  1. Much of Arbroath’s success seems to have come from astute loan signings that have really, really worked out (from Livvi especially). Have all the loan options for the season been exercised yet or are there spots to fill?

DC’s strengths lay in being well backed to operate in the lower levels where players wage expectations are reflective of the stature of the club they come from (an are joining). As a strong Div 1 side Arbroath being well backed we’re able to entice the best pt players through their doors. As the club has improved their stature has gone up along with players wage expectations.
All of which makes DC’s job is a lot harder now than it was 2 seasons ago, Respected as he in the game I’d expect him to improve the team with any new loans he gets but the backbone of the side is aging and some are gone, replacing them will be tough financially for the reasons mentioned above.

Two seasons ago Arbroath we’re close to promotion, punching well above your weight, that season was fun but it may have done some damage in other ways.

  2. The not given one didn’t look conclusively enough of a goal to the majority of folks at the time, in tv replays it looks more likely but still not wholly conclusive (The infamous Dobbie free kick V QOS that was given looked less of a goal mind). I suspect the defender might not even be 100% certain one way or another, so the only way would be if there was goal line technology…….there isn’t so 3-2 stands.

in a similar fashion VAR would clear up the Vaughan penalty issue but there isn’t so 3-2 stands.

But there will be VAR next week at a Easter Rd, a similar incident may have a different outcome……or it may not.

Defending of crosses and set pieces needs some work, it must be said. Feeble challenges and/or poor marking prevalent at both Morton goals.

Never a penalty for our second goal, that's a clear dive. I'll conveniently ignore how poor that is from Vaughan given the direction this thread has taken, however. No doubt about the second penalty, although a poor effort from Mullin.

Great goal from Smith, even if Broadfoot sold the jerseys. He took it very well himself, but notice also the cynical takeout of the man in support during the replay.

Agree the defending was awful for their goals, there’s a small chance that Vaughans foot catches the back of the Morton players leg, be it a dive or accidental contact it’s still never a penalty.

The ref sees Stanton being fouled but waves play on, had we not scored I think there was another yellow card coming out.

really really strange that Raith fans seem rattled by us considering they won the game 🤣. Before having a go at the opposing team try looking at your own players first. Lewis Vaughan with the most blatant act of cheating I’ve seen in a while. Complete dive.

Missed all of the 1st half myself so cant comment, but I'm interested to know if it was it on a par with Quitongo's collapse in the box  late in the last game v us at yours?

  5. On the subject of the Railway stand, I had a season ticket for there until it it was closed, it has by far the best aspects for viewing.

As I recall the problems with the stand are multiple with the Kiosk, toilets and roof being the very least of the problems.  As stated the concrete works isn't suitable for safe standing and going from memory of previous AGM's unless I'm mistaken it's even  no longer in a fit enough (or safe)  condition to simply have the the seating replaced. As Zen earlier pointed out Network Rail are very strict about work within a certain distance of the track bed. Any removal of concrete works on what is effectively part of the track embankment probably would mean a closure of the East Coast line. Again as Zen stated the figures quoted for this were astronomical, I'm sure the figure quoted was £500,000/day .

There was (under Sim) some plan to eventually make safe standing or seating (new concrete steps) at the front of the stand and build some structures at the rear to house hospitality.

  6. On the subject of Ross Matthews, I still find it strange that he played a lengthy part in the Montrose friendly in late June, seemed to come through it ok then disappears with another (different?) injury.  Maybe I missed it but has the club said what is his latest issue?  Last I heard I'm sure Ian Murray said he was only a week or so behind Brown in the race for fitness.

  7. On the face of things another really good solid signing. If Shaun is principally a holding midfielder type then worryingly there's maybe more to Ross Matthews longer term fitness issues. If Shaun Byrne is another general CDM who's more disposed to attacking then given how many we have in that area I'm a wee bit less happy. Either way it's an Ian Murray signs another midfielder story and as said we now have a phenomenally strong bench to go to.....at least in some areas.

Our lack of a holding midfielder cover has the opportunity to hurt us but tbh it's the lack of cover for fullbacks that has me more concerned.

Loan players that were excellent for us. The boy Hardie from rangers, Johnny Russell, David Goodwillie.

Perhaps I should have quantified my post with "more recent" loan signings, a lot of the players mentioned in replies were of some vintage, many now in their latter footballing years and some actually retired.

In the last 5 years we've had over 15 players on loan, the best of them arguably was (IMO) Hendry, Gullan and Poplatnik it's fair to say the rest weren't too memorable with the exception of the likes of Timmy Abrahams who was memorable but for all the wrong reasons.

My main concern was/is that all too often we sign players and are obliged to play them even though they are not a massive improvement of what we already have.

