  1. I am quite thankful i've never had to walk past someone who has just been stabbed. I'd like to think that, should it ever happen, my first instinct would not be to take a picture.

  3. The palpable seethe and anger from Heart of Midlothian's staff and supporters is a real joy to watch. They have now hit the deepest depths of mindless rambling to pull up as much smoke and mirrors as possible to paper over the fact there is absolutely nothing they are going to be able to do to stop their deserved relegation. As hilarious as it is, the wishes and prayers from HOMFC supporters for as many clubs to die as possible is absolutely outrageous. You have been relegated (deservedly) for probably at worst 75% of a year, yet you think adequate reparation is the wide-scale liquidation of the majority of the Scottish clubs who voted democratically for the fairest and least damaging collective outcome? Have a word with yourself and be careful what you wish for. Enjoy the Championship, you losers.

  7. I see the far right commentators and far left commentators are already picking upon the fact that one of the people involved was black. The far right already claiming that he was definitely the perpetrator and this is the problem with this country. The left countering that he's just another galling statistic and a victim in this before any information is out. Many of the 'far' end of either side seem to absolutely revel at jumping to all sorts of conclusions without any sort of information to hand....all to get a fucking point across. I mean seriously, how hard is it to go through your life and not be a completely irredeemable twisted c**t 100% of your waking hours?

  9. Neil Alexander? Would have thought he might have made enough through football to not have to worry about getting another job. Thought he was full-time with us as well. I don’t know, he’s someone on the coaching staff I’ve never paid much attention to. As a general point, this goading of clubs about finances during this current pandemic isn’t something I am taking any enjoyment out of. It’s another shit by-product of the whole situation, fans having a wee wind up regarding money. People are losing businesses, jobs and more, plus society in the wider context is looking pretty grim economically (and just in general). Scottish football is so fragile in terms of cash flow and we don’t have the luxury of leagues like the Bundesliga who, despite COVID-19, are still rolling in oceans of cash. I fear we are still at the very beginning of this and that Scottish football still has a lot of horrible, horrible shit to come. I love a bit of back and forth about football stuff but personally this financial “haha, look at them” circus doesn’t sit well with me (especially given that none of us really know the actual finances behind the headlines and rumours). I know nobody asked for my opinion on the matter, but that’s what I think. Anyway, Nelms has shares in 71 Brewing does he not? I’ve been making substantial contribution to that business these last few months, so there is that.

  14. Bump.... Who remembers this thread? Romeo Jr should have been having his graduation today but obviously that's been fired into he sun. Weather permitting we will get the gazebo up and have a few drinks in the garden with a couple of his friends. But he has just received his result and got a 2-1 (Politics) from Glasgow university. He will now go on to do his PGD in teaching, Very proud. ETA - this also proves my theory that intelligence is genetic mainly on the fathers side.

  15. A few years ago, I was very active on a local forum. It was a fun, social group and many of us formed on-line friendships. Some knew each other in real life too and often met up for barbecues, Superbowl parties and so on. It was around the time of the Bush/Blair Iraq invasion and even though this is a predominantly Republican area, there were a few Liberals on the site who were willing to make their voices heard. There was a lot of back and forth on the Political section and things often got heated. However, it never strayed beyond on-line arguments. Whenever we met in real life, political discussion was banned and the friendships crossed party-lines without a problem. Then the original owner of the site retired and gave up the management to one of the administrators, who happened to be a hard-core Tea Party supporter. Within weeks she'd installed some of the ugliest, most rabidly right-wing forum members as moderators and the site went downhill fast. Before long, all the most active posters, liberal and conservative, drifted away and the forum became an echo-chamber of Bush supporters arguing about who of them hated liberals most. During the fun days, when we had all the social events, it had been common for some folks to post photos of the gatherings on the forum, identifying people by their user names. All innocent enough, right? Well, about a year after I'd stopped posting, someone must've scoured back through them and recognised me. Maybe they'd seen me out walking my dogs, or otherwise out and about in the neighbourhood. They then posted a photograph of my house...my fucking house complete with address on the forum with the caption "Here's where an America hater lives." Fortunately, a friend alerted me to it but despite this being a gross violation of the site rules, it took me over a week to get the moderators to delete the post, and only then after I threatened legal action. Someone must also have recognised my wife because shortly afterwards she came home from the supermarket in tears after some little Republican shit had accosted her in the car park, and shouted, and I quote "Tell that asshole of a husband of yours he should f**k off back to England if he knows what's good for him." She didn't even have an account on the forum. I never did find out the identities of the twat who posted the photo, or the shit who went after my wife. They may or may not have been the same person. Fortunately, nothing further happened but I'm still livid about it all these years on. So then when I saw that clip of Johnathon Pie ranting about how liberals were to blame for Trump's election because they "were mean to conservatives"; I would cheerfully have taken out my rage on him.

