  10. From the top flight - we're never ever eeever going to finish 1st apart from maybe on computer games. 2nd - 4th and the fun of Europe is extraordinarily unlikely barring an absolute miracle season, but it can be done (for an extreme example Motherwell have managed 2nd and, while I'd say they are bigger than us and there were other mitigating circumstances with Rangers' liquidation, I wouldn't say they were exponentially so). It's reasonable to say that it is unfair and unrealistic to expect to finish in those placings ahead of names like Hibs, Hearts, Celtic, Rangers and Aberdeen though. We've already shown that we can finish 6th, however. Perhaps points targets rather than actual placings would be a bit fairer, but I can't really be bothered checking the last few years standings. Another time, maybe. If we're in the 2nd tier the aim almost naturally flows to getting promotion (which seems reasonable enough, and pretty much everyone among the staff, fans and players make noises to that effect, on here or to the media or to whomever). Cup competitions in the 2nd tier or below are then pretty much judged on how much income they generate to make up for not being in the top tier. So surely the whole point of us being in the top flight is that it should, in theory, give us the chance to build a squad capable of competing for the League/Scottish cup AND keep us in the top flight, maybe dishing out the odd bloody nose or two to the bigger boys? I mean from personal experience supporting Thistle usually involves just taking each match or, at most, season on its own merits rather than having any overarching dreams for the club, and there are certain games which stick out over the years that I'm particularly glad I got to see... but it nonetheless sticks a bit in the craw to watch other clubs over the years - and not always clubs *that* much better supported than Thistle therefore not exactly megabucks when compared to us, either - put in heroic performances to beat the bigger names domestically, or get to at least experience the odd trip abroad to watch their team, or get to major domestic cup finals...

  13. Ah the standard Juniors shortsightedness. Let’s look 1 year away and not 5-10 that’s what saw you all miss the boat 6 years ago. Yes there are teams in the Lowland League who are inferior but that solely lies at the door of the SJFA who dismissed the pyramid at the start out of hand and vocally mocked it. So the SFA took who was willing to join to get the league started. Guess what now juniors want to join they’ll have to play through these teams or stay in a separate grade. The pyramid is happening and the Juniors have already started to drip across in the East the longer the West sits on its hands the more East dominated the Lowland League will become and instead of moaning about the quality of teams you’ll no doubt be moaning about the distance because they missed the next boat. Happy for the SJFA to remain separate and run their own grade but I’ll welcome any clubs that want to try and play as high as they can.

  14. From what I'm hearing, the PWG didnt go very well for TJ. No tier 6 across the board, it was never promised by anyone at SFA or PWG. If Junior clubs want it in the East then join the EoS. All agreed gap in the West, SFA will help establish a WoSFL. SJFA so far apart from the rest that there were no discussion as to when the PWG will next meet. If this an accurate summary, and I have no reason to doubt the source, then the SJFA continue as is and if clubs want to join the Pyramid you join the EoS or a new WoS. Looks like an exerice in job preservation.

  19. Aero signing on means so much. Heartstopping moments in defence, 100% penalty conversion, epic dickshots, Van Basten-esque goals, heart on the sleeve, GIRFUY celebrations in front of the North Stand even if it contains about 15 Ayr fans and always that tiny wee glimmer of hope that he breaks out the Aero-Smash trademark headbutt. What a fucking box office signing. Touted by big time outfits like Carlisle but decides to keep his captains armband. SUM FUCKING BOI.

  20. Dundee safe in the Premiership with a game to play, you say? Dundee could lose 14-0 tomorrow, it would make f**k all difference to our final league position and we’d be actually happy about it, you say? United are stuck in a f**ker of a Championship next season, you say?

  23. But it's a national cup none of them can win. The dream is only to add to the purse. Again, look down south - everyone enters two national cups. I followed Southport in the Northern Premier and Conference for a few years - the FA Trophy was a huge date on the calendar, just as I'm sure the FA Vase is for the smaller sides. Port's FA Trophy final at Wembley was a momentous occasion. I really think a combined non-league national cup could be a winner - actual competition from the North for starters. The South Regional Challenge Cup covers all the LL / EoS / SoS sides already - you only need to find space in the Highland fixture list for the games. I would be staggered if there is not a national cup for all once the pyramid is fully up and running (ie with the Juniors on board in whatever capacity).

