I can recall i think it was the first Airdrie United season we had a player come of the bench to make his debut scored almost immediatly then broke his leg and was stretchered off never to be seen again.

Stephen Mcauley i think his name was, not too sure just wondering if hes still in the game ?

Steve McAuley scored on his 2nd Airdrie United appearance then didn't appear again for 2 months before leaving so probably didn't break his leg. He eventually dropped into the Juniors though has been clubless for 2 years now. May well be playing amateur somewhere, not Junior though as as far as I know Rob Roy still have his registration.

I seem to recall Morten Peterson scoring a bullet header against Hibs. Shame it was an own goal. He also played against Celtic win they won the league 5-1 against us as well.

I think he played for us for about six months in the 2003/04 season when Kenny Brannigan was our manager, I'm sure he knew him from Airdrie.

Made 13 league starts and four sub appearances, scoring six times, as well as three cup starts and one sub appearance with one goal.

Think he had a disagreement with KB and was gone before the season ended.

As for worst debut, Glenn Millar for QP in January 1991. Came on as a sub in the second half, hadn't warmed up properly and the first run he made his hamstring went. Within 60 seconds he was being subbed without touching the ball.
Skyline Drifter
Couple of examples for Queens:

Pre-season match at Barrow, July 2004. Billy McDonald was trying to win a contract and came on as a Trialist substitute in 55 minutes. In the 56th minute Emilio Jaconelli struck the post with a shot from the edge of the box and the rebound fell for McDonald to volley in the opening goal. Unfortunately he ruptured his cruciate ligament on landing and had to be immediately substituted. He never kicked a football again so far as I know. Certainly didn't for us though he was given a "pay as you play" one year deal to try to recover.

1st October 2005, at Ross County in a league match Brian Reid went down injured in the 32nd minute just as John O'Neill gave us the lead. He couldn't continue so striker Gary Wood reverted to centre half and a Nigerian Trialist, Tope Arojogun, came on up front for a debut. In first half injury time he chased a ball into the far corner and pulled a hamstring, limping off having touched the ball just once after 12 minutes on the park. He was never seen again.

Away from Scotland for a moment. I'm sure many people will remember Johnathon Woodgate's spectacular debut for Real Madrid where he scored an own goal then got sent off.

I would also look to put a word in for Iwelumo's Scotland debut.

I'm sure there has been worse Scotland debuts in recent memory - Berti's one cap wonders would be a great starting point!
aldo_j
Not so much a debut, but during Tom hendries last couple of game at Saints we had an Austrian trialist centre half, Klaus Diethrich (maybe played for Hibs??), who got hooked at half time after we went 3 nil down. think he tried an overhead kick on the halfway line which he missed allowing the opposition to score. Probably beats Andy Dow et al as one of the worst players I have ever seen in a Saints shirt!

I seem to remember Willie Garner scored 2 O.G.s on his Celtic debut. Also did Souness not sign somene for Southampton who wasn't even a footballer and sub after 10mins or something like that.

laugh.gif The man, the legend.

He was before my time but I think i'm correct in saying that he never actually played for us. McLean binned him after seeing him in training. Wee Jim apparently signed him after a tip off from a scout down south for £200,000 laugh.gif

'Played' for Raith Rovers during 05/06. One competitive start I believe and sat on the bench for the rest of the year. His subsequent disappearance from professional football means Dalziel probably got this one right.

Not Irvine Meadow specifically but I do know there are a fair few clubs in the Juniors who pay silly money.

My thinking was that surely no one would be stupid enough to pay a massive amount for a player who has failed at all 3 of his senior clubs. I do understand he's doing ok over there though.

'Fair few' really is only 2 (Bathgate and Meadow). I'd be very surprised if there are any other players who are on a weekly basic of three figures at any other club. Certainly not at Pollok.

Everyone was booked apart from Alan Rough! I remember that as a trivia question from my childhood copy of Emlyn Hughes' Question of Football quizbook!
LLD
Livi midfielder Murray Davidson was sent off on his debut v Dundee and second appearance v Morton last season.

I don't think many other players can boast such an impressive record...
Ranaldo Bairn
Falkirk had a boy sent on as sub, and subbed off again 10 minutes later way back in the late 80's. Stewart, I think. Got to feel sorry for the guy.

Not so much worst debuts but we had a French lad signed by Eric Black just before we went into administration called David Ferrere. He was about 5ft 6inches tall and came on at half time in a match against Hibs at Fir Park. He immediately struck the bar with a free-kick from what looked about 40 yards. He went on to score a hat trick in this match with all three goals identical.

