they used to play in yellow and red though - when did they last wear that?

Primrose and pink hoops last worn in 1948, I think Nothing to do with the lion rampant - they were the racing colours of the Earl of Rosebery, who was SFA president at the start of the 20th century.

Yellow and red are the royal colours. Blue and white are the national colours. Navy, white and red come from Queen's Park's original strip, though, nothing to do with the Scottish or union flags.
