  1. During the pandemic there has been no shortage of unedifying mewling from the older generation about ‘irresponsible kids’, so it’s no surprise to find boomers wailing about vaccine hesitancy from the younger generation. When the JVCI can’t make a convincing case that the benefits of vaccination for under 30s outweighs the potential risks, even when the risk of a dangerous adverse reaction to the vaccines is vanishingly small (1.1 cases per 100k in age group 20-29 suffering serious harm from vaccination (AZ) compared to 0.8 cases per 100k ICU admissions prevented by vaccines in the same age group, according to JVCI’s own data) then it’s crystal clear that there is very little compelling evidence to suggest that the under 30s need to be vaccinated for their own good. Indeed the evidence suggest the opposite - that vaccination is riskier for under 30s than contacting the virus, contrasting sharply with the clear benefits offered by vaccination to older cohorts. It’s probably fair to say that (notwithstanding their general incompetence) both the Scottish and English governments are fully aware of the negligible risks presented to the younger generation by the virus, and (whatever their pronouncements to the contrary suggest) there is an unspoken acceptance in government that the virus will circulate freely among the younger, healthier age groups, and that natural immunity by infection will play almost as significant a role as vaccination in ensuring that the under 30s acquire immunity. The contention that kids have some altruistic debt to their elders or moral obligation to get vaccinations they don’t really need for the benefit of the fully-vaccinated, who are currently enjoying maximal protection, is so deeply engrained in the popular mindset that it’s taken for granted, but it’s really just another instance of the ‘what can the younger generation do for us’ mantra that has become endemic since the start of the pandemic. Thinking back to the disgraceful Scottish government TV advertising campaign, where kids were being exhorted not to kill their grandparents, it’s not difficult to see how this view became mainstream. What can the younger generation do for us? Well apart from accepting the hugely diminished experience that now passes for an education over the last 18 months (with more to come), and seeing their job opportunities wither on the vine, while their social opportunities and leisure pursuits (live music, arts, hospitality, nightclubs, sports, dating etc.) are stigmatised and criminalised. All the stuff that older generations were able to enjoy to the full are the very things that we’ve demanded younger generations sacrifice to keep us old timers safe. I’ve got a 17-year old daughter who is going to Uni in September, and she’s taken it upon herself to get vaccinated, (by going to a drop-in centre, not because she’d received a blue letter - she hasn’t). I’m delighted that she chose to get vaccinated, but I’d have been just as supportive of her had she chosen not to. The pandemic has effectively ruined the last 18 months of her life, which is a much more significant proportion for her than it is for me, at a time when having a normal social life (meeting friends and prospective partners) is a crucial part of her development and mental well-being. I’m acutely aware of the sacrifices that she, her friends, and indeed all youngsters have made. It’s long past time for double-vaccinated old timers like myself to start letting the younger generations (to whom we are already hugely indebted) enjoy their lives once again - restriction free - without stigmatising them as reckless or irresponsible, and without threatening to crack down on them and their favoured pursuits at the first opportunity. There’s a disproportionate amount of stick being used to beat younger generations with, and a negligible amount carrot on offer in a dystopian new world where governmental control of businesses and draconian restrictions on civil liberties have become the new normal. It’s not the responsibility of the younger generations to protect the elderly any more: the vaccines are doing a perfectly good job of this, and (in conjunction with occasional boosters if needed) will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Ultimately all the fuss about vaccine hesitancy among the young is simply masking an incontrovertible truth: Covid simply isn’t much of a threat to anyone that isn’t elderly and / or afflicted with multiple co-morbidities, and the apparatus of governmental control that has inhibited, controlled and restricted our lives since the start of the pandemic has represented a much greater threat to the welfare of the younger generation than the virus.

  3. You highlighted that 34% of the cases were in people aged under 19, in your rush to blame the scum for catching a virus, you are ignoring the fact that most of them have had no opportunity to be vaccinated until very recently, and that it would be virtually impossible for them to be double vaccinated.

