  1. Taking it to the corner to waste time in a friendly is just one level above diving to win a penalty for a draw in a friendly in the minter table.

  9. My brother in law is fairly senior in the Kantonal Sozialarbeit lot local to me. They secured 20 flats earlier this week for 34 kids, a few of their parents, and a few other adults who landed here. We didn’t bother asking about safeguarding, we just rattled through the house to find clothes, toiletries, books and toys that we could give them to make sure they had a few things there to help settle them. I feel like a right c**t now for not asking more questions about safeguarding.

  11. This is an extract of the info I passed to TJF because I became aware that at least one of their number was propagating the erroneous narrative that covid has been disastrous for Scottish football. I thought it was right they had this information and dealt with it but happy to share now given the reply received from them on the matter. Instinctively in late 2020, I believed every club should have improved financial results for a variety of reasons, namely : . Grants received from varying sources . Furlough . Pay per view . Retaining season ticket monies without all of the costs of putting on the games . Non refunding of season ticket monies . Fans fundraising initiatives - none better than our own Caroline’s fabulous efforts There are other much more nuanced points around this which I am sure are too subtle for this discussion but I am happy to explain. I have to say this was not merely my instinctive view, I know a number of people associated with Scottish football and their finances who had also arrived at this conclusion. I have analysed the available filed accounts of each club in the bottom three divisions of the SPFL. I have excluded the Premier League primarily because they received loans instead of grants, and so are not comparable to Partick Thistle, nor the other teams in the bottom three divisions Here are some highlights from the analysis I have done.- In the first year of Covid, PTFC made an operating loss of £130k. This assumes no support from 3BC, so in reality that is the best case underlying result of PTFC for that accounting year. In that same year, of the other non-Premier League teams, 19 made profits, 9 made losses. Some of the losses were reduced losses, ie better than the result for the year before, or the loss was a small quantum. Only 3 teams in those divisions had a higher operating loss than PTFC (Queens Park, Inverness CT, and Morton). I also analysed cash – 24 teams increased their cash reserves in 2020, whilst 4 saw their cash reserves deteriorate. Only Dunfermline had a larger decrease in cash than PTFC in 2020 from those divisions. We can move onto the second year of Covid – the one which aligns to the recent TBC accounts which stimulated the latest outbreak of this debate. Without support from TBC, PTFC would have a loss of £530k in 2021. (We did have their support though so that loss would never have occurred but it speaks to our culture and our future sustainability). Of the 2021 accounts filed so far, 10 clubs show profits and a single one shows a loss of you adjust for tbc support – PTFC. Among the clubs making profits, 4 were in the same division as PTFC that season. Aside from our operating loss of £530k, the next poorest result from that division filed so far is Falkirk (PROFIT of £112k). Forfar, East Fife and Clyde have also filed results showing even larger profits for that year. Again, I think we should look at cash. Of the 11 clubs who have already filed their 2021 accounts from the bottom three divisions, 10 show an increase in cash over the two year period since Covid has been so beneficial to Scottish football finances beyond the Premier League. Only a solitary one shows a net decrease in cash reserves over the two years. The one which does is PTFC who show a decrease of £43k over the two year period. For full context, here is how everyone else got on : Club Increase or Decrease over two years Amount PTFC DECREASE (£43k) after at least £530k support from TBC Stirling INCREASE £192k Elgin City INCREASE £228k Forfar INCREASE £276k East Fife INCREASE £227k Alloa INCREASE £300k Clyde INCREASE £309k Falkirk INCREASE £583k Dunfermline INCREASE £812k QOS INCREASE £779k Raith INCREASE £352k Whilst cash is not profit, it can arise from various sources, I do think this is further evidence that Covid has not in fact affected spfl clubs adversely which is a narrative some have been keen to make re ptfc. I also think that it also shows other clubs are coming out of covid better positioned in cash terms for the future.

  12. it is not that they cannot afford it. it is that Three Black Cats will not permit it in any meaningful conventional independent nor professional way. it was the agreed position of tjf board that due diligence would be done in early consultation with fans/potential members when the topic came up, they were reassured that was the agreed position. Subsequently it became apparent JL was not in favour of this. it was agreed by the entire tjf board that I wrote to her explaining why proper due diligence should proceed to protect everyone. She wrote back and said no. She offered a “knowledge sharing” approach. (Whatever that is). At that point, tjf had a decision to make. We had told people who were now members due diligence would be done. it became apparent to me tjf board (with certain individuals pushing accepting it hard) were happy to either accept knowledge sharing proposal, or think that they could “kick the ball down the road” and request due diligence again at a later date. Both approaches seemed deeply flawed to me. I consulted my institute (I am a chartered accountant) and my personal values and conscience and concluded I could not stay involved so resigned from TJF. Since then, information has emerged in the public domain that TJF were blissfully unaware of, suggesting that the knowledge share approach has not been a great success in the intervening four and a half months.

  14. By the way, I thought we were very good tonight, this is a proper football team and we definitely have a shot at getting to this World Cup. Starting to build a deeper squad of guys who are more than good enough, with the added bonus that we tend to be really comfortable in possession and are starting to create a lot more chances.

