  3. Didn't reply to this earlier because I was out watching more Killie players playing for Scotland in one game than St Johnstone have had in the last 85 years. But anyway, the only reason I brought up clean sheets was because you incorrectly stated that Clark had more than Bain. Which he didn't. Since you asked, in the Premiership this season, Bain faced 46 shots and conceded 6 goals (13%). Clark faced 160 shots and conceded 41 goals (26%). That is to say, Clark conceded twice as many of the shots he faced. One might argue that it's not necessarily an exact like-for-like comparison, since Bain has a better defence in front of him too, which might mean the shots he faces might not be of the same quality. To address this, Wyscout (where I got this data from), also includes the expected number of conceded goals (xCG) for each goalkeeper (based on the probability of a goal being scored from each individual shot they faced). Based on this, Bain should have conceded 11.08 goals, but only conceded 6. Clark should have conceded 41.89 and conceded 41. In other words, Bain's performance was above average - he conceded 4.08 fewer goals than you would expect from the average keeper (37% better than average). Clark's performance was about as slap bang average as you could expect from a keeper - he conceded 0.89 goals fewer than you would expect (2% better). For comparison, Liam Kelly faced 156 shots and conceded 40 goals (26%), and the xCG suggested he should have conceded 45.4 goals (14% better than average).

  6. I'm fine with negativity if it's justified. Booing the team at half-time of the new manager's first game, in which we haven't played too badly, when he hasn't had long to pick the squad and train with them, against an organised side, isn't justified. For context: tonight Steve Clarke became the first manager not named Alex McLeish to win his first competitive game in charge this millennium.

  7. Football can go both ways at any level - if you're genuinely interested in the game over and above any emotional attachments or affiliations you may hold, then you'll be able to be entertained or thoroughly bored in almost equal measure by either the Champions League final or a bunch of hungover fatties clogging it out on a council pitch on a Sunday mid-morning. In general, I find women's football games less entertaining than men's games, and that can largely be attributed to the biological differences between men and women and the resultant impacts on the flow and nature of matches. Whether the goal and pitch size should be reduced or not, while they remain in-line with those used in the men's game, then matches will always tend to be played at a lower tempo and keepers (particularly the smaller ones) will struggle to save ostensibly savable-by-a-male shots, which will lead to gammons queuing up to point and laugh at their efforts. It also can't be forgotten that the Women's World Cup has only existed since the early 90s and that organised women's football worldwide only really came about a hundred years after the male equivalent, so there's still a huge amount of catching up needing done, but things are quickly moving in the right direction. Lots of people moan about the relative over-exposure of the women's game, but that's what is required to grow it, make it more competitive and entertaining and bridge the quality gap to the men's game. More and more girls are, thankfully, engaged with the game now and we've seen huge strides in this country in the past five to ten years alone with the women's game. If you don't like it then don't watch it; there's no need to callously point to the obvious flaws in something which is evolving and improving at a rate of knots. It's nice being able to add women's football to the enormous list of things Muzza is rattled by, though, having said that.

  12. I was also at the game and had a similar impression of it. None of the players necessarily played that badly - they all did the things that they're good at - but as a team it didn't really click. The most important part of Clarke's team at Killie (and at West Brom I think) was his midfield three. Last night he had three guys who are all very good players in their own right, and none of whom did anything wrong, but they were all a bit samey. The game was crying out for an Armstrong to inject a bit of energy. McTominay made a difference when he came on - his passes had much more zip to them. Before that, Marshall was the only guy who seemed to be playing with any urgency. The centre-backs were generally fine - having a brave one like Mulgrew who is comfortable on the ball is important on nights like that. Robertson was an excellent driving force, especially in the second half. I also thought O'Donnell was OK - he still looks a bit lacking in confidence when he's on the ball compared to the one man attacking machine I watch at Killie. You saw a bit of that with his chance in the second half though, and hopefully Clarke can drag it out of him. From a defensive point of view, I can't remember his man getting past him. Fraser was very good at driving us up the park and was probably my man of the match, but as you say the crosses generally weren't great. Forrest was a bit ponderous in attacking positions but looked dangerous. Brophy looked a bit lost at times but did an absolute power of work (as he always does) which might not have been obvious on TV but seemed to be appreciated by the crowd. He was left very isolated in the first half and none of the midfield were helping him press. He's 23 and this was a big step up for him, so it seems a bit harsh to immediately write him off given our lack of alternatives. You wouldn't want to be relying on him for a whole campaign so hopefully Griffiths can get himself back healthy. Burke impressed me for once, even before the goal. He was a good threat in the air and linked up well. However I think he'd be an empty shirt against Belgium - I'd still go for Russell there.

