  1. Compared to many our football media has been meek and compliant for ages, but they're all for anyway: it extends play - then VAR chat fills airtime, generates clicks and produces controversy, for minimal effort.

Force somebody to take glimepiride, douse them in caustic fluid, leave them dead for days, they end-up a vegetable... sentences 7 years 9 months... 18 months suspended... 6 months suspended. WTAF? Huddersfield: Family members jailed after abusing son's wife - BBC News Huddersfield: a man and his parents have been jailed after a court heard his wife was forced to take medication and doused with a corrosive substance. Ambreen Fatima Sheikh suffered life-limiting injuries due to their abuse. The court heard Ms Sheikh was "tricked or forced" into taking the anti-diabetes drug glimepiride, which induced catastrophic brain injury, in 2015 after she was brought to the UK from Pakistan following a 2014 arranged marriage. She was also doused in a caustic substance, thought to be a cleaning fluid, at the family's home in Clara Steet, Huddersfield, in the days prior to her hospital admission in August 2015. There was a two to three-day delay between Ms Sheikh falling unconscious and the family calling an ambulance. It was initially thought she would die but she began to breathe for herself when her ventilator was turned off in hospital. Prosecutors said she only survives by being fed through a tube and will eventually die as a consequence of what happened to her. Now 39, her injuries have left her in a persistent vegetative state from which she will never recover, the court heard. "It is difficult to imagine a more serious injury short of death," Mrs Justice Lambert remarked. Ms Sheikh was said to be in good health before her collapse and there is evidence she was a teacher in Pakistan. One witness said she was "intelligent, bright, ambitious and happy-go-lucky" before she moved to the UK. The trial heard that soon after Ms Sheikh arrived in the UK the family became unhappy with her housework and chores. None of the family gave evidence in court and the judge said she could not say for sure when the abuse began. Asgar Sheikh, 31, was jailed for seven years and nine months at Leeds Crown Court along with his father, Khalid, 55, and mother, Shabnam, 52. Asgar, Shabnam and Shagufa were also found guilty of doing an act intending to pervert the course of justice. Asgar, Khalid, Shabnam, Shagufa and Asgar's brother Sakalayne Sheikh were found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Sakalayne, 25, was given a six-month sentence, suspended for two years, and his sister, Shagufa, 29, was given an 18-month sentence, also suspended for two years.

  6. Aberdeenshire Cup Final was - maybe still is? - down for April 20th (it was you who posted it on FN btw!). So unless Buckie were potentially going to play 2 games at same time or there not be a simultaneous finish, it presumably was April 13th on paper.

Casement Park: 'Considerable amount' still needed for project says Gordon Lyons - BBC News Redevelopment of Casement Park could require £200m to complete work by 2027 The Stormont minister in charge of the redevelopment of Casement Park stadium in west Belfast has said a "considerable" amount of money still needs to be found for the project to go ahead. Communities Minister Gordon Lyons said funding remained a "big difficulty". The stadium must be completed by the summer of 2027, at the latest. This is in order to host games in the Euro 2028 soccer tournament. Although it will be primarily for GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) games, the 34,500-capacity stadium is one of 10 venues in the UK and Ireland due to host matches in the Euros. The original cost of the Casement Park redevelopment was £77.5m, but that was a decade ago. In an interview with BBC News NI, it was put to the minister that the cost could now exceed £200m. He said: "The number isn't finalised but even if it was … for commercial reasons I can't go into the details of what that might be. The GAA has said it is willing to pay at least £15m, with other funding coming from Stormont, plus the British and Irish governments. Mr Lyons said he did not yet have clarity on how much the London and Dublin governments are willing to contribute but said the amounts would be "key". Asked if he was confident that Casement Park could be rebuilt in time for Euro 2028, Mr Lyons said that is "entirely dependent upon the funding envelope being made available".

    I wondered if floodlights were a factor but no. Hampden's were installed long after many other grounds but being opened Oct 1961 and used in Home Championship in Nov 1961 precede Euro 64 'snubbing' decision.

    Remember the Home Championship doubled as WC 1950 and 1954 qualification; plus we played 3 of our 4 qualifiers for 1958 and 1962 in quick succession during May of 1957 and 1961. It's pretty clear to me SFA and its clubs felt the only internationals during the season should be the Home Championship, the Army and Scottish League challenges, plus high profile home friendlies (themselves pretty rare).     Finland were only others not to enter*; as late as 1971 we played Euros qualifier at Pittodrie as it wasn't seen as 'proper' tournament. Scotland was only FA to vote against womens football in 1972. *Cyprus joined UEFA after qualifiers began; and for complex reasons West Germany didn't enter due to issues over East Germany participating after Berlin Wall went up a few months prior.
  13. As simple an adjustment as Premiership and SPFL1 starting 1 round earlier (R3 and R2 respectively) could mean more varied cup, no prelims, and space for 128 non league clubs in R1 (up from 60).
  14. It's rare for any cup outside SPFL to not be "all in". Incidentally for about a decade SJFA Cup has exempted SFA member clubs & Scottish Cup qualifiers past R1, so it's not entirely all-in from off. (This season they were actually to be exempted past 2 rounds until a few withdrawals reduced the entry meaning there didn't need to be 2 rounds before Last 64).
  15. Portugal won Euro 2016 from 3rd in group. Argentina reaching Final of WC in 1990; Italy in 1994; Mexico of Copa America in 1993, Uruguay in 1999, Paraguay in 2011, and Peru in 2019; plus Jordan of Asian Cup this year; are only other examples of making showpiece.
  16. I noticed them mention during commentary last night the next edition in Morocco - which ludicrously is as soon as next year - will be June & July... This clashes with FIFA's new Club World Cup, so I'm sure that will be popular among European clubs with African players, and indeed also the African clubs which qualify... Al Ahly and Wydad have already done, so and had 10 and 1 players respectively in Ivory Coast i.e. you'd be depriving Al Ahly of most of their starting XI!