  30. Steve Clarke wants to finish the season with a victory to send the Kilmarnock fans home happy for the summer. Killie end a remarkable campaign against Hearts at Rugby Park, aiming to secure a victory which would see them beat their record points total (57) during the three points for a win era. Killie's revival has seen the team earn a top six place for the first time since 2010/11 with fifth spot already secured this term. Now he wants the supporters to enjoy the last game of the campaign, saying: "When I came in originally, I thought we'd be involved in a relegation fight at this point, so to be where were are, to be competitive with all the teams in the top six has been great. "But the players deserve all the plaudits. Maybe I'm the one who sits up here getting all the praise because I spend more time in front of the media. "But the players deserve the credit as they have been fantastic. Hopefully on Sunday we can give the Kilmarnock fans a good finish to the season." The Killie boss shrugged off comments from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who commented on our tactical approach "If you look at the majority of what Brendan said, it was correct and proper – but that (firefighter) line wasn't really befitting of a Celtic manager. "It wasn't so much disrespectful, it was just a silly line to use in what was quite an honest post-match analysis of the game. "We don't have to go there and play the way Celtic want us to. "We went there to play the way that is best for us to get a result. It's my job as a manager to set my players up in a way that gives us the best chance of getting a positive result and that's what we did. "If you are the team with 73 per cent of the possession then it's what you do with it that counts and on the night Celtic didn't do enough. They only had one shot on target, which for that amount of possession I'd think would be disappointing for Brendan and his team. "If he wants to insinuate that Celtic could not have broken down 11 amateur players, which is what he was insinuating, then I think he underestimates his own abilities as a coach and the ability of his players because I'm pretty sure Celtic would beat 11 firemen. "I didn't see Brendan after the game, we didn't have the usual post-match chat so I don't know if he was frustrated or not after the results we've had against them this year. I don't think he should be too frustrated seeing as they have two trophies in the bag already and the chance to make it three next week."

  34. Those telling him to make his decision right now need to get real. He will consider whatever jobs he is interested in that come his way, as any intelligent guy would, and he has every right to do so. He's been courted by Dundee and Barnsley and not been tempted, so there's no hard and fast guarantee that he will leave this summer. I accept that the likelihood is that he will probably be off, but I personally will not be as gutted as I would have been either last summer or when Barnsley came in for him because he has left us something tangible - a place in the Premiership. It's ours to hold onto, and with a forward thinking board and chairman, I think we can go from strength to strength, albeit I would prefer that to be with Jack in charge. We're on our way to fan ownership, have a fanbase which has rediscovered it's love for the club in many, many cases, and the future can be as bright as we make it. We should revel in the optimism while we can...

  35. A few weeks ago, this was a terrible east fife team, underachieving, with no heart and poor playing style, now we are bemoaning the same players leaving the club....... I have no issue with the current squad numbers. Typically the 'bigger' players in the lower leagues get signed up early, happens every year as bigger budget teams can cherry pick the talent on lower wages, and guys that have been playing lower level in comparison to their ability try to push on. Outside Duggan, i would argue none of our players are big fish, and i am led to believe the Duggan to Raith move has been on the cards for a while. The boy wants FT football, fair play to him, and thanks for the effort this year. For us, its always been making use of the loan system (SPL/Champ level teams will be in pre-season before they start loaning boys out) and signing up boys that will suit the system. The football seasons not even finished yet, i wouldn't expect us to have a signed squad (nowhere even near), some teams are still deciding if they will keep their manager next year, never mind who will be playing upfront. Given young didn't really get the chance to mould the squad last year, i half expected wholesale changes, and we are getting them. I say fair enough. If we are sitting at the end of June, without a squad i would be concerned. But this is east fife, not barca. Contract talks dont take weeks/months with agents pushing agendas. You ask the player if they fancy it, aye or no- perfect sign or move on. The squad will assemble pretty quickly, it is only the start of May!! For boys saying they wont renew the season ticket because we dont have big signing targets, or the board hasnt set the sky high targets for the next few years... calm doon. Its local scottish football, you go along because its your team, its a day out with the mates, and it gets the weekly frustrations out. I would argue with the social media links, school links etc the current board are doing as much as i would realistically expect them to do, and with the artificial pitch, community engagement is at its highest. For those that just like whinging as a hobby, sea air will be good for you, get a season ticket

  38. Hope for your sake you keep shankland. As a Rovers fan I wanted to hate him but couldn't. When he started pointing and laughing at a foaming mess of a man abusing him when you were 3 (going 10) up on our second trip to Ayr, I chuckled. Also the fact that he's the best player by a country mile, you have to admire him. Still say he should have walked for his off the ball incident but admire how much of a sneaky b*****d he was when doing it. And to top it all off, the clip of him cutting about a pub in his trackies while the whole place sings the 'everybody loves Lawrence Shankland' song made me like him even more. Definitely on a par with Jack Bauer now on my man crush list.

  39. If we had a DVD of our five years in the SPL, you'd have the Hearts match and not much else. No wins over the Old firm, no Metz, no Hampden or anything from the cups. Steve Clarke has given Killie fans more memories in months than Archie given us in the last five years. If these are glory years, God help us. We haven't done anything Hamilton hasn't achieved over the piece. We've had Archie in/out debates every season because it's largely been a slog under him with a few wee good bursts here and there. The football has been consistently dreadful now for over a year and Archie will leave little legacy in terms a squad for the next manager. His legacy might be to leave us in a worst place than he found us in.