  13. Think the negativity needs to get to f**k. Was in the north stand tonight and a guy literally in front of me booing our own. Then when we went up 1 nil sat in his chair. Then when Cyprus equalised let off some pish practically celebrating then spouting about Clarke been not suitable killie b*****ds etc. Then fucked off. So much changes have happened over the past 12-16 years I have seen it all majority of it in person. Stability and getting behind the squad will make massive strides for us. Steve Clarke is there to get results at the moment. He had 3 or 4 weeks to get a squad picked and together at the end of the day. The volume of killie players is his reliability on players he knows. A wins a win a would rather win ugly on short notice. We would have drew that game in the past. If your coming to hampden to spout your negativity get to f**k it is not needed stay at home. Clarke might not be every bodies cup of tea but he will get results once he gets time in the role.

  17. today junior football and the town of Ardrossan lost one of its true gentlemen in Sam Morrison, anyone who visited Winton park would have come across sam in the last 50 years, the happy face and legendary bicycle that was almost as old as him. I remember in the lean times when the club could not afford to pay players in cash a local sponsor who happened to be a hamcurer gave Sam packets of bacon at cost price so the players could sell them to make a few bob, great idea until a carload of players got stopped by the police one night and found the boot full of bacon, a quick phone call to Sam sorted that one out, he was known as Ham Morrison at that time. God bless you mate, the club and town wont forget you

  18. I was just waiting for people to start blaming brophy, they really couldn't wait, it's absolutely hilarious that he's been written off after one game. Nevermind the fact that Forrest put in dreadful cross after dreadful cross, brophy made a few runs waiting for the ball behind but the players decided to work it out wide for yet another Forrest masterclass. Was he great? No. But it was his first game and the service was absolutely shameful, even if the balls in the box were good, that isn't his game (you literally just need to look at the size of him FFS). Is he good enough? Maybe not, but if you think he can be judged off of last night you're clueless. Get the ball in to his feet, get other players around him, STOP trying to put it on his head, then if it doesn't work out, we can go back to the tried and tested failures. As for the O'Donnell criticism, it's laughable, he's not a world beater but he played fine, the fact he's been one of the main targets when there was some abysmal defending from the rest of the defence that could have lead to goals is just pathetic really.

  19. Also, the anti-O'Donnell squad are talking out of their arses. He played fine, almost got the 2nd after a typical lung-bursting run and didn't give away any goals (unlike Robbo). McGinn seems to have at least one serious howler for Scotland every time he plays and nearly cost us a goal last night, but he avoids criticism. McKenna and Mulgrew were made to look like a pair of fannies as they allowed a guy to run onto a simple pass straight through the middle of them. I accept that the squad need time to play together and to get to know the style of play. Unfortunately, the next game is against the best team in the world. Luckily Sir Steve's Clarke's in charge. If he thinks McGinn, McKenna, O'Donnell, Mulgrew, Forrest etc are good enough, then that's fine by me.

  25. If you take the emotion out of watching your team at Scottish lower league level, it's pretty garbage (every thread for a game covered by BBC Alba has become a thesaurus for the word sh*te whenever any neutrals log on). It's the emotional gambling that has you going back for more, not the quality. Most just can't see it.

