buisness, Geography, History and the like.

Not being able to get Highers in 5th year suggests a lack of intelligence, commitment, maturity or a combination of the 3. In my (anecdotal) experience, those who do not get the grades they require in 5tn year (or have a conditional where they only need 1 more in 6th year) rarely do well at uni.

I have to say, I'm not sure I agree with all of that. I got average to mediocre grades in fifth year (mostly highers, but mostly Cs), mostly due to a lack of maturity and commitment as you say. I got much better grades in sixth year, but my grades at uni were hugely better than any I got at school. In my view, people mature at different times and are best suited to being taught in different ways.

Some people bloom when they get to uni, others do badly at school, but then go on to make a much better fist of things a few years down the line in college, and then go on to do well at uni. So while I agree with the first part, I don't really agree with the second part. Plus those that get top grades in school rarely seem to (in my anecdotal experience this time) do nearly as well at uni.

  8. I find that arrogance about qualifications is a bit unseemly. Being happy about them is very much acceptable, but don't turn into Hb with his "I got a degree in Law, I know more than anyone, degrees are so easy, I'm better than anyone" schtick. Its unpleasant!

  9. What about seminars? I've been told they're compulsory.

Go to the first few, and if the scheduling for tutorials/seminars is going to be a problem then go and see whoever is your tutor. Explain to them that its a one off (well, two off!), and that you have no choice. Apologise for the inconvenience, and assure them that you will catch up with the work. You'll find that your tutor is likely to me much more understanding face to face than through an anonymous email, and they will appreciate you telling them and not just sciving off without explanation.

  10. Yes! Peter Capaldi is excellent, and he knows how to play dark very well. Going back a few years, he played the angel islington in Neverwhere, a fallen angel with a lot of darkness to him. Fantastic!!

  11. ONe is doing a PhD in law, the other in history. Both are lovers of gigantic tracts of prose, the verbosity and pedantic nature of a law PhD in particular will warm the cockles of Ad Lib's heart. They'll be fine. It's just us poor engineers trying to innovate the future with two lengths of sticky tape and a multi channel oscilloscope (with only one working channel) who feel hard done by in the PhD stakes. :P

I at least got to the end of mine without giving it all up and running away to work with wolves. Over the piece, it was worth the misery. I'm sure they'll be fine, but I wonder if they have any idea what is in store for them. :D
