No big surprises in the squad, but I agree about McCormack. He's doing well in the Championship with Cardiff and deserves his chance.

He was in the last squad as well....but you do have a point.

The defence and forward line are worryingly weak. I think McCormack is injured, must be along for the "team bonding".

I've still no idea what Burley/the SFA are looking to achieve with this fixture.

I totally agree but await the PnB baclash. Its shows the Burley has no backbone. If he had called him up it would have made Boyd look stupid and correct me if I'm wrong but Boyd cannot knock back a call up

Now I like Davie Clarkson, he's a decent football player and a damn fine bloke, but how the feck is he in this squad again?
His performances for us this season have little to be desired.
Burley love child perhaps?

Only thing that struck me about this squad is, how are we possibly going to use 9 defenders huh.gif

I can't believe that clown Iwelumo has been picked again. I was hoping he would be another "one cap wonder".

Our best player against Norway.

His performance was one of the only positives against Norway, and we were only a threat after he came on.

One poor miss doesn't make him a poor player. He's more deserving of a spot than out of form David Clarkson.

He won a couple of headers off route one balls. What else did he do that was so positive ? Even taking his miss out of the equation ( which being the crucial moment of the game and the very thing that you have strikers in the field to do ie score ) I honestly cant remember him contributing that much. If we are down to playing hoofball fair enough, but Burley is trying to claim that he will bring attractive attacking football to us.

I wonder if the "Boyd Rule" applies to goalkeeper too rolleyes.gif
Dunning1874
With Gordon struggling to make it, we're probably going to be stuck with McGregor in goal. Where the hell did anyone get the idea that he's better than Neil Alexander?

Morrison has been anonymous every time he's played for Scotland, he should be out the starting eleven at the very least.

Good to see McCormack get his chance. Even if he's injured and even if this was a competitive game, I'd still take him over McFadden right now.

He atleast offered something different to the other strikers on show. Basically the ball was sticking upfront, with him as the focal point, whereas McFadden was running down blind alleys for the majority of his time on the pitch.

I'm not saying he was great or anything, but he offered more than Steven Fletcher, McFadden, and Morrison, who were all on in attacking positions.

He deserves another chance. He is a decent target man and what happened on his debut was just horrible. I hope he can make amends.

A chance to play against high quality opposition instead of the usual friendlies against the likes of Austria and Denmark.

Our next game is against similarly talented opponents in Holland, so this game allows us to prepare for that one.

I think the team will be:

-------------------Gordon---------------------

Hutton-----Caldwell-------McManus----Naysmith

Fletcher-----Brown------Ferguson-------Robson

-------------------Morrison--------------------

------------------McFadden-------------------

Hutton, Ferguson and Gordon will all go off at half-time to be replaced by Broadfoot, Hartley and McGregor.

I really think Garry O'Connor would be a more sensible choice than David Clarkson. And given that David Weir started the last game, a world cup qualifier at that, why is he not in the squad?

Correct me if i'm wrong but didnt Roy Keane say Craig Gordon would not be fit for another few weeks?

I don`t see how this game allows us to prepare for the game in Holland when you consider there is a 3 month gap between this fixture and the one in the Dam.Friendly date in February would have been the ideal time to play a game in preparation for Holland the following month but no,we`ve decided to hold a players get together. This is probably down to the SFA dragging their heels in arranging anything and when they have decided to try and arrange a friendly the more attractive opposition are fixed up and only the dregs are left. Were still waiting on a confirmed date for the Norway game yet they have been in discussion for the last couple of months
Gypsy till I die
Going by Burley reason's for not playing Boyd, surely Ferguson can't be picked on the basis he hasn't kicked a ball in 4 months. Or in Burley's eyes is this still playing regular football rolleyes.gif

Yip, the Argies must be shiting themselves at the thought of Iwelumo and Clarkston up front. Suprised
Simon Donnelly didn't get a recall as well.

They wouldn't be shitting it at any of our strikers. Which player, instead of Iwelumo(that is not in the squad), would scare Argentina?

What's Donnelly got to do with anything? Just because I'm a Thistle fan, doesn't mean my point is any less relevant.

Why the f**k is Alexander still in the squad for, the guy is 36 (or older), we know what he can do and he aint got too much to offer. We would be far better placed getting a youngster in there to get some experience within the squad. I know Alexander is only back up to Hutton but surely we have far better options than that.

We are clearly weak in several areas. I'd much rather a friendly against Austria or Denmark which would be an opportunity to blood several new players/try new tactics. If Iwelumo had actually played in front of an expectant Hampden crowd prior to being thrown in at the deep end perhaps he wouldn't have had his rush of blood and fluffed that chance.

Our achievements in the last campaign were built on a basis of confidence and momentum, with a good bit of blood, guts and snotters thrown in for good measure. A humping from the Argies is just going to lower the confidence even more (if that is indeed possible). We don't have any sort of momentum at the moment after an inconsistent start, results wise, and I haven't seen anything so far to suggest the players are willing to fight for Burley the way they did for Smith and McLeish.

If things aren't working you want to get back to basics and try to rebuild. A glamour friendly (I love this term, because I can't think of many more things less glamorous than a midweek pumping from an under-strength Argentina, at a no doubt wet Hampden), is not going to achieve anything.
shedboy4life
Hopefully not Davie Weir or Alexander! Too slow to keep up with tevez and aguero (or any other half decent striker)

Wouldnt mind seeing maloney starting in place of miller smile.gif

I didn't hear him saying it, but given that Gordon was still out today I suppose he won't be fit for Wednesday.

That means McGregor will be starting unfortunately. Hopefully he keeps the blunders to a minimum.

Cant argue with anything in that. It is clearly a fund raising exercise for the SFA and one which will have been aided by Maradona coming in. Lets hope the money is spent wisely......

According to Beeb website he is defo out as is Steven Fletcher and Kenny Miller. At this rate we will have less up front than Kate Moss.

Not much chance of that team then.

Barring any more call-offs between now and Wednesday, I think he'll go for

Hutton------Caldwell-------McManus----Naysmith

Brown-------Hartley------Ferguson-------Robson

------------------McFadden--------------------
