  1. Increasingly the pair of them are hiding behind proxy songs and symbols, as they stuff they really want to do gets too hot to handle. So at the last OF game there were paratroop regiment flags prominently on display. They'll claim this is about supporting Our Brave Boys, but really what it's about is celebrating the shooting of innocent Catholic civilians. Before anyone takes issue with that, consider this; they don't fly the flag of any other regiment. Just the guys responsible for Bloody Sunday. Celtic are the same with the balaclavas - as Patrick Kielty calls them, Northern Ireland's national dress. It's all nudge nudge, wink wink, aren't we clever for misbehaving in ways that can't get us into trouble. These guys learned this stuff at school. Scotland would be a much better place without either of those football clubs existing at all.

  4. Of course it is. The GERs figures are designed to show the economy of Scotland in union.....not Scotland's economy. It's a big difference...and one that some peanut brains will never have the capacity to register. There are serious commentators in other countries who have looked at the situation and made comment that if you were to swap any wealthy small European country with Scotland then they would also appear to show a large regional deficit towards the South East, based on the methadolgy of GERs The reasons for such a deficit being shown in the GERs figures are multifold. -the figures cannot accurately differentiate all taxation figures on a regional basis - they have no way of determining inter regional UK trade - they fail to account for Luxembourg effect on taxation take in the SE to the detriment of other UK areas. -they fail to account for multiplier effect on taxation take based on heavy spend and resultant growth in the SE to the detriment of other UK areas. This should not be understated. In effect they do not show how this nation (Scotland) has a large part of its revenue raised spent on another area (the SE) and then does not get to show anything from the resultant growth and associated growth in tax take....whilst said other area has it added to its pot....thus further skewing the figures. In effect a hidden wealth transferral from the regions to the centre or "Hunger games" economics if you like. -GERs figures are not capable of showing how a different fiscal policy set would boost Scottish income. This is not a fault of the GERs figures as they are not designed to do this. It is a fault of the muppets who use them to bash an independent Scotlands economy and claim we will have this whopping great big deficit to face on independence.

  9. With the golden days of Levi Sta Press and made to measure Arthur Black shirts a distant memory, who better than a post-menopausal guy like myself to guide you through what not to wear. 1 - baseball caps. The name is a giveaway; these are for guys at their work, but only if their work is being a baseball player. On the back of the head at a jaunty angle, back to front, slightly sideways or, worse of all, perched on top of your hair to make you 4 inches taller is seriously wanky behaviour. 2 - Mirror sun glasses. Everyone, but everyone, wearing these looks like a total div. The only exceptions are guys on a horse with a rifle guarding chain gangs in Alabama. 3 - Trousers. FFS people, sort this out. There are two rules for trousers; (1) the waist band (and there's a clue in there) should be pretty much near the waist. No one is impressed by the Armani writing on your underpants, and (2), they should reach your shoes. Three inches above the shoe with white socks or, God forbid, no socks is beast behaviour. 4 - Matching gear with your beloved. Nothing screams wankers like having the same gear on as the person who's with you, especially if its Star Trek stuff or matching shell suit style anoraks. An honourable mention for the wee Celtic ultras who dress alike. It's fuckin' creepy, kids, as if yer maws have bought a job lot of black gear. 5 - Harry Potter. Seriously - adults in Hogwarts sweatshirts. No wonder we lost the empire, as my auld maw would say. Bubbling under - / spacers in your ears. Whit is that all about? / anything by a "designer" - the Looky Looky man on the beach in Spain is selling the same stuff you're wearing for a fiver.

  13. Always pretty sad when someone retires and folk make up stories and speculation rather than just appreciating the good stuff he did. He played really well for us for a while, scored some goals etc but injuries have held him back. After Thursday he maybe just feels he can’t hack both club and country at this level. Cheers Snoddy, all the best.

