But that's not what he said, the direct quote from this particular article is
"I've had to bring in kids who in my eyes weren't good enough to play"
Not play regularly or in a sustained run but at all. And it isn't the first time he's said it.
And he wasn't at any point being asked to rely on them for first team, he was effectively being asked to use them as fill ins and subs when the squad was stretched. Something they were more than capable of in spite of his lack of confidence in them. At the end of the day, short on numbers as the squad was, how many of the 19's squad actually started a game?
Ian McShane started at Partick Thistle both in March and April and the penultimate game at Raith Rovers.
James McGowan started the Ross County and Raith Rovers games in the last fortnight.
Steven Black started against Ross County at Stirling too.
Steven Degnan started at home to Morton in April.
Dan Orsi started the home game against Dunfermline in February, that Thistle away game in March and then the two games against Stirling in the same month before he was injured.
So Orsi started 4, McShane started 3, McGowan 2, and Black and Degnan 1 each. 11 starts in total, at least four of which in the last fortnight were only given when games were meaningless. And some of them he gave them by choice too. McLaren and Carmichael sat on the bench perfectly fit at Thistle whilst Orsi and McShane started.
He was hardly having one hand tied behind his back and having to play kids who "aren't good enough" every week. 11 starts out of a possible 495 (and at least two of Orsi's were on merit) and only twice did he start two of them in the same game, one of those the aforementioned Thistle match where he did it by free choice. The other when injuries and suspensions meant both Black and McGowan started at Stirling against County. Had the floodlight failure not occurred he might not have had to do that either.
