Another superlative weekend at End of the Road. Favourite sets: Deerhoof, Fat Dog, Bodega, Yeule, Mabe Fratti, They Hate Change, The Courettes, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul, Teke::Teke, Panic Shack.
  2. Thank you for feeling able, and being willing, to share that.

If that *wasn't* your gig of the year then you've got something pretty fucking spectacular coming up.
  4. I saw Wolf Alice at Oran Mor around, I think 2015? Shortly before their first album - but (like Wet Leg last year) there was already a bit of attention building up. I think the King Tut's gig will have been earlier than that. I don't have a lot of saw-them-when-they-were-unknown tales, but I did see Rhian of Wet Leg in her solo guise back in 2016, and Self Esteem in one of Slow Club's very early gigs back in (I think) 2006. Pleased to see her making a name for herself now as well.
  5. Seems kinda bizarre, as someone who mostly only likes music that is never going to be commercially successful, to see all these grammys and brits going to a band I saw at the Mash House less than a year ago. But well done Wet Leg, I'm chuffed for them.

so far: Feb - English Teacher; Mandy, Indiana May - Richard Dawson; Otoboke Beaver and as usual, Sept - End of the Road (this will be my tenth)
  7. 2022 has been terrific, after a couple of quieter years. Here's my top ten - in alphabetical rather than any other order. Black Midi - Hellfire Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul - Topical Dancer Dama Scout - Gen Wo Lai Hurray for the Riff Raff - Life on Earth Jockstrap - I Love You Jennifer B Otoboke Beaver - Super Champon Richard Dawson - The Ruby Cord Rosalia - Motomami Stella Donnelly - Flood Wet Leg - Wet Leg Doffs of the cap also to BCNR, Grace Cummings, Nilufer Yanya, Porridge Radio, yeule and probably a bunch of others I've forgotten, as well as others that deserved more than the one or two listens I gave them before moving on or forgetting about them.
  8. See they've got a KEXP session gone online this week. They're usually worth watching.

Not seen them but I've heard good things about them.
  10. As someone who wasn't much into the Arctic Monkeys in their first incarnation, I've found their last two albums much more interesting; this one doesn't seem as good as Tranquility Base though.
  11. I've listened twice and it's not really grabbed me yet. I like them, but maybe it lacks the standout tracks that have reeled me into previous albums.

My next three gigs are all Stella Donnelly.
  13. Nothing has changed. There's still been no accountability, no recognition of failings, and the people who treated us with such absolute contempt - not even so much with the initial decision but in the aftermath of it - are mostly still on the board. f**k them. Happy Christmas, everyone.

Yeah that's just a general rider to cover themselves for any restrictions that "might" be in place, even though there aren't. They can safely ditch it now, tbh, but meantime you can ignore.
  15. Jockstrap - believe the hype.
  16. Donnelly, Jacklin and Ezra Furman all out last Friday, helluva week. All worth listening to - Donnelly's the pick of them for me but then I'm a massive fanboy so I would think that. A good deal mellower and more understated than the first one, maybe her personality comes across less forcefully, but ultimately I think the songs are better. Jacklin's isn't quite as good as Crushing, for me, but that's not really a criticism, it says more about how good Crushing is. Furman is best appreciated live.

Highlight of Green Man last weekend - Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul, one of my favourite festival sets ever. Also good sets from, among others, Melin Melyn, Ezra Furman, Pictish Trail, English Teacher and ... *checks notes* ... Joe and the Shitboys. End of the Road next week. Looking forward especially to Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mandy Indiana and Grace Cummings, none of whom I've seen before.
  18. I thought that was less underwhelming than the BB finale, but once again I'd say the best episodes came earlier in the series. It was merely ... very very good, rather than blowing me away. I don't mean that as an underhanded criticism - there was lots to like about it, they didn't spoil anything, it was a good way to end it. Been outstanding, overall. If there was still a debate before this year as to which of the two series was better, this last season has settled it decisively, surely. I think another spin-off would be a bad idea, notwithstanding that I originally thought this one was a bad idea too.
  19. I've got it on subscription on amazon, and up to now they've been coming up at midnight on Monday night / Tuesday morning - which I think is actually before they're broadcast in the US. I doubt that's deliberate, probably just slipped under the radar. But I'll be having a look to see if it's there again tonight. (Otherwise no, I'll just wait until tomorrow.)
  20. Yeah, think all of that is right. I don't think it's what they'll do but I like the idea. I take dj's point that there'd no way he'd get off so lightly *if* they can pin everything on him. But he was arms-length to the worst stuff that was going on (and so many of the witnesses are dead) so maybe there'd not be enough evidence to get him on anything except some of the more minor charges.
  21. Yes exactly so - I'd also assumed at first that it was a bit further down the line, but they've put in some references in recent episodes (eg the sporting conversation with the security guard referring to specific dateable games; also the phone call with Francesca) making it clear this is still late 2010, only a matter of months after the later events of Breaking Bad.
  22. I'm not a forensics expert but I don't think the police would have much trouble distinguishing a newly-wrecked car from one that had been lying for six years.
  23. By this point in the timeline he's not had - and surely been known not to have been using - the Esteem for more than six years.