  23. I'm not really sure why you've lifted a load of shite players to make whatever point you're trying to make. You've obviously not understood mine. The players you've listed weren't good enough then, and not good enough now. That's not what I'm saying. Should we persist with the likes of John Fleck or Graeme Shinnie (two random examples) as back-up midfielders in the squad when they'll never be the future of our midfield? While there's never any guarantees in football, it's a reasonable shout to suggest, considering where he is at Chelsea just now, Billy Gilmour will be spending his career at a level as high, or higher, than the midfielders he'll be competing with to get into the Scotland midfield over the next few years. There will always be the necessity to pad out our squad with 'decent' players who'll never get more than a handful of caps, of course there will be, but when there's obvious talent coming through, we should be getting these guys involved in the senior squad as soon as possible.

  24. The actual link to the study itself is here: https://blogs.sps.ed.ac.uk/scottishreferendumstudy/files/2015/03/Scottish-Referendum-Study-27-March-2015.pdf Note that, on the age breakdowns, the numbers are similar, but no the same as those illustrated in the BBC result: Note the discrepancy with the illustration from the BBC website, I tend to go with what is published on the academic website. However, it's when we look at the other demographic breakdowns that we see we cannot look at the result purely, or possibly even majorly in terms of the age old "people become more conservative" argument. Look at the nationality one first: Scots born, Scots resident voted in favour of Indy, other UK was nearly 3 to 1 against, and outside UK (i.e. EU born) was nearly 60/40 against. Men were far more for the idea than women were, Catholics and Atheists voted for, Protestant and Church of England against, the latter by a factor of 4 to 1. If we concentrate on the rUK born vs Scots born cohorts, assuming both groups have the same age spread in both groups, and assuming the same rational response within each age group then we cannot make the argument that the difference was down to the conservative economics of advancing age. It may of course be that the age spread was not equal, that the rUK population of Scotland is predominantly very old, and wealthy. We cannot rule that out without detailed census data, but it doesn't wholly chime with the likely profiles of people working here. It is also the case that even if the rUK population was overwhelmingly pension age, their pensions would've been protected by the existing UK state, and independent of the re-emergent Scottish state, so their financial risk would be minimised regardless. More likely that there was simply a cultural argument at work there. Another interesting point to examine is on the age demographics, where the proportion of No vote continues upwards past the point of pension age, presumably when you are at your most financial risk. This in itself is undermined by the fact that there is no significant bump in No votes at the ages when most people become parents or house owners. Significant for me is the cross over point at 40-49. In 2014, that meant people who were kids or teenagers around the time of the 79 election. Thus for me there is a pretty simple cultural, historical trend here. The changes wrought by the de-industrialisation (whether you think it necessary or not) and the demise of what had been the post war settlement in favour of monetarist, neo-liberal economics (whether you think it necessary or not) meant that how people have tended to view the State changed with it. The older you are, the closer you are to the generation who fought the war, who revelled in all things British and when Scotland really was referred to as 'North Britain' on maps. After '79 you have a far different approach to Britain emerging, something only heightened in younger generations who grew up with devolution. That process normalised the idea in younger voters minds of Scotland making it's own decisions. That's the back breaker for Unionism, not the generational cross point that occurs in 2023 when it's expected more than 400,000 old folk will have pegged it. We are simply ploughing through a process whereby romanticism with Britain fades away to be replaced, ironically, with a fairly transactional view of Britain amidst a Scottish political scene that has already semi detached itself. Lastly, the whole idea that people get more conservative and risk averse is probably way overstated. It's less that people become more conservative with time and rather than succeeding generations become more progressive while older ones stand still.