  29. Burke is now being hailed as a good-in-air striker? Every time I've watched him he been the very definition of dug-meat. Brophy didn't have a great game last night but far too many folk are writing off his entire career based on one game, which is just daft. I also don't know where the hatred for O'Donnell comes (and I'm an ayr fan FFS). He did fine, and that run in the second half almost resulted in a worldy. We're not blessed with talent, incase anyone hadn't noticed. Clarke will mould his team well, and hopefully get it right. I thought we were far, far too cautious in the first half last night, but ultimately we got out of jail - and the win was all that mattered. Against Belgium the opposite is true. I think our performance matters much more than the result (it's a free hit, but I want to see us compete more than last time against them). I wouldn't have booed, but I'd have been audibly exasperated with some of the slow build up of the first half. We let them dominate the early exchanges, and never put them under enough pressure. But in the end, it's a win.

  33. I won't be passing judgment on any player until he has at least had a couple of games for the rovers. We have seen it time and time again when a player comes without recommendation and smash it like Dalziel, Nisbet, Tade, Then on the flip side we bring in a player like Buchanan who over the previous 5 seasons was smashing them in and he struggles with consistency. We also had Wighton on loan. We all got excited about his prospect and tbh he was a total dud of a signing. All in all I will support any signing made by Mcglynn

  34. Not sure if there is a general Queens Park thread to put this or not. Andrew Robertson has had a fantastic rise in his career from the Spiders to Scottish International and Champions League winner in a relative short period of time. What is annoying me is that I have seen a lot of one of our own posts on social media recently from United and some Celtic fans on the basis he started out at Celtics academy and a good season at Tannadice that resulted in him getting his move south. Queens should also be given a lot of the credit and recognition for the part they played in his career, after all if they had not given him a chance to get his career going after his release by Celtic who knows how it would have turned out for him. The final thing I am going to say is all the best to Queens Park for the new season ahead.

  38. All in, a pleasing if stressful win. The positives: McKenna and Mulgrew had a good game together and looked a viable partnership to move forward with. McKenna is a bit raw with his passing but he can defend, which is the primary job of a defender. McLean had his best game in a Scotland shirt so far. Fraser and Robertson really is a dreamy partnership on the left flank. No surprise that both goals came from there. Good contributions from all three substitutes when they came on. Clarke called all three correctly. I would be surprised if all three didn't start on Tuesday. Our shape, discipline and defensive structure were much better than under McLeish (not difficult). Our response to the equaliser was top drawer. Negatives/things to be built on: Too ponderous in midfield for too long in the game. Lacked some direct action in the central area. Every time we start without Armstrong, we struggle to link the centre of midfield to the striker. Vital to how we want to play. McGregor and Forrest looked out on their feet after a long season, particularly McGregor. That should not take away from the effort of either, who put in reasonable displays. I just don't quite understand John McGinn's game enough to appreciate him. Fantastic work rate and running but his quality on the ball is often lacking. Thought he was average last night. Brophy really lacked support from the middle of midfield and was left an isolated figure too often. Not his fault but he will likely be frustrated. The goal we lost, poor moment from Andy Robertson. Basic error that could have been really costly.

  42. No, he doesn't 'need someone'. He either fits the formation or he can f**k off. He shouldn't be in the squad - and wouldn't be if it wasn't for Clarke (who, in theory should know him best). This is a team game, we set up with him up top but he never made one single dent in the game. He never tried to get involved, he never tried to link play. In fact, the only thi g he done all game was look straight along the line to the linesman when Robertson had opened the whole of the left side of the box up for him - and got caught offside. Majority laughed at him getting put in the squad, bemused when he was picked to start. This should be the only time he's included. Nowhere near good enough.

  43. Never a big gambler, but gave up betting on fitba last year as I was basically donating a fiver a week to a betting company and getting no entertainment in return. Woke early this morning and farting about decided to have a look at my old skybet account. I had a 40p balance. Sat and picked the favourites from all the Euro qualifiers in a 13 fold accumulater. Felt Scotland was the most likely to waste it, but still. 13 games for 40p would return about £117 and all I thought was it was a decent amount of entertainment for 40p. Never checked it till dinner time and by then I had 8 in the bag and £25.50 as a cash out offer. I gave it serious thought, 60 odd times your money is a great return but against potential £117 is pish and really it's only 40p of my money so f**k it, let it roll. France. The fucking c***s. Not a single shot on target. Shitebags. World champions? Shitebags. Awfy angry for 40p.
