  1. When you look back over the last 12 months, the UK Gov and SG have been consistent in adding restrictions based on "the science" but never go back and remove them when it becomes apparent that the science doesn't really show they are impactful at all: Sanitising surfaces regularly Banning Alcohol Closing hospitality Masks Banning Spectators Are a few examples of measures that were brought in based on the science at the time, but, despite their being plenty of evidence that the impact of each being (at best) minimal, restrictions are never lifted. They are left in place because "well we might as well." The only thing I can think of that was brought in and then binned, was banning hospitality from playing background music. The only logical reason I can think of for this approach is to give the continued impression that they are somehow "in control" of the virus. But the knock-on effect is that there is a not inconsiderable group of the public who believe that not having these restrictions in place is excessively dangerous. This mentality will take a long time to shift. To give an example, there is a bar in Glasgow which has put in planning permission for a large outdoor beer garden. This should be welcomed, but there are comments under it begging this to be denied because "It's too big - how can the staff make sure no-one stays for longer than two hours?!"

  4. It just confuses the life out me that the govt, for better or worse, have said what we are going to do, yet the media are determined to reshape the discourse by continually getting these people on to discuss their particular flavour of response like it's an open debate still to be settled. It's good that there will be a booster program later in the year, this should ensure that vaccine progress isnt harmed. All of this should be in the background now though. Have we thought about variants? Yes. Do we have a plan to ensure they dont put us back to square one? Yes. Well ok then. The worst narrative currently on the go for me, the most concerning one, is the flippant way in which folk talk about SD like it's fine to keep in place till, just whenever really. I said before, but never really elaborated, I think that the recent fall back in the media (including the daily briefing) from reporting the numbers is pish poor. We are still living under hugely unprecedented restrictions, and the reason for them to remain in place is slipping from view and being replaced by outbursts about foreign travel etc. I know the data exists if you want to go look for it. Point is, I shouldnt have to. If you want to retain emergency powers and have the people remain vigilant in observing them, the reason for doing so should be front and centre of my consciousness at all times. I think theres a real slow burning loss of perspective of what's happening here and the lingering chat over how ling we should "social distance" for is the worst of it.

  8. It’s not happy clapping though. It’s giving a chance to a manager who’s in the door 5 minutes and is already taking stick for the way we’re playing with a team he didn’t build. I don’t really know what you’re expecting from this squad right now tbh. We don’t have very good players in case you hadn’t noticed.

  9. Absolutely howling at Leitch even hinting at capacity crowds not being allowed in May 2022 against the backdrop of 51.1% of Scottish adults being vaccinated in March 2021. The man is an absolute rocket. Also howling at him thinking you can control the crowd at something like TRNSMT, and that it will go ahead without a normal sized crowd. There's no way it will make money if social voids like him have their way and ban alcohol sales and limit the crowd to a couple of thousand, meaning it wouldn't go ahead.

  10. Yes and I thought my point was pretty obvious too. The current government aren't going to care if the Scotch are outraged. They simply do not, and will not, care. A number of folk on here appear to be living in some weird fantasy where "international pressure" forces the UK government into conceding a referendum. It's not at all realistic. An independence referendum isn't going to happen during this current government's lifespan; be that until 2024 or 2029.

  18. I once got paid 500 quid cash in hand for doing some work with a pal who was a joiner. I was a poor student and usual rates were 200 a week but because this was an NHS contract he was able to rip the pish on the price of the job and we were all quids in. The heady excitement of having 500 cash in hand (It was about 2004, that would be like having 520 pounds now) and having been paid in 100 quid notes, which I had never had before either, fused in my weed addled mind to create a new memory of having been paid with a 500 quid note. As I wasn't sure of the memory I wisely asked on here if anyone had had a 500 pound note before and the P&B masses were able to advise therefore preventing any embarrassment or looking foolish on my part.

  25. I'm genuinely going to fucking lose it if I see one more of these smug, "haha here comes another lockdown!" tweets. If there's a fourth lockdown, it won't be because we let people sit outside in parks. The fact we ever banned them from doing so is the far more worrying aspect.

  27. Well, well, well. This week ends my time in Division A. A quick glance at the table will reveal that I have lost all 16 of my games thus far - and may well complete the Brechin City in the final two fixtures. A bruising experience. However, I would like to pay tribute to all of my opponents - who have all been excellent competitors and gracious in victory. I couldn't have picked better people to lose at chess to. Maybe I'll be back in the top tier at some point in the future. Until then, I'll send you a postcard from the seaside leagues. Yer pal, Richey.

  31. Sridhar said that the AZ vaccine isn’t effective against the South African variant, but she was quoting a single study that showed lack of protection against mild to moderate illness. No-one in the study became seriously ill and it wasn’t Carried out on the dosing schedule used in the vaccine rollout. It’s not a worthless study but it’s not something to make sweeping statements about vaccine effectiveness over. For Sridhar to make a claim that this shows the vaccine doesn’t work against the South African variant is deeply irresponsible, given her official position and her media profile.

  34. Airdrie fans like myself keep supporting the side when we see a chance of improvement. I, like many others have lost that hope today. We are, and have been under Murray, a side that relies on opponents mistakes from set pieces rather than build up play. We have too many players who cannot retain possesion for any length of time and a general lack of quality in key areas. Those that can retain possession are usually on the bench (Sabatini). What troubles me is that we have players who are actually regressing under Murray. Leon McCann is a prime example of a young guy who came to us, comfortable on the ball and full of confidence and now look at him. It is perfectly clear that many of our players would perform far better with other sides.

  41. There’s someone at my work who is like this. Used to ring people at 8.01 to make sure they were in the office and not a minute later. Rang me up at one point early doors of WFH, and I left it a few hours and called him back. First thing he says is “I called 2 hours ago and it rang out...” and then an awkward silence as he expects me to explain what I’ve been doing for the past couple of hours. When I said “Yes I’m aware, and what do you want?” I could almost hear the blood vessels exploding in his eyeballs through the phone.