We also had a guy named Abel Thermous who came on as a sub about 3 years ago at Rugby Park and was sent off after 11 mins. Never to play for 'Well again if memory serves us right. This he came through the youth academy at Monaco or something. Another guy called Hervé Bacqué signed in similar circumstances having came through at Monaco and had played with Luton. He only made one sub appearance under Billy Davies against Dundee in 1999 and was quickly punted out for being shite!

We all thought we had a player on our hands but he turned out to be a bit shit to be honest!

During the Harri Kampman days at Fir Park we had a right couple of rotten players. I am sure there was a story about when Kampman left the 'Well board found alot of paperwork for players he had agreed to sign.

Alex McLeish also signed two Austrian lads by the names of Mario Dorner and Franz Reush back in the mid 90's. Both were supposedly signed up on 2 or 3 year deals but quickly disappeared as they were rank rotten. I might be wrong but I think Dorner went on to play with Darlington.

Edit- Found this link about the Austrian Lads- http://www.motherwellfc.co.uk/players/player.php?id=178
arab_joe
Surprised none of the Arabs mentioned Willo Floods debut- he was booked twice in the first 40 minutes for slipping/fouling a player then for avoiding a challenge- quite harsh, but amusing that about 90% of the ground must have thought (as I did...) "Jesus, what a terrible signing" when he has actually been superb.

Also, a number of United players made their debuts (I think, anyway) in Craig Brewsters last game- the 5-1 mauling from Falkirk (the away one, not the home one- Levein in charge by then I think). Someone else might know more.

That aside, I think Woodgates for Real Madrid is the best.
arab_joe
It turns out that Willo Flood was also sent off in his second game for United- a reserve team run out. He got his second booking for taking a free kick too quickly... Not a terribly good start, I'm glad things improved!!
McCaig's Tower
For the Pars two or three come to mind

Noel Whelan - clearly unfit and lasted 3 minutes in the first game of the 2006/07 season before limping off and never playing again. Last seen on Celebrity Masterchef.

Next is a player who often features in "Worst all time XIs" - I have a hazy recollection that he came on as a sub at Stranraer in about 1983, was sent off inside 10 minutes and never featured again - Derek Matthew, possibly? Perhaps someone could confirm or deny....

And then there was a player that we had on loan from Arsenal - with my keen eye for a player I immediately identified him as a total dumpling with no ball control and little discernible co-ordination - got punted back south with a "thanks, but no thanks" sticker attached. Tomas Danilevicius. Regular scorer in Serie B. Lithuania's all time leading international goal-scorer...

Derek Matthew made just one sub appearance in his senior career, for the Pars in Division 2 away to Stranraer on 8/10/83. He'd previously been on the books of Rangers and Raith Rovers.

Derek Mathews - one game as sub, signed from Raith Rovers. Never seen again in a Pars strip.

20 year-old goalkeeper Jim Brown made his debut for Killie, in for the injured Alan McCulloch, in a Premier Division league match at home to Rangers in September 1980, and Killie lost 8-1. I think Sandy Jardine scored from the half-way line that day. Killie lost 6-1 at home to St. Mirren two weeks later. His last game, nine in total, was a personal triumph for the young man, when he faced Rangers at Ibrox, 8 weeks after his debut and kept the score to 2-0 for the Gers.

Jim, was signed from Beith Juniors and went on to Ayr after Killie and then to the Medda.

Kirky_Clyde
Joe Cardle was sent off after 25 minutes of his Clyde debut.
wee-dude
if i remember correctly

aime koudou came on as a late sub for us against ross county ( round about the 80th minute )

and got sent off for squareing up to a ross county player in injury time

it's possible i could be wrong tho rolleyes.gif

It says more about Renwick that he played Robbie than it does about the big man's ability.

He'd signed for us in the summer of '07 having not played a 1st team game for 5 months and because he was so unfit he barely played in our starting lineup - he only made 7 competitive appearances. He then spent 2 months not even making the 16 before we released him so he could move to Berwick in January 08.

So when Renwick threw him into his own starting line-up for the Peterhead game, he'd not played a single match for 2 months and had only played 7 matches in the 8 months before that. He was anything but match fit. While I think Des McKeown is a prime candidate for Boaby of the Year, his column criticising Renwick was bang-on. He did sign for Berwick but they then opted not to register him with the SFA on the monday. Shameful stuff.

Robbie's dropped out of football now after failing to establish himself at Bo'ness United last season.

I do believe we may have a 'winner'.

However, I'd like to nominate Jules Tchimbakala an allegedly decent player who played at the African Nations in 2000 IIRC. Burst his hamstring in pre-season and broke his arm on his reserve team comeback. Never played a competitive game of football for us.