  5. Are you just continuing to ignore the salient point of this entire discussion? Namely that of the U19 category (which is responsible for over a third of cases), you have only a small number who have had the opportunity to be double vaccinated (literally only people who were 18 by April), another group for whom it is only possible to be single vaccinated (anyone 16, 17 or just turned 18) and a further large group who still are not able to be vaccinated at all. Therefore, regardless of uptake rates for the vaccine, it was patently obvious that this group would have the highest case rates. Particularly when you add in the fact that people in the U25 age group are most likely to be the ones in low paid service industry jobs who throughout the pandemic have been running around putting themselves at risk in order to provide goods and services to the very same smug middle class people and pensioners who are now preaching to them about rising case rates and collective responsibilities and so on.

  6. On the field, it’s easy to forget how good we have it just now because it’s been this way for a few seasons now. We play, IMO, the best football in the lower leagues and we turn it on most weeks. Even when we lose or draw we still have fantastic passages of play and make chances and pull the other team around and it’s so, so good to watch. Off the park I feel as though we can get much better. Our social media channels could be more engaging. We could do more to encourage fans who currently don’t go to games but have a vested interest in the club to start coming to a few home games. Same goes for those who currently come to a few home games, can they come along a few more times? What do we need to do to target them and incentivise it for them? Your social output is intrinsically linked to these matters. How are we trying to capture a new audience from the short attention span Tik Tok generation when our two videos a week are a 10 minute John McGlynn pre-match interview and a 10 minute highlights package. These things are great for me because I already have a great knowledge of the football club and it answers questions I want asked, but to a casual fan is that engaging? A quick glance at Motherwell’s twitter output shows you how’s it’s done. Relatable content to people who might not be as invested in the football club as the weirdos like us who post on this forum. Stuff like having your tickets on sale in plenty time seems like such a straight forward, simple thing but it’s not been done in the very recent past. Same goes with actually announcing the walk up prices. Just not announcing it isn’t an option. Tell folk why it’s that price and justify it. Don’t let cars park on the concourse when fans are exiting the stadium. Communicate to the supporters when things go wrong. I don’t want to put the boot in to the club, that’s not what this is about, it’s about wanting us to take the next step in our development and start to grow as a club, because if we have ambitions of being in the Premiership, which we very obviously do, then we need that level of investment in infrastructure that’s been afforded to the playing side of the club also distributed to our non-playing side.

  10. This. Every club will have homophobes, racists and wierdos in their support. Some arseholes never seem to learn or move on from that type of shit sung or shouted at matches. The rest of us that feel a bit better educated about it should not be using those arseholes as examples of an entire club, it becomes very much a dose of whataboutery and ends up being a bit oldfirmy. We shouldn't be arguing on this subject, we should be in agreement.

  11. To be published in early November. 720 pages (two hardback books, 360 pages each) of never-before-seen photos of old Scottish football grounds. Mostly 1940s to 80s. Every club in the country is covered. Three years in the making, An awful lot of searching through old negatives in newspaper and magazine archives. I've never enjoyed a project so much in my entire life.

  20. **Fantasy Golf Week 33** At last He's finally done it !! After what seems like an eternity, the fantasy golf standings have been updated. In other news, big Tony Finau won the Northern Trust in New Jersey after Cam Smith pumped a ball so far OB, it almost crossed the Hudson River. It was no less than Smith deserved, after continuing to sport the worst hairdo/moustache combo the game has ever seen. Elsewhere, Johannes Veerman won the strangely named D+D Real Czech Masters, which implies the existence of a D+D Fake Czech Masters somewhere, presumably won by someone like Stenrik Henson. About 2/3'ds of the league have Finau, including the leader, so it's as you were. A couple also had Smith, so the gap has shortened slightly. Overall Standings 1893 @die hard doonhamer 1686 @Ro Sham Bo 1670 @Tartan Dave 1587 @peasy23 1426 @J_Stewart 1398 @lichtie23 1376 @Honest_Man#1 1366 @alta-pete 1363 @Proposition Joe 1306 @Mr Kane and the lemon cafe 1155 @Distant Doonhamer All to play for at the top of the race to whistling straits table. There's 4 weeks left, but 3 are bonus point weeks. 1251 @die hard doonhamer 1126 @Ro Sham Bo 1116 @Tartan Dave 1080 @peasy23 884 @Honest_Man#1 879 @lichtie23 799 @Proposition Joe 783 @J_Stewart 733 @Distant Doonhamer 728 @alta-pete 581 @Mr Kane and the lemon cafe First stop this week is the Swiss Alps and the Omega European Masters at the iconic Crans-Sur-Sierre. One of the most photogenic courses in the world, this 1906 design was renovated by the late Seve Ballesteros and now bears the great man's name. It now clashes with the Fed Ex Cup finals, so there are weaker fields aiming for the 'red jacket' than the illustrious list of former winners would suggest. We're down to a field of 70 for the 2nd week of the Fed Ex Cup finals, the BMW Championship. A first time on tour for Caves Valley, a 2002 Tom Fazio design which has also hosted a Senior US Open. It'll have great facilities and be in great condition, but it's not really a stand out track, situated near the City of Baltimore, home of course to TV's greatest show, The Wire. 1.5x bonus points up for grabs here motherfuckers.

