Real Betis 3-0 HJK Helsinki, Europa League Att: 35,384 A pretty straightforward win for Real Betis who had already qualified for the knockout rounds. Betis scored a screamer early on but HJK looked competitive and performed impressively until the home side got their second late in the first half. The home side brought on a number of their big hitters in the second half and should have really scored more than three. The big disappointment of the day was missing out on seeing Joaquin, who was out injured. Probably the last opportunity to see him before he retires as he is now 41 - incredible to think he was 21 when Championship Manager 4 came out. The Estadio Benito Villamarin is a big concrete lump from the outside but a fantastic stadium from the inside. It is about a 45 minute walk from the Plaza de Espana through a pretty affluent area of Seville. There's not a whole lot of options for food and drink around the stadium so I ended up getting a hotdog from a van behind the Gol Sur which was decorated in Legion Espanola posters - Betis are definitely the stauncher of the two big clubs in Seville. My broken Spanish became a bit less expansive when I noticed the decor but they only asked for a couple of Euros and not Gibraltar. The atmosphere in the ground was a bit disappointing but not too surprising considering the game was meaningless. The ground erupted a few times when songs that were obviously fan favourites were started but otherwise the home support was pretty muted. HJK brought around 400 and they sang non-stop from kickoff. A little known Scottish referee called "Willie Collum" held the whistle for this one. He didn't have a bad game. Conor Hazard of Celtic was in goals for HJK and had a decent game despite the score. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up in January as the Finnish season is now finnished. Scottish Premiership clubs with goalkeeping struggles will surely be having a think about him.

At what point do we start accepting the obvious though. There was contact but it wasn't the contact that made him fall over. He planted his foot and just chucked himself forward. Football punditry has brainwashed people into thinking contact = foul because it's ex pros sticking up for their kind because they've done the same thing in the past. English football blindly accepting the De Bryune one was a penalty as well sums it up. Some say VAR will ruin football. You could argue this "entitled to go down" nonsense has been ruining it for a lot longer. You don't need to be murdered to gain a foul but there's got to be reasonable contact that has actually impeded you.

Here’s my tuppence worth…. Last season Gary started off well, we looked good, we were competing with Kelty until Christmas. We were good enough to remain in the top four throughout but inconsistent form meant we lost being in touching distance with Kelty. Come the playoffs our form was, barring the 5-1 against Annan, fairly non existent. Not going up through the playoffs was forgivable after a season of horrendous injuries to key players. What wasn’t was losing our captain rumoured to be due to a major disagreement between captain and manager. These things happen but are avoidable and should be when things aren’t working out and heading in the direction we could all see. OK, that was last season, Irvine has made some decent signings, permanent and loan, Nditi being a highlight for me, signing more injured and injury prone players are most certainly not. The latter could’ve worked out but it’s a gamble that hasn’t paid off for him already and for Malcs before him. In my opinion, even without the injury prone signings (which if they’d worked out would’ve been great) have a playing staff capable of a serious challenge at the title. Sadly we are not a team and haven’t been for about a year. I won’t go into naming certain players that I feel are probably the best in their position in this division as we know who they are. A collection of quality talent needs to be moulded into a team, motivated by a manager with character. Tactical awareness and the willingness to change things are required. Unfortunately Irvine seems to lack this, his selections are all so predictable and his tactics are too easily read by others. If he even took a couple of gambles now and again that would be something, and by gambles I don’t mean playing his best pal who no longer has the legs. I’ve had the pleasure of chatting to Gary a few times, I don’t doubt his desire, I know some will disagree, and I also consider him to be a genuinely nice guy. I reckon he’s a great coach but he’s not a manager, certainly not yet. We need a replacement as soon as possible, even a short term fix (what’s Sam Allardice up to?) to steady the ship. We’re fortunate that it’s a very tight division and we’re not that far points wise off a play off place. I joked about Big Sam but that kind of character to stop the rot and get us back on track is needed now, if it’s long term then fine or even get us in a safe position and an attractive proposition to a more forward thinking long term gaffer. A long drone on I know and not saying anything new but needed that off my chest before we do a Brechin or worse…..

