Bo'ness 1-3 Bonnyrigg
It was quite hard to be sure, but I thought Bo'ness looked better today than they have for a few weeks, suggesting this could have been a corker of a game. Unfortunately the referee completely ruined the game, sending off a Bonnyrigg player (no.3 I think) after about five minutes for what was presumably some sort of dissent. After roughly half an hour Mitchell was sent off for Bo'ness, booked twice in ten seconds for dissent after having been fouled (not given) on the edge of the box. Five minutes later Muir put in a fine tackle in the middle of the park, was penalised and then given a straight red card for...yep, you've guessed it. Only nineteen men left on the park at half time and there hadn't been a bad tackle.
Caine was also sent off (straight red) for Bo'ness in stoppage time for a tackle I didn't really see, so I'll give the referee the benefit of the doubt.

Interesting that it took him ninety-odd minutes to start protecting the players rather than his own thin skin. Having already issued the red cards mentioned above, on around the hour mark he failed to even talk to, far less book, a Bonnyrigg player who brutally upended a Bo'ness player as he charged in on goal.
I'd tell you about the goals but, y'know, the referee wanted the game to be all about him to I might as well tell it that way.
I know there's two sides to it, and that players should be more disciplined and respectful to officials. I can't abide stupid players, and Bo'ness should have had the benefit of learning from the Bonnyrigg left back's early mistake. But to my mind the referee's job should be more about protecting players than protecting his wee ears from naughty words said in the heat of the moment.
Still, on the bright side, any Auchinleck scouts who've been to Newtown Park the last couple of weekends won't have much of value to report back. "Well boss, I can tell you what they look like with nine men..."