  15. After the past 20 years of watching us it's great to have a team of young players full of self confidence backing themselves to play rather than the pragmatic approach of persevering with guys in their 30's playing an odds game.

  16. Yes. I can’t imagine a single Sons fan wants him here next season, even if he does miraculously keep us up. I think almost every Sons fan (bar yourself) would rather see us try anything to stay up because what we have right now is a fucking disaster. If the board try something and it doesn’t work then fair enough, at least they tried. It’s hardly going to cost the world to punt him, I’d be hoping we do it in 6 weeks time anyway. Trying to compare the Edinburgh City scenario (a team of players who are unhappy because their gaffer was sacked whilst having them in a reasonably successful position) to our situation is like comparing baws and arseholes. Two completely different scenarios and I’d be flabbergasted if any of our players refused to play because a fucking disaster of a manager got bagged with us staring relegation in the face. If anything I think it would have the complete opposite effect, hence why we all want to see it happen.

  19. F*ck that. Arbroath’s a good awayday, will probably never be as strong as this season if they don’t go up and their ground will likely get the Victoria Park treatment if they’re promoted- turning into a plastic shoebox through time, whilst Kilmarnock would likely be clear favourites next season. There are no positives for fans of clubs like ourselves in Arbroath going up. No harm to them, but being completely selfish, I’m quite happy for Killie to swan off into the sunset.

  22. VT has some interesting points and if there were no clear aggressor or Ukrainian and Russian forces were equivalent in power then they would be more credible in my opinion. However, field artillery is an area fire weapon. Be it gun or rocket, it is not designed to be accurate. It is designed to saturate, deny or f**k up an area. Not a discrete target. And if you use it in an area you know to contain civilians, it's you, either giving the orders, pulling the trigger or pressing the button that is the bad guy. Even if the Ukrainians were using their population as human shields and I don't believe they are, that doesn't give licence for the use of inherently indiscriminate weapons. Russia also has precision weapons in its arsenal and their limited use has been noted by a number of commentators. It may not matter a f**k to the Russians, it may not amount to anything, I doubt anyone will ever see the inside of a court room, but if we're sliding towards unstable times globally I think it should matter to "us" in the West what is and isn't a war crime. And what's happening to Ukrainian cities unequivocally definitely is.

  25. In a just world the Conservative party would rightly be viewed a fringe lunatic party and would be polling at around 1 or 2%. Voting for them would be seen as crazy and folk who did would be pariahs. They'd never be anywhere near power other than perhaps a local council position or two. In a just world the current Conservative MPs would be jeered everywhere they went and called out for their repeated lies and crimes. Many of them would be serving lengthy jail sentences. Sadly we don't live in that world, and instead they are cheered on by too many as they steal from us (£11.4 billion 'lost' over the last two years), actively make people's lives worse, enact policies that drive people to suicide, are openly racist and are getting worse on all aforementioned points.

  27. I'm glad Devi realises this is a huge problem. A problem that is hugely influenced by the mass shutdown of the global economy as part of the pandemic response. Supply chains utterly gubbed, capacity strangled = shortages and higher prices. And this is before we add Ukraine into the mix. Plenty of noise from the zero coviders and indeed the former zero coviders about this, but not a single acknowledgement that the policies they advocated and demanded have caused most of the damage so far. The chickens are home to roost and the charlatans are feigning blindness, pretending they can't see them. Skip from writing your smug, revisionist columns, Devi, and own your complete and utter failure. This doesn't excuse the government not doing enough about it; but the root cause of most of is this is because of governments implementing harsh lockdowns. The problem you have with the Devis of this world just take a single issue in isolation and then assume that the rest of it are the government's problem and they'll sort it out. A thoroughly naive and stupid viewpoint, frankly.

  29. say what you want about our millionaire Eton-educated betters, they have their finger on the pulse of your ordinary Joe and know what makes us tick: And millions of fuckwits in this country love the class system which is exemplified by the current Government, Parliament more generally and specifically by the House of Lords and the monarchy. Millions of working class people who vote Tory do so as they like to know their place and get to tell others their place who happen to be a few strungs closer to the bottom than them. Many who rally against the class system, drop their principles like a bag of tatties when they are offered a punt: I piss myself laughing any time a politician accuses someone of talking this country (UK) down or starts talking about how great the UK is. How the f**k anyone would want to live here as opposed to pretty much any European country is beyond me. And now thanks to these self serving fuckers on both sides of the house, the ability to freely live and work anywhere in Europe has been closed off - mainly on account of those who know their place following the lead of their masters. This fuckin country

  35. Its a source of embarrassment because they’ve been confronted with the truth of how the clubs see each other and what the relationship is really like. Their lifelong struggle against their enemies is nothing more than a showpiece brand to be marketed beyond these shores.

  36. Another issue is that the NHS has been fetishised in the same way the military has in America - even more so in the last two years. When it works and you get the service your taxes pay for, there’s almost an expectation that you have to act like your accumulator has come in or that you’ve had a stroke of good fortune. NHS pressure shouldn’t be headline news or a particular consideration for the wider public, and if it is being talked about should be from the perspective of discussions around government funding rather than cranking up the COVID fear factor based on scenes from Bergamo two years ago.
