Someone had to start this thread I suppose...

I don't see why he used his right foot. In the match thread there's a picture on the 5th page I think of him just as he hits the ball. If his foot is at that ridiculous angle of course he's going to miss. Why not just swing the left leg and it'll go in...
MarvMarvSuperMarv

True, although his body language and fact he was the only player that didn't have his head on his hands causes me concern. Any Scotland fan through and through would have looked a tad more distraught... feel I may open a can of worms on this one.

Score a Scotland goal and I'll forgive him though.

I would say quite good. Other than the miss, he had a good game, and only when we came on did we actually look threatening. If he had scored it, it would have ruined clydenewcomer's life.

Because he is probably racist and think he isn't scottish wink.gif

As for the miss, wow. I had jumped up celebrating as the ball from Naysmith had gone past the keeper, 2 Scotland forwards there, surely 1-0 right? When i saw no celebration i thought it was wrongly given offside (well, im biased) but when i saw he missed, i couldn't believe it. (and i apologise to my neighbours).

Oh well, never mind.

At least he won't get abuse on the street from any Scotland fan as we won't recognise him because they all look the same.

I'd hope he is as would anybody pulling on the blue jersey but sometimes I just fear the next of 'Robbie Stockdale and chums' is around the corner. Don't mean to jump on this bandwagon where you have to be 100% Scottish to play for Scotland (we all remember Don Hutchison after all and the wonderful job he did) but ever been in the horrible situation where you care more about a team than the players themselves? He just caused me concern about this but future games will tell.

He didn't want it to affect him too much, besides that I thought he done well holding up the ball and winning headers.

This is most certainly not the end for Iwelumo or Scotlands chance of qualifying.

Take out his miss and its a pretty decent debut. Held the ball up well and won headers. A good alternative to our existing front line.

The miss was an absolute shocker, but i still think Chris should've started the game.

The first half was awful. Absolutely no cutting edge up front. No creativity in midfield. McFadden is never a centre forward. He's far better playing alongside a target man, and the only real target man in the squad was Ilewumo.

It was only when he brought on Chris and Fletcher that we started to look reasonable going forward. There was more drive in the team.

Unfortunately for Chris - he will always be remembered for that miss... sad.gif

I felt sorry for him too... after the rage had died down! Other than that, he did have a decent game though and hope he can beat the critics. Everything I'm hearing on Sky regarding Scotland just now's starting with Chris Iwelumo misses a golden opportunity as Scotland... blah blah blah.

Does that make a difference? As I discovered 5 mins ago, born in Coatbridge, grown up in Scotland, does it matter at all if his parents are Nigerian? My mother was born in England which in this strange world technically makes me half English (hence half Scottish I'd imagine) and I wouldn't have any other allegiance other than Scotland.

QUOTE (djchapsticks @ Dec 2 2006, 09:48) *
What a fucking idiot you are.

I knew big Chewing Gum (easier to say than Iwelumo) well from his time with us. He is as Scottish sounding as I am. He was born, raised and schooled in Coatbridge, speaks with a broad West Coast accent and loves his country. His mum is Scottish, and his father a Nigerian who lives or lived here.

You, on the other hand aren't helping this country in general, with narrow minded, racist comments like the one you have come out with. Congrats on racially profiling a guy because of the way he looks, before you have ever even heard him open his mouth.

Fucking racist w**ker. mad.gif

Toby Fair
I feel terribly sorry for the guy - this is going to define his career you would imagine.

I have to say though that it was the worst miss I have ever, ever seen. Someone mentioned Ronnie Rosenthal on here and Van Vossen was mentioned on the TV. For my money though, their celebrated misses didn't come close - they were actually missable.
The only rival to today's that I can think of came in an Irish game I think, when a bloke in a red shirt ran through, past the 'keeper and still put it wide from very close - you know the one.
Today's though, in a World Cup game surpasses everyhing in terms of profile, siginificance and well... easiness. All the things people say - "My gran would have scored", "It was easier to score" etc. actually apply here.
At the time, I had to ask the guy I was with "what happened there?" because it simply wouldn't compute.
Afterwards, I kept watching it again on Sky Plus, convinced that he'd bundle it over the line one time.
It's noble of guys like Brown and Burley to say afterwards that we've all been there and suchlike, but the fact is that this was an extraordinary miss.
I'd have loved to have seen him snatch the winner late on, but it didn't happen.
To say that other than the miss he did well is largely true, but it's a bit like suggesting Shipman was a good GP apart from the murders.

Only in Scotland would a 30-year old journeyman striker with an indifferent career record make his international debut, miss a glorious chance from one foot out and be greeted with comments suggesting he did well and should get another chance!

I feel sorry for him as well but Iwelemu is not the answer to our problems up front. In fact I find it hugely depressing that we're back in the fashion of calling up mediocre players whenever they're in a bit of form. Does no one else remember Dougie Freedman?

Burley's squad selection and subs are starting to reminder me of the Vogts era to be honest.

Disagree, he was just offside, just that the linesman thought differently. And then there was his other blatant offside which he still had the cheek to play on from despite being several yards off.

If it had gone in though, I may have re-evaluted wink.gif
RiG
Personally I think he was marginally on but it is irrelevant at the end of the day. He missed and that's that.

Any notice the linesman started running back to the centre circle thinking we had scored and never flagged for a goal kick?
