It won't happen again. We have came close twice but I can't see it happening ever again.

We will still have the claim to fame that we (Aberdeen) were the last Scottish team to win a trophy in europe!

We've had four Euro finalists in the last 25 years - pretty good going for a tiny wee nation. Can Austria say the same for example?

I think it will happen again in my lifetime.

A UEFA cup win within 15 years.

I guided Morton to a UEFA cup final in my final season in the hotseat, unfortunately we were horsed by Monaco and I was promptly sacked. sad.gif Or do you mean in real life?

A UEFA Cup win certainly isn't out of reach - both halves of the Old Firm have reached the final in 5 years (an awful, awful Rangers side, yet we still made it). But the Champions League is completely different - we can't compete finanically, with the ridiculous amounts of money being spent in Engerland and so have to rely on a 'lucky' season where we get kind draws, lucky bounces and our best players aren't sold. But with the money being spent, something has to give and it's surely only a matter of time until some clubs go bust in Engurland and spending is cut down. So is it impossible? No, but the CL at least won't be a possible for a long time yet.

Celtic and to a lesser extent Rangers have turnover higher than many clubs who do better than them in the CL. Sure, they're always going to be a long way off the big boys but if the likes of Porto, Valencia, Leverkusen and Monaco can reach the final, then it's not just about finances.

Scotlands record in the Euro club tourneys is vastly more impressive than a lot of nations who are far larger and have far more resources - eg Belgium, the Scandanavian sides, many of the Eastern Euro nations. A more accurate comparison should really be against the likes of the Welsh and Irish and when you do that you realise actually how well we have been doing.

laugh.gif The Welsh teams can't even get into Europe can they? Since they play in Engerland?

I think Queens are three or four seasons away from winning the Champions League.

I'm optimisitic enough to believe it will happen in my lifetime, but it will only come about if any or all of the following happen first:

  • The cash crisis finally hits football hard and the likes of Sky and Setanta can't afford to pay the ridiculous amounts of money they've been paying for English football. Thereby the days of spending ludicrous sums and wages on mediocre players becomes a thing of the past (It will happen wink.gif )
  • The Champions League stops being a contradiction in terms and actually caters for the Champions of each respective country. Having second, third and fourth place teams makes a mockery of the name.
  • UEFA stop whoring themselves to sponsors to allow said second, third and fourth place teams into the competition and any prize money can be more evenly shared.
  • More teams turn to homegrown talent and guys who feel pride in playing for their club, instead of overpaid, mediocre foreign mercenaries more worried if their wages at the end of the week will pay for that Ferrari to update the one they bought only last week.
  • Michel Platini - that is all
That's my tuppence worth biggrin.gif

Very good points, basically what I was trying to say but failed laugh.gif The most important I think is to initiate a rule where each club must have at least 6 homegrown players playing for them, and only the winners of each league are allowed into the CHAMPIONS League - this will also increase the value of the UEFA Cup. 4th placed teams getting into the CL is ridiculous anyway.