  17. As an example, the NYPD receives a bigger share of the New York City budget than housing, health, homeless services, youth and community development and workforce investment combined. The NYPD also has a huge number of officers per head of population and their headcount has been increased in recent years. The latest budget put forward has over $2B of cuts across various areas, with 3% of the education budget being cut. Yet less than 1% of the NYPD budget is cut. The notion that diverting any of that NYPD funding to other areas is unavoidably going to create a lawless wasteland with no policing is evidently an utterly ridiculous position to take.

  21. In Scotland, the NRS number is, I think 4129. The total Excess deaths for the period is 4496? So 367 deaths in that period where Covid didn't get mentioned on the death certificate. Someone dies of a stroke but if covid gets onto the death certificate, it gets counted in the numbers. In England the equivalent numbers are 42k and 65k How good is the Scottish NHS that only 367 people wouldve died in the last 3 months above the average, but for Covid? Or is it that reporting of Covid on death cerificates inflates that number to near the total excess death numbers in a way that doesn't happen in England. I will repeat: the positive test deaths can be compared across UK nations because they have the same testing threshold for being counted. The excess deaths can be compared internationally for obvious reasons. The NRS/ONS data sets are subject to far more variability in reporting thresholds. On the two data sets you can confidently compare, Scottish mortality is lower. If it makes you feel better, this may have nothing to do with the government.

  24. A pet peeve of mine is how many players are open about the fact they support one of the OF whilst playing for another Scottish team. Darren O'Dea used to piss me right off retweeting things about Celtic on the daily when he was our captain on the Saturday, Alex Rae acting as a pundit for Rangers TV whilst our manager, Bomber doesn't need mentioned and finally, players going to a Celtic European game taking a picture and putting #Paradise. Might seem petty but I view it as disrespectful, but more than that, what chance do you have of challenging them on the park when half your team has put the opposition on a pedestal and is openly idolising them?

  27. Yup, it's just a cut and paste job. They must have had a few complaints in and think if they send that out that will be the end of it. It's not. I have a case number and I'm taking it further. There have been other occasions where I felt I should have said something over the years, but the bit is between the teeth now. Ultimately it may do nothing, but I cannot let his/their output continue to insult my intelligence.

  28. Its an inevitable outcome of splitting decision making under devolution. We didn't really get a choice on when lockdown could happen, or when we could close our borders or even generally where we sourced our advice. So it becomes about how well or not Scotland manages to mitigate stupid decisions made for it, rather than being able to take a holistic view in a grownup fashion of what our nation should've done.

  31. It basically lists every "non natural" death in any communist state. It's laughable. To take deaths due to famine during the Great Leap Forward in China, for instance, there's no doubt there were huge mistakes made by the Maoists in moving to a centralised agricultural system (to say nothing of their ridiculous personal blast furnaces idea). Their ideas were based on a scientific ideal that has since been disproved and many people within communism went along with it blinded by the fact it fitted communism ideals. It was also during the worst period of natural disasters (first famine, then flood) in areas of China that meant even a "perfect" agricultural system would have led to deaths. So did deaths occur due to a combination of poor agricultural practise and natural disasters? Were people who forwarded this bad practise blinded by ideology? Yes. Is it easy to blame that on just "communism"? Yes. Is that accurate? Of course not. Otherwise we need to blame every single death by famine outwith communism as a death by capitalism and those who use the Black Book as a basis are usually not keen on using that same methodology in reverse.

  39. Or, more likely, you can expect to be cherry picking stats without looking at them in detail. For instance we know that black people are more likely to commit crimes (and, also, be victims but that part's often left out) and, therefore, are more likely to have interactions with police officers and, therefore, more likely to be killed. However this ignores the fact that the number of black people incarcerated or killed/injured by the police is STILL disproportionate to the crime figures. It also ignores the figures when adjusted for the fiscal disparity between black people and others in the US. When the figures are shown by financial level of criminals the disparity drops. It also ignores the evidence that black people are more likely to be caught than white people who commit the same crimes and more likely to face tougher sentencing than white people which limits their financial abilities (and becomes a generational burden) and creates an ever increasing spiral of poverty along race based lines. And even if we did ignore all that other very important stuff it still leads to the question: "why are black people more likely to commit crime?" if your answer is anything other than societal racism writ large across and entire nation (if not world) then, yes, you are really just a racist apologist because surely if the answer is not down to social factors that affect black people more (societal racism) the only other answer would be something inbuilt to black people themselves? And that IS racist and people who point out the statistics you have, without the other statistics that provide context, are enabling racist stereotypes to continue. Racist apologist doesn't seem that big a stretch under those circumstances.

  41. This is the core point that is completely missed by the media. We can all see what benefit Rangers and Celtic would potentially get from this if it works. However, even if it does miraculously transform the fortunes of the national team, or lead to untold riches for the smaller clubs, that isn't why I or others go and watch lower league football. I don't think the average football fan, especially at lower league level, cares enough about the overall national game to detriment the product they invest most of their time and money in. And nor should they. The game at that level does not exist to make the bigger teams better in the long run.
