SPL Bet Tips Week 17

Two games without a goal or a win for Rangers have thrown the SPL wide open once again with Celtic now just four points behind in the title race following their fourth win in a row last week. Meanwhile at the other end of the table there are just two points separating four teams and it is anyone’s guess which teams will be going down this season. This week’s six fixtures should throw up some interesting bets, here are our thoughts:

The Friday night match this week sees Hibernian travel to Motherwell. Motherwell are flying high this season in third place and they have gained twice as many points as struggling Hibs already. It is therefore a little surprising to see Motherwell available at 5/6 when playing at home, especially as Motherwell are also in much better form with eleven points from six games compared to Hibs’ five points from six games. Motherwell look good value here despite a slightly worrying home record that has seen them win just three of their eight matches at Fir Park this season.

St Johnstone are enjoying life in fourth place this season and they have a game in hand and one point to spare over Saturday’s opponents Hearts. The bookies look unsure about the outcome here, Hearts have one of the best home records in the league and are evens with most bookies whilst St Johnstone have one of the best away records currently and are 11/4 to win this. St Johnstone have mostly drawn away from home though so it wouldn’t have taken much for their away record to read much worse and with every Hearts home game ending in either victory or defeat it should pay to back the home side.

In yet another evenly balanced game on Saturday, Kilmarnock host Aberdeen and it will be an opportunity for the away side to put some daylight between themselves and bottom place. Aberdeen haven’t been in bad form recently with two wins and a draw from six games which is just two less points than Kilmarnock have earned in that time. Aberdeen have a very poor away record with just two points earned on the road but it has improved recently with two draws and two narrow defeats at Celtic and Motherwell. That recent form should be enough to get a draw at odds of 12/5 at the time of writing.

Rangers desperately need a return to form and they have a great opportunity this week with a home tie against Dunfermline who are just two points off bottom. Dunfermline don’t have a bad away record but they have lost half their away matches and against a team who are yet to lose at home, it’s difficult not to go for the home side who can be backed at just 2/11.

The league’s bottom club Inverness travel to mid table St Mirren on Saturday and the home side should be good value considering Inverness have lost six out of eight away matches this season. The odds of 11/10 on St Mirren, a team who have only lost three times at home this season, look pretty fair.

Finally the live match on Sunday will be Dundee Utd v Celtic and presuming Rangers have picked up three points this will be seen as a must win game for Celtic who can be backed at 8/13 to win their fifth game on the trot. Dundee Utd have been fairly poor at home recently, losing three of their last six games at Tannadice Park so 8/13 should prove a decent bet on Celtic.