Just for fun my all-time top loan Rovers XI:

K Wright (Rangers), J Thomson (Hearts), K Booth (Hibs),  O'Riordan (Crew), S Anderson (St Johnstone), J Holt (Hearts), J Russell (Dundee Utd), R Hendry (Celtic) R Hardy (Rangers) D Goodwilly (Dundee Utd), Smith (Hearts)

Too frightened to recall the worst but I can think of 3 Rangers players, a Dundee and a Fulham lads who pretty much flopped with us. Can't think of many outstandingly bad goalies on loan.

  9. Loan market seems to generate a lot of interest for some but generally it leaves me cold. Other than Regan Hendry and Connor ORiordan we haven't had too many stand-out class kids on loan, often as not I feel we end up with a guy who is the same or no better than we already have on the books but we have to play him due to the loan agreement.

That said I do see us brining in one or two and wouldn't be surprised if they were impact players who feature off the bench as opposed to defenders.

    Once everyone is available:

In Hamilton and Gullan we have two (3 if you include Vaughan) guys who can lead the line and hold the ball up.

The No 10 or second striker role we have lots of options, Gullan, Vaughan, Stanton, Easton, Ross, Mitchell and possibly even Smith.

On the wing we have Connolly and Mullin with in reserve Ross, Smith, Easton, Arnott and McGill, in the holding roles we have Brown and Matthews with cover in the shape of Stanton, McGill and at a push perhaps Arnott.

Defensively in the middle we have Watson & Murray with Masson Correct and Dick if need be.

At right back we have McGill, Masson and (at a push) Matthews  if Millen is unavailable.

Left back is where I see us thinnest on the ground if Dick is unavailable or needed else where we're struggling, the problem is if we bring in another Ngwenya type we probably have to play them to avoid paying all of their wages.

I'd have liked to seen a change in formation last week for the last 10 or 20 with Murray coming on for Corr to make a back 3 with Dick. McGill pushed up into the midfield holding role, releasing Stants to bomb forward.

Lots of really good options in most positions but no real challenge at present for the fullbacks, it would be nice to see a promising youngster signed as a LB or RB.

For anyone to wanting to experience how bad the commentary on the stream was on Saturday:

Well there's showing a slight bias then there's that.

He bigs up Flemmings saves, never once mentions that it's because his team is under the cosh, slates the penalty for being soft (WTF was he watching?) and the kick for being poor.

Worst though is his calling for a foul in the build up to their 2nd but totally missing the trip on McGill which  resulted in 3 players going down and us getting opened up like a can of sardines.

Takes some doing but I'd say he's worse than the slavering fermer at Gayfield.

  11. Painting directly onto the SP wall on Pratt St would obviously be a no no, however if supports could be mounted and panels fitted it would look cool. Something like the Berlin wall East side gallery would be awesome.

    https://fromplacetoplace.travel/germany/berlin/east-side-gallery/

More likely the board would want to sell it as advertising space, a combination of both might be good, although keeping it clean with dirt from traffic might be an issue.

  12. 1400 tickets is fairly good going, even if as many as a third of them are freebies that still means almost 1000 have been paid for. The club will doubtless sell another hundred sales or so yet and will hopefully reap the benefit of those freebies in the coming years the same way Partick have seen an upsurge in recent years with the amount of young supporters since they did the same.

  13. Goals against us yesterday came originally from our losing it and not winning it back in midfield then secondly from Millen not getting tight or closing his man down.

Preseason friendlies are all about sussing things out, as long as lessons are learned results don't matter too much, having said that this is the Fife Cup and if bookings count results should too.

Somebody said yesterday the Fife Cup is the 2nd oldest cup competition in Scotland after the Scottish cup.

I’m not buying that, unless you have actual evidence of that occurring. The polis would make that request with the League directly, along with every other “conflict” they’d like mitigated.

What you buy is up to you chief, that's the way it's been for a long time.

I've sat in AGMs and been told exactly that.

  15. Looks like the Fixtures computer has had its usual mare for us (shafted again).

Every team gets a request for a home or away game on a certain date, Police Scotland tell Rovers to request an away game in April when the Links market is here. This blows our chances of a new year derby at home virtually every year.

At least the Yuletide fixtures are both at home. No jaunts to Ayr or Greenock on boxing day.

I think the polis love putting a spanner in the works, if it's not costing the club financially with fixture dates it's cancelling new years games on the strength of a weather forecast because they don't have the manpower.

    Big team found.
I know there’s no interest on EF’s thread here on P&B and your club in general but please add something of value.

    Exactly This ∆∆∆∆

Not a single soul has posted on the EFFC thread in over 24 hours yet the wee man has been on here 3 times within the same timespan.

Bless his wee cotton socks, I guess he was just feeling lonely (and a bit jealous).

  17. Clueless wee laddies singing about NMcC are just that.

On to the game, a preseason kick about to sharpen things up and try things out. Shooting practice for Mullin, Gullan and Easton (some in more need of it than others). A good showing from most if not all with special mentions to McNeil, Trialist A, Masson, Stanton and of course Mullin for his 2 superb goals.

Montrose should prove a sterner test.
