  1. I was at the game as well and it was a fair description. Would disagree with the league being dire. Last season when the cup resumed there were 7 Highland League teams and no Lowland League teams. In fact no other non league teams. Brora then beat Hearts. I would suggest the East of Scotland Premier is stronger than the league Shire play in at the moment. Nobody would deny the Lowland League will become very strong in years to come but it is brilliant there is at least some semblance of a Pyramid.
  2. I was very impressed with Jeanfield Swifts at Inverurie today. Locos, admittedly missing a few key players were totally outclassed.
  3. Just checked. They are fourth in the league and have only lost one out of nine. You have not convinced me!
  4. Hawick were bottom of the league as well so I did not get them being favourites to beat Golspie. A depleted Banks O’Dee beating Linlithgow Rose away I thought was some result.
  5. Scottish Cup starting tomorrow so below is the updated table of non league teams in the Scottish Cup since the revamp in 2007. Talbot still well clear despite last seasons absence. Linlithgow and Buckie closing a little. Formartine now out on their own with the most league scalps (5). 6. I was at the game last night and was impressed with Brechin. Buckie shaded it I thought but 3-1 flattered them. The last time I was there was two years ago when Elgin beat them. That day I was astonished that they had three fat players in the team. The goalie looks a bit of a problem on last night’s showing but I think you have signed a gem in Wade. Great addition to the league.
  7. Cove gained nothing when Hearts put on a ringer as sub. I wonder what they will claim is the difference in this case?
  8. Drew away at Albion Rovers. All relative.
  9. Brora were not far behind Cove in their final Highland League season. Cove have for most of this season 7 or 8 players who played in the Highland League in their starting lineup. A couple of long term injuries to Milne and Masson have cut that number recently. Going on how well Cove have done in the league should give Brora confidence. Kelty are a strong side in what should be a stronger league although Scottish Cup results this season would tend to refute that. Brechin have shown glimpses of form in recent weeks but can they head off either side. I doubt it although “honest mistakes” from the officials may play a part. I doubt it though over two legs. Brora just for me but Kelty will be tough.
  10. It is a good question. When the highlight of the first lockdown was Saturday Sportsound you could tell that the Elgin Chairman Graham Tatters was not keen on Brora getting in. I think it is misplaced. There is an obvious fear of relegation at the moment largely because under the current set up it would be so hard to get back. Make promotion and relegation automatic and that fear would be mitigated. Still a fear but possible to regroup and get back. You would like to think Cove and Edinburgh City would welcome it.
  11. Has a referee been appointed yet for Saturday’s game?
  12. A difference with the other play offs being cancelled is that teams like Falkirk and Edinburgh City had the opportunity to win promotion via their own league. Brora and Kelty, as part of the same pyramid, were denied this. Surely that can’t be allowed to happen again even if seasons have to be extended.
  13. With Cumbernauld Colts losing to Huntly last night it means that all 14 Lowland league teams who entered the cup at the 2nd preliminary round stage have been knocked out. Only Kelty and Bonnyrigg, who entered a round later survive from the league. Any theories as to why? Luck of the draw? It was thought by many that the Highland clubs would be at a disadvantage having only started their season in late November. That doesn’t seem to have mattered. Maybe the fact that the Lowland sides had been playing twice a week regularly for the first time has taken it’s toll?
  14. Good quick skim. I had not realised that a league club had been defeated every year since the revamp. Only other one I found was Buckie advancing in 2010/2011 after Shire played a ringer and got kicked out. I would count that albeit with an asterisk.
  15. Start of the Scottish Cup crept up on me. Updated table at the end of last season. Talbot miles ahead now. 16. Cove's last game was a 7-1 away win at Stirling Albion. The starting line up contained 8 players that played in the Highland League and another one came on as sub and scored. They have signed a couple of high profile Aberdonians and a few youngsters on loan who have been mainly on the bench. They have improved but it is mainly the Highland League side. On the subject of the standard of the leagues I agree the Lowland League is bound to improve in the coming years. Their previous two champions East Kilbride and Spartans were poor compared to Cove. You would have fancied Brora to beat them as well. This will undoubtedly change in time. The Kelty Brora clash would have been a cracker.
  17. What might be proposed is that Kelty and Brora go up but two down and third bottom in a play off with the Highland/Lowland winner next season. That means the numbers go back down to 42 for the next season. Think the league one and league two clubs might worry about that given how easily Cove won the league two title with a team containing the vast majority of their Highland League team. Brora were not far behind Cove in their final Highland season so there is a fair chance they would hold their own if promoted. You would fancy certainly Kelty to avoid the bottom three as well. This outcome would mean three established league clubs in the bottom three. You could see how they would be worried. One bad season and it is a long way back.
  18. Nipper Thomson was an Aberdeen lad who was released by Shrewsbury
  19. I took in the Elgin game last week and the weight thing was the first thing that struck me. At least three players looked overweight which is something you do not see at Highland League level. Perhaps the odd one but not three in the same team. To be fair they looked decent players when they had the ball at their feet but it is not a five a side league.
  20. Think he was from Baillieston unfortunately...
  21. Many years ago places like Balfron, Bonkle and Newport on Tay were associated with the home towns of referees in Scotland. I am sure many on here would get the referees associated with these places in a quiz. There were a few anomalies in that a Glasgow ref was never Glasgow. It would be Clarkston, Newlands or even Queens Park. An Aberdeeen or Edinburgh ref would be Aberdeen or Edinburgh. There was a referee called Sandy Roy who lived in Westhill but he was always Sandy Roy, Aberdeen. Now you have no idea where the referees are from. All the old ones have retired and we never hear where the new ones are from. Is there a Grade 1 Aberdeen or Inverness referee on the list these days for example? Alan Freeland was the last ref Aberdeen I recall the last Inverness top flight ref I remember was Ward Balfour but that was fifty years ago. I don't think they stopped saying where refs are from in England I wonder why they did it here?
  22. Fort William crowd was 675 according to the Depressing Journal.
  23. I notice Coupar Angus missing from the Scottish Cup results for the first two rounds. Did they not enter? Looks like the best set of results the North Region teams in general have achieved for years. Incredible result by Bridge of Don Thistle. A draw away to Kilwinning and winning the replay. I cannot think of a better one since Banks O'Dee and Sunnybank won the cup in the fifties. I am sure there must have been right enough.