  26. The Lowland League were quick enough to propose and vote for Colt teams but havent even spoke about more promotion spots for 3 feeder leagues below! [emoji849][emoji849] The SPFL gets called out for being a Self preservation league when Lowland League probably even worse with potential for 0 or just 1 team relegated from currently an 18 team league! Why not propose for 18 team league going forward and automatic promotion from East, West & South leagues as mentioned in podcast with 3 up and 3 down. From the outside I really don't think Lowland League teams are interested in making the league more competitive as will be harder for team at top for promotion to SPFL once top East & West teams are promoted although I'd like to think Bonnyrigg and Bo'ness would love to get their local rivalries back with East teams plus renewing rivalries against likes of Talbot, Clydebank, Meadow would add a lot. For teams like Edinburgh Uni, Stirling Uni and Cumbernauld Colts they don't want to mention extra relegation spots as more likely to be relegated not just to tier 6 but tier 7 or below once they do eventually go down in a few years time. So they know once out Lowland League they likely won't be back at that level.. When moving senior West Teams should really have asked for automatic promotion as part of joining the pyramid as Lowland League teams obviously really don't want to risk chance of dropping down the leagues while West Premier Division teams have 6 or 7 relegated this season and East Premier Division teams 4 relegated from their respective top divisions.

  30. It's quite amazing, this attitude to young people*. Not only did they have their lives torpedoed along with the rest of us, to protect other people (even more so for a 19 year old than myself at 35 for example), but they also have seen an already difficult housing market become borderline impossible, have had their actual prime in terms of some of the best times of their lives cut, will have their academic qualifications called into question as they attempt to enter an even more crowded employment market than before, now they are scum for not getting injected with a vaccine that is in the vast majority of cases, more likely to cause harm than the virus is. *Its young people in general that get it, but the attitude towards anyone who has the temerity to catch a very infectious airborne virus is also mental. Immediate assumption of wrongdoing.....

  31. What the f**k is this whataboutery from a Dunfermline fan? Yes, Dundee fans have absolutely said shite things and sang shite songs. Bringing up posts from 8 years ago to prove that point is absolutely tragic when the point at hand is that people are legitimately saying they're going to bring up and sing about a player's family member and abuse them to try and get a kick out of said player. You acted like a nasty fucking piece of work the other day in the Dundee thread. Absolutely no surprise to see you pull out some OF fan style whataboutery here and say, 'Aye, but your support have done this...'

  32. I highly doubt Ellis had to sum the season up to anyone, he'll have been given the job knowing what the objective was. Dempster herself has said on TV that we're not necessarily aiming for back to back promotions; the plan is to build a long term, sustainable model. The fact that we didn't go all out this summer with our signings, and the club invested in other areas, suggests that's probably true. If what was reported in the media is accurate, that's exactly why McKinnon left. He was more interested in "doing a Gretna", spending big, and climbing the leagues as quickly as possible, whereas other people at the club have different plans. Regardless, we have a good squad, and a full time side at this level should be fighting it out at the top end of the table and I think we will be (even if I do also believe winning the league is unlikely).

Seems to be on the mend now, although it's a bit worrying that she's been ill with two different issues in a month having never been ill before. She found an antibiotic in her tea tonight so gobbed that part on the kitchen floor.

As he clambered about his bed lifting pillows and his quilt etc I’d turn the telly off and on when he wasn’t looking. Ten full minutes passed before the wife said enough was enough.