  25. Poor comment DI as the guys there are doing everything within their resources to build a junior football club that the community will follow. They have relocated as a first step towards that. The next step is to enhance spectator provision of viewing and cover. That comes with a financial cost off the park at the same time as trying to put a competitive team on it. My first visit to Gartcairn this season and the guys were first class on and off the park. We enjoyed good banter with their supporters who were magnanimous in defeat, as were the players and coaching staff. My only gripe was they had sold out the match programme by the time I arrived after being held up in traffic. [emoji6] T

  27. This union has been so successful that Scotland's population in comparison with rUK has dropped significantly over the last 3 centuries. It continues to do so.... Our biggest export has been and still is our people. We will soon be in a position where our aged population will struggle to sustain itself. The country is literally dying a slow death. Westminsters policies are aimed at the SE of England. They are doing and will do nothing to address Scotland's need. Indeed the xenophobic end of freedom of movement is going to drastically exacerbate the situation. That is why we need independence.

  29. Even though you are monumentally stupid, you still manage to be intellectually dishonest. Quite a feat. Celtic flourish in this bigoted ideology. In the recent past, we can think of hanging effigies, the Rodgers at work sign, the song you mention and many, many more. Given nearly everyone on this forum has grown up in Scotland, we'll all have first hand experience of it. In my own experience, the last Celtic game I went to (couple of years back), the guys walking behind me were singing the "I hope you die in your sleep Nacho novo" song. Not many of them, but it is ingrained in the society and culture of the club that this kind of filth is tolerated. It's even worse that it isn't challenged by those who support Celtic. Your knowing acceptance and whataboutery are embarrassing and indicative of the support of only two clubs in this country. Tbf, at least your making a start with your username, instead of something like magee for example with all the terrorist connotations that has.

  36. I have no quarrels with Partick, and am too young to resent McCall for being a dab or whatever. This will be a purely professional pumping, no gloating over our opponents, just a respectful 4-1 smashing with Hemmings rekindling his form with a brace, and Nelson and McDaid to clean up afterwards. A ceremonial goal will be given to Partick, provided GGH is the man to do it, and that'll be that. Thank you, next.

In 2019 I barely know any no voters and watching them switch 1 by 1 after telling them this would happen has been extremely satisfying. If no voters want to convince themselves nothing has changed I hope many stay away from the polls on referendum day assuming it's pointless voting and not needed

  44. You could start with players like Matt Phillips, Oli McBurnie, Steven Naismith, and Johnny Russell. All different types of forwards at their respective levels whose weaker parts of their game would look much stronger playing in the Scottish Championship. You could then even look at players like Marc McNulty and Chris Maguire, who are far too good for the level that Shankland is playing at. I'm not dismissing Shankland. I'm just saying that he is untested. Players and coaches have spoken highly about him in training, including this week, which is a good sign. It can be a tough job for a national team manager to determine who the best players actually are when the players are playing at a wide variety of levels. But I think it really should be stressed that the Scottish Championship is a terrible level of football when assessing even the minimum level that Scotland are aspiring to be at. This doesn't exclude Shankland. It just makes it difficult to tell what parts of his game he'll be able to take to a higher level, and which he won't.

  45. 1) The SNP don't have a majority in Glasgow 2) The SNP don't have a majority in Edinburgh 3) The majority of Scottish businesses are not based in our 2 largest cities. 4) There aren't 600,000 business parking spaces that would be subject to a workplace parking levy in Glasgow & Edinburgh combined. There are only just under 3 million vehicles in the whole country, so I doubt that 20% of them are employed by Glasgow & Edinburgh businesses with private car parking 5) You appear to be refusing to address the fact that the ability to levy this tax has been available elsewhere in your precious UK for more than 10 years. Why? That's five major mistakes in 26 words, without even including the misuse of elipses. You need to improve your trolling.

  46. The office I work in in is in Ninewells Hospital so I have to enter and leave by the main entrance. Every single time there are folk standing outside smoking. This is often very ill folk, in their hospital gowns, and sometimes attached to drips or in wheelchairs, despite no smoking signs everywhere. It's absolutely tragic. Hospitals should employ folk to stand outside with a bucket of water and a hose to soak anyone as soon as they light up.