First off, I've been lurking in this thread for years and it is very much one of the best places on the internet. Thanks to all that have provided great content over the years - particularly, as somebody who has been living abroad for quite a while now, those posting their experiences at the lower tier and non-league grounds back home. Provides me with something as close to sentimentality as I'm likely to get. Osasuna 2-0 Real Valladolid, La Liga Att: 19,249 Got into Pamplona about 45 minutes before the match and really struggled to get a taxi to the stadium which is a good hour walk from the station. Managed to get there with a couple of minutes to spare thanks to a driver without much concern for traffic lights. The stadium itself is a cracking new build. Had bought tickets in advance for the upper tier which came it at €45 each so not the cheapest. We were sat above the Osasuna ultras and there was a cracking atmosphere all game. Valladolid seemed to have sold out the away end - quite unusual for Spain - but you wouldn't have known they were there if it wasn't for the purple catching your eye constantly. There was the usual coating of nut shells in the stands and half-time sandwiches. A great experience all in. Osasuna are a good side this year - currently sitting 5th - and dominated the game. An early penalty followed by a quick second goal pretty much killed off the game in the first half. The home side should have won more convincingly but squandered plenty of chances. The stadium is about a half hour walk from the historic centre of Pamplona. It isn't the most spectacular town on the peninsula - although I'm sure the bull run is very impressive in its own way - but the little bars in the winding old streets away from the main square are as good a place to have a few Sunday evening drinks as anywhere. Most people were taking their drinks and standing on the street which made for a nice atmosphere. I managed to avoid all the Americans looking to walk in the footsteps of Hemingway too which was a great relief.

I budget £10 for entry when I watch a game at this level. If it's less that that I'll buy tickets for the half time draw to make up the £10. The cost is one of the reasons I don't go to SPFL games - £15 to watch utter dross on many occasions is a step too far for me.

Amazing news for Baccus. First thing he needs though is 'rested' as he'll be walking on eggshells through the next two matches and who could blame him? Potentially once in a lifetime stuff. We've got enough depth in midfield to allow for him to drop out for a couple of games. Imagine if the lad got hurt now!

Perhaps I could buy a ticket from the office at the stadium in Dundee? No, I’ll need to call the office and get a £24 ticket put in an envelope and posted to my house, or drive to Kirkcaldy to buy a ticket during the office open hours. Seriously though, why are Dundee making it as hard as this to buy a ticket? Why are none of the usual, widely used methods not being offered? What’s the issue?

I like Hammell but going to Tynecastle with a midfield 3 of Goss, Spittal and Slattery was… bold. Chuck in Penney who’s good going forward but isn’t a great defender and it wasn’t a surprise we were so open and shipped 3 goals- could and should have been a few more as well. Lamie and Sol get slaughtered but I have some sympathy with them. They might not be great but the lack of protection they get every week and the sheer amount of defending they’re bring asked to do is bound to lead to mistakes. Take Lamie’s booking yesterday, he was dragged out to the touch line and was forced to take one for the team because Ginnelly had got in behind Penney for the 3rd or 4th time. Yes Sol gives away the pen for the winner but Cochrane walks through 3 or 4 Motherwell players without anyone putting a challenge in just like Tillman did a few weeks ago. Now it’s one thing adopting an open, attacking approach when you’ve got plenty of goals and quality in the final third. Quite another to do it when Connor Shields is part of your front three. On a positive note, Moult made a difference when he came off the bench and showed IF(a very big if) we can keep him reasonably fit he could contribute. Van Veen and McKinstry both improved as well with his introduction and there were positive signs of some nice link up play between them. But aye, while not going full Alexander at some point Hammell is going to have to recognise he doesn’t have the players to play the way he wants to and needs be a bit more pragmatic with his approach- at least in the short term.
