    • Reaalised at game tonigh that I haven't done a match report since my return. I know its a cup and nit the keague but can't be bothered starting a new thread for a couple of games. Haig Gordon Cup Semi-Final at Castle Cary Park on the outskirts of Creetown just across the road for that nice cheaper than everywhere else fueling point. Creetown 1-1 Dalbeattie Star aet. Creetown won 4-2 on penalties and have a local Derby agnst Newton Stewart at St.Mary's I believe, yesss, to look forward too. From the off Creetown were on the front foot pushing Star back, but not really creating much to get excited about. I think I have seen Creetown more than any team this season and their style of play is pleasing to me. They try and play out from the back bringing into play both full backs, which results in the midfield and forwards looking for balls into feet or creating space to receive passes.  Unfortunately a lot of the play was rushed and forced. This style if play cries out for someone to orchestrate the play and calm it all down a bit. But nobody, not even the Ferry Modric was apparently able to put their foot on the ball and control the play. I haven't seen Star since Sept and must be honest they were a massive disappointment;  not once I the entirety of the game did they even attempt to play football. It was very much route one with every punt from keeper or defender aimlessly tossed into Creetown's half. Which after witnessing some excellent play earlier in the season was hugely dispiriting. It was inevitable that Star would take the lead and almost as inevitable it would come from a set-piece, a corner. One of my pet hates is when a keeper bellows out 'keepers', and then doesn't come out aggressively to take control. The inevitable result was a Star defender easily scoring unchallenged and with no physical intimidation from the keeper, any keepers I coached will be nodding in agreement at this. When a keeper comes out there are no prisoners, I expect to see bodies in his wake from both teams. The Ferry became more of a goal threat for the rest of the half and had a few good chances that were squandered by poor decision making by any in yellow Star in lead at half-time. The 2nd half started began bizarrely with, and I checked with fellow customers, Star playing the entirety of this half with 5 defenders across the back. Not a word of a lie 5 defenders. It been to look like either Star would hold out or sneak a 2nd goal. Creetown hit the woodwork, defenders but mainly the River Cree behind the goal they've re attacking. The poor traffic on the 75 must have thought they were under attack from an 80's video game. When all looked lost a corner, what else, resulted in a standing not jumping Josh Rennie heading on the equaliser. To be fair it was a decent header. The game reached 90+ mins without much else happening. Can't recall too much occurring in extra-time but it was way past my bedtime so I was yawning a lot and rub inh my tired eyes. What I do remember is a Star definitely being the more assertive side and played more football in this 30min period than in the previous 90+. They did create a myriad of chances. The most memorable was after my fave player Potts was played through by a beautiful pass from the Ferry Modric, it was a defence splitting pass just unfortunate it was his own defence, and lifted it so far over the bar it probably reached Ayrshire before it hit terra firma. This boy has oodles of talent but every time I have watched him play he frustrates the life out of me with his attitude. So the tie inexorably meandered its way to penalties; all 4 of Creetown's takers held their nerve and dispatched their penalties calmly and with some aplomb it must be said. Star's first kick was saved, wasn't a bad pen but was a comfortable enough stop by 'chunk' I heard the Creetown stopper referred to. The next 2 pens were taken calmly, in fact so was the 3rd of this triumvirate. But unfortunately it hit the inside of the keeps right hand post and careered across the goalmouth but did not cross the white line. So I have a wee final to look forward to at, so I have been informed St.Mary's not 10 mins from my front door. A match up between 2 reams I have enjoyed watching this season.  The River Cree's very own Creetown F.C. and near neighbours the Creesiders otherwise known as Newton Stewart F.C. For reference Ferry's Modric is the Creetown no.8 whose name I should know but can never remember and cannot be bothered looking it up again for the gazillionth time. It is now way, way past my bedtime and I'm too tired to reply to the posts in the West Premier thread tonight so will get to them tomorrow at some point. #south/football/is/fun.
    • Just finished watching . Great interview guys and what a great person. Well done
    • Wikipedia has got them both going out to Zaragoza in consecutive rounds. Are you saying that the QF draw was made before the last 16 was played, such that a Hearts win over Zaragoza would have mean they’d have played Dunfermline?
    • iirc Brora are a lot more keen these days
    • So like a Vale, just not 30 yards away then. Look at the Hearts stats, expected to concede 12, actually conceded 1. Us, roughly the same xG and concede 13. St Johnstone better off by 7 from their xG too (the Considine factor?). Good stats there @RandomGuy. are they from the official SPFL site? It highlights how we're toothless with attacking set pieces and chronic at defending them. As both usually have 2 central defenders as a target/primary disruptor it further emphasises how this defence needs collectively woodshedded.
