Given all the speculation of the last few days regarding the possible poaching of our manager by another 1st division club, it got me thinking what would happen if our manager did leave and who would be in the frame to take over?
To be honest I was struggling to think of any that I would like.
Now, how about you? If your manager decided to call it a day or was pushed out the door tomorrow, who do you think would be the realistic candidates to take over? I know for some this would be a cause for celebration, however, in the cold light of day are there any stand out candidates that your club could afford and would possibly like to come to your club? Or are we talking washed up pundidts, lower league, up and coming bosses or the dreaded promotion from within?

I think Michael O'Neill at Brechin has the makings of a good manager and fits quite a few of the criteria that Geoff Brown would probably look for. Jim Weir would no doubt be strongly linked with the job but as much as I think he's a decent bloke, he's not the right choice for me. A few years down the line, it's not unthinkable that Paul Sheerin might be an option.
I was happy McInnes got the job at Saints as it's the sort of qualities he has that I like in managers.
Gerry Britton... well temporarly (sp?) anyway.

in a perfect world i'd say someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Walter Smith or maybe even Big Phil. But in a perfect world there wouldn't be rumours about Chis leaving
If he does go to Dens, Kenny Brannigan and Billy Dodds would probs decide to follow him. Skyline Drifter seems a knowledgable guy, he'd do till xmas, with qos_75 are his assistant, lol.
But to be fair i don't think Dundee could afford the Compo
The gambling alcoholic usual suspect of Steve Paterson would again be linked to County but again he wouldnt get near the job. I think Juninho (Hansa not the midfield maestro) would get the job before him. I can't see Deerek Adams going anywhere though, unless the Motherwell job came up as he has a prior history with them.

I like having Britton around the club, and I'm sure he's a good assistant, but he should never our manager again.
He was a disaster first time around, along with Whyte, and deserted a sinking ship at Stranraer. He'd be a truly uninspiring choice.
As for manager, I wouldn't mind Billy Stark. To be honest I can't think of any real options. Maybe try get an up and comer, or an assistant manager of one of the SPL clubs. Kenny McDowall might want to be his own man.

Gerry Britton did not leave a sinking ship at Stranraer. When he left the financial situation at the club was not out in the open and he would have no knowledge of it and he also left us almost guaranteed a play off place with a reasonably decent young squad. I do however agree at a higher level that he's better suited to the no. 2 role.

I thought he was pretty unpopular with Stranraer fans, considering he got them relegated from the 2nd, the year after they'd been in the first. My bad.
I know they lost a lot of good players but still I'd have thought another manager could have done better

Well you should mind. Nice bloke but then nice guys don't make good managers. Always happy to settle for the bare minimum in terms of ambition and I think he'd quite happily have stayed in the Saints job for 20 years, achieving third place in the First Division every season. The Queen's Park and Scotland U21 jobs suit him far better, where the focus is on development rather than necessarily success.

I wouldn't be excited by him, but there are worse options. It says more about the standard of candidates available, rather than how good a manager he is. I don't think there's many great options in the Scottish lower leagues just now.

Although Ross County fans might want to correct me, I've always thought Neale Cooper is a decent manager, took RC from the 3rd division to the 1st, took Hartlepool to the League 1 playoffs twice and seems to be a decent job with a small budget at Peterhead.
I'd be happy with Jimmy Nicholl too.

Now that i have calmed down after watching the last 2 uninspiring performances from us, i think i would be quite content for John Brown to continue for the moment.
Although this season has been pretty poor so far, there has at times been signs that there is a decent side trying to burst out. Hopefully once or injuries clear up and we can finally get our strongest team on the park i honestly believe we could be a decent side.
In saying that, if we lose to Morton next week John Brown can go and f**k himself ( only kiddin )

The realistic options would be Jim Duffy, John Robertson, Rowan Alexander, Derek Collins and Warren Hawke. I can't see Douglas Rae being willing to pay compensation for someone in a job, so that counts out Michael O'Neill, Allan Moore, Allan Maitland and Brian Reid, who would probably be options if Rae decides he's willing to pay for the best manager we can get.
Anyway, looking at the guys who aren't in managers jobs already, Duffy and Collins would be the favourites - for some bizarre reason quite a few fans want Duffy despite his managerial record, and being a former Morton captain he qualifies for the sentimental ex-Morton cack that Rae likes. A definite no for me, he's got enough clubs relegated as it is. Collins just because he's already at the club and it would make financial sense for Rae. Again no for me, he's partly responsible for the mess we're currently in.
There are rumours that Robertson's being lined up already. His record at ICT suggests that'd be a good thing, but Hearts, Livingston, Ross County and Derry fans would probably say otherwise. Just rumours for now anyway.
Alexander applied the last time, but f**k that for a game of soldiers.
As for the Hawke, he said the last time the job came up that he'd be interested in the job, but didn't feel he was ready yet. He said he'd been going to game around the country from the start of the season to build up a knowledge of the SFL but said then that he felt he needed another 2 years before he was ready to take a job, and business commitments meant he wasn't willing to take it on, but who knows now? Again, the ex-Morton factor that the chairman likes. I wouldn't like to see a Morton legend's reputation ruined though, and we badly need experience right now. No thanks, we can wait until he's already had a job and see what kind of manager he'll be. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as Morton manager one day though.
So, looking at all those options, we're up shit creek without a paddle with Irons or without him.
Of course, there's always the extremely long shot of Jimmy Calderwood on a short term deal if he's out of Aberdeen by the time Irons has left us.

Cooper in all fairness took the club as far as he could and he left as the right time as if he stayed we would have went down that season, But my god he did like to spend lots of dosh on very shit players including the likes of Peter Cormack Gary Higgins and the rather forgetable Tom Callaghan to name only a few duds. I'm gonna contradict that! It seems to me that Black got the job due to his impressing as assistant to Sandy. Which, in turn, was due to his being an ex Airdrie player, but I'm not sure we'd go down that route again. After all, there don't seem to be many out there. Paul Jack, Jimmy Sandison and Alan Lawrence seem to be doing well in the juniors, but I don't think that would be the answer. I'd certainly prefer it if we moved away from the ex-Airdrie thing (although I'd welcom Coyle back anytime).
