Hey guys,
before i buy this/download it. I was wanting to know is it the best football manager there is and if the updates are good etc etc. I was also wondering if the seasons go through quicker than in recent Management games?
Cheers,

Not played this game in years

I think I skipped a week of school after it came out

I assume if I was to install it that it would run in compatibility mode?
I loved it that much I actually bought it for PC and Xbox

That must've been about 1993 or so? I've still got my Amiga 600 and the game somewhere, although it's not seen the light of day for well over a decade

Where abouts can you download it from? I used to have it loved it but sold it for a couple of quid before I left the UK. D'oh! It is a million times better than than the more modern releases and with the data updates it would be brilliant.

Stangely, I began playing this again at the weekend.
So simplistic, so fun, and I can run every league on full database quicker than FM2008 runs 5 leagues.

I love this one. They've over complicated them now, in my opinion. At the start of the game, you want to sign a Portuguese striker called To Madiera. The guy is awesome.
I'm now at season 2021/2022 now after 12 SPL titles with both Rangers and Celtic and two English Premierships with Middlesbrough. I'll get the Scotland job one day

I'm familiar with To Madeira, he was the staple signing of any team I ever went but so was Taribo West on a free.
Madeira once scored over 80 goals for me in a season, ridiculous. It was cheating though as he wasn't real!

Taribo West and Kiko were both staple signings at the beginning of the season. There's one other big name on a free, but I can't remember who.
Also, signing Mark Kerr and Lee Miller straight away was standard practice.

There was a good left sided midfielder called Roberto Palacios that cost you buck-shee as well, to start you. Plus an Egyptian defensive midfielder Ibrahim Said, who cost me £1.2 million from Al-Ahly
Good keepers are Dionsis Chiotis from AEK Athens (£400,000) and Hugo Pinheiro from another small Portuguese side (£100,000 should cover it)
I used to sign Kiko and Pep Guardiola and just sell them both for ridiculous profit, although occasionally I would keep Guardiola.
You could do the same with a Swedish winger called Sttefan Selakovic, only ever cost a million but his value would skyrocket when you signed him and again you could make good profit.
It was so easy to make money in the game, when you were selling folk if you asked the buying team to exchange your dud for one of their star players they would bump up the price almost in fear of losing one of their own gems.
What a game, so simplistic, but what's wrong with that?
Another absolute gem of a player was Tommy Smith of Watford. Stats-wise didn't look great but boy did he score goals.

Guardiola's the man I had in mind. Mascherano was in my head for some reason. I used to like having a young team, so I would generally do the same with Kiko, West and Guardiola, and make a big profit.
All the Swedish guys were great that game. Kallstrom, Kennedy Bakircioglu, Ibrahimovic, and also Selakovic.
Used to just sit Ibrahim Said in front of my back two (lone gunman formation - a glorified 2-7-1 system) and he worked wonders.
Arjen Robben and Julius Aghahowa were also staple buys although you couldnt't get them b oth at the start for various reasons.

Steven Reid from Millwall at the start of the game. Cost you around £2-£2.5 million and could play anywhere. Scored a lot of goals from midfield

Tommy Smith was dynamite.
Also Mike Duff, Hakan Mild, Karl Cornellison, Teddy Luccic and Kim Kallstrom were signing's I would make. Get them along with Kerr and West in the Championship and the title was yours. Also remember Mark Hughes regen always being at Alferton Town after the first season, always a good signing.
Had a game last year with Wimbeldon, was class.
I'd love to resume playing this but my PC is riddled since my Dad started downloading about 20 albums a day on it, it just restarts all the time and I think that would get frustrating when I'm trying to lead the Warriors to World Domination.

God, this thread brings back memories!!!!
I think I shall be having a wee look for this later.
I remember I signed a guy from Hearts of Oak and I can't remember his name, but he scored 67 goals from midfield for me in one season

. I'm fairly sure I turned down an offer of about £20,000,000 from Real Madrid for him.
And the guys who said Said (

see what I did there), Kennedy Barikoglu (sp) and Ibrahimovic, I had all of them in an all conquering West Ham team. Happy days!
We should start a network game of this. Of course we'd have to make sure and all be online together at the start and let the signing frenzy begin

See when you install the updates, does it make your game start in August 2008 or does it keep it at 2001?
I know it's petty, but I think modern players in 2001 would annoy me.
Nah sadly it is 2001, don't really see how they could get around that to be fair.

All teams are updated (Annan etc), but nothing re competitions so no play-offs in SFL, no UEFA Cup group stage or no removal of the Champions' League 2nd Phase.

The updated version does delete the cheat players, and tigtens up the tactics of the AI as well, so it isn't as easy to cheat to win with attacking midfielders scoring 50 goals a season etc.
Still a great game though.

Awwwww, the 50+ goal a season finds were what made it entertaining!
I would imagine the joy at finding a player like that is what Christopher Columbus must have felt when he found America and it's natives that could be bought out for some shiny baubles.
And f**k the first person who mentions Admiral Cheng
