SPL Bet Tips Week 18

Not the best of starts to this column last week with only Rangers and Celtic obliging for us (the shortest priced selections) so we’ve been to the bank, borrowed some more money, and are ready to try again! All of this week’s matches take place on Saturday afternoon and although it looks another tough fixture list there still looks room to make a profit from this week’s games.

Narrow wins for Rangers and Celtic last week meant it is as you were at the top of the SPL whilst at the other end of the table Inverness flew up the table after a great win at St Mirren, a result that cost St Mirren one place. There should be some good bets to be had on another competitive fixture list.

The early game on Saturday will see Rangers travel to Hibs and Rangers are obviously the hot favourites at 1/2 here. Rangers are in good form with thirteen points gained from their last six games, a great haul compared to Hibernian’s five points in the same time. Hibs have only lost two of their last six at home but that record is padded out by three draws. Those draws were against worse teams than Rangers though so 1/2 is more than fair on the away side who have won five from their last six on the road.

That means Celtic will feel the pressure for their game at home to Hearts. Celtic have won six out of eight at home and will be confident of justifying their odds of 1/3 against a team who have won just once away from home all season. The Old Firm look set for three points each this weekend and although they aren’t really worth backing as singles the odds of almost evens on the double looks okay.

Aberdeen will be hoping to make it three losses in a row for St Mirren and their home form has been the best outside the top two over the last six matches with three wins, a draw and two losses. St Mirren aren’t bad away from home, in fact there is little between their home and away form, but three away losses from six means Aberdeen should be backed at the 13/10 available at the time of writing.

Inverness will be hoping to build on last week’s win against St Mirren and they have a tough home game against Dundee Utd who went down narrowly to Celtic last week. Dundee Utd have drawn more often than any other results recently on the road (three from six) whilst the draw has been as common at home result as any other for Inverness over the last six matches so back the Draw here at 12/5.

That leaves games between Dunfermline and Kilmarnock and also St Johnstone and Motherwell on Saturday. In Dunfermline v Kilmarnock, the bookies makes Kilmarnock the 11/8 favourites which is no surprise with Dunfermline at the bottom of the form table with four points from their last six matches. Dunfermline have not even won at home this season and although Kilmarnock are not great away from home, they have only lost twice in six away matches and should just edge this one.

As for St Johnstone v Motherwell, the bookies reckon this is one of the toughest games to call this weekend which is no surprise with both teams taking eleven points from their last six matches. St Johnstone are in good form at home but Motherwell have the joint best away form on offer so this match should simply be left alone for betting purposes this week.
