think 6 million would be good business for celtic with their financial problems as they are, though it is cutting it fine to replace him. they will need all the defenders theyve got in the champions league, especially with johan mjallby retirin last season

Actually, Mjallby's playing in Spain. If Martin O'Neill wasn't so blind to any formation other than 3-5-2, then replacing BlowBlow Badly wouldn't be all that hard.

His contract is up at the end of this season

he needs to sign a further term otherwise we should look at Newcastle's offer.
However he'll sign

Celtic have to be the most inept club in Europe at getting players to extend contracts as they always leave it to into the last year of the contract. That's not a dig, its an undeniable fact. Any other 'big team' (probably including Rangers)would sort it with 2 years to go. What is it with Celtic and does this not worry Celtic fans that maybe the people runnning your club don't really get football but ARE interested in making money from their large support base.
NB the only other instance (apart from Celtic) like this i can think about is Spurs and Sol Campbell.

Liverpool & Steve McManaman
Then they got a low fee for Owen when they knew he wasnt signing a new contract as well.

I agree. Spurs could have sold Sol Campbell, Celtic should have sold Henrik Larsson, Rangers should have sold Brian Laudrup.
When the old firm teams are in such financial difficulty, they should negotiate with their top players with a year to run, and sell them if they refuse to sign. Which, let's be honest, is what happened with Owen.

But you can't force players to leave if they dont want to.
Larsson was due a huge payout from Celtic for seeing out his contract, he would have to get that much before leaving.
Spurs would never sell Sol Campbell to Arsenal. Campbell got a better deal because Arsenal didn't have to pay a fee.

I'm not sure it's as much as £100k. I had heard £80k. He did get a £8m signing on fee (& a few medals

)

Yeah, but they did want to. That's why they didn't want new contracts. Brian Laudrup behaved in the most honest manner out of those players by saying "you should sell me to Chelsea/Ajax". I'm sure Tottenham could have sold Campbell to someone other than Arsenal.
Incidentally, anyone remember the days when Sol Campbell was a striker?

He also has great speed, some of which i wish he could pass on to Hartson, who
was a bit slow in the Old firm encounter. But never sell Bobo for a weak price of
6 million, only start to listen at 10 Million.
