I am not aware of Dundee and Dundee United ever having played games at home at the same time.
Surely with the drop in attendances in the last couple of decades, and the decline in trouble being caused ,taysides finest could quite easily cope with four sets of fans.
When you take into account as mentioned on another thread, if it's Dundee vs Saints and Dundee Utd vs Hamilton, any police that may have had to have been at Mcdiarmid would be spare and Hamilton dont exactly travel in large numbers.
Say for instance there would be 8-85,00 at tannadice and around 4-5 k at dens it's not exactly a huge number.
Yes each game would have to be weighed up on it's merits but an afternoon like that would be very memorable. Every time i have been to Dundee, bar the odd minor scuffle between toddlers, there has always been healthy banter.
Am i being a fool to think this would not end up in a full scale riot?

The police would never sanction it imo.
The rivalry is, in the main, friendly but it only takes a couple of pissed-up half-wits and it's all over the papers. Neither club needs the adverse publicity.
It's not that much of an issue to rearrange fixtures.
I remember many many many many many moons ago there being two cup ties on the same day with the kick offs staggered by about an hour.
Didnt United beat Hearts 6-5 or something??? Cant remember what the Dundee game was.
Dont think there was a load of trouble in an era more used to it but in todays ridiculous Health & Safety age a repeat will never be allowed.

I know its not an issue to change fixtures, but it would be so much better for all the fans to feel part of a bigger crowd, almost to create a buzz. And if the Dens or tannadice was making more noise it would add to the atmosphere, which is sadlly IMHO lacking from modern day football.

We played Killie in the Scottish Cup at Dens around 1990 at 1pm, with United kicking off at Tannadice at 3pm.
I don't think the current arrangement is too much of a disruption. And in any case, I doubt Dundee would want to play at home with United playing across the road at the same time. The current difference in fortunes could see a few punters walk in through the wrong turnstile.

Unfortunately, it will never happen. I'm sorry to be such a naysayer but there WOULD be trouble. Football fans are fucking idiots.

A quick Google shows it was Sat 23 Feb 1991 -
United 2 Airdrie 0
Dundee 2 Killie 0
Not quite a 6-5 game anway!

Between the two games i mentioned earlier they would be lucky to get 15,000 total nowadays.
Surely thats not too hard to cope with and is not so much different from a sell out at tannadice alone?

It's a shame there had to be two teams in Dundee. Not saying there's anything wrong with either team and there's no way anyone would want to merge them now but had there only been one team they could be massive.
Oh well.

In terms of support (if there had only ever been 1 senior Dundee based club), I don't think there would be much difference from United now, and Dundee a few years back. Can't be arsed presenting any rationale, it's just my gut feeling.
As for the idea, there's too much for police in Dundee to deal with on a Saturday in general without an additional 5k-10k people at the fitba.

If I remember correctly United played Airdrie that day and the Killie casuals, at full-time, met the Airdrie casuals, at half-time, for a ruck.

It would not be feesable and if it was the police would never allow Dundee and United to play on the same day, even if the times were staggered. Parking and traffic congestion would occur and the police would have to cope with four sets of fans, when they should really be out on the beat in the city, it would be an uneccessary amount of police being used for a football match, or two, when they really should be sending their resources out on the beat, protecting the ordinary public.

I know its not the point but its highly unlikely that there would. Dundee and Lochee fans would unite together and maul abdy.

I'm kinda remembering Dees v Partick at 1.00/2.00 and Utd at home at 3.00 in the Scottish Cup - maybe about early 90's (also maybe on a Sunday although I may have just made that last bit up). No way would Tayside's finest allow this to happen these days.

Just as well too, what with Lochee being such a hotbed of Popery. If hordes of rampant Derry Boys should stumble across a group of Lochee United fans taking communion or something after a game I'd imagine the resulting carnage would be so severe as to require the peacekeeping services of at least one of Her Majesty's armed forces, never mind Tayside Police.
