I'm supposed to be going up to some bowling club or social club near Hampden with my dads mate before going to the game, think they go up about 11ish, anyone know where it is? Hopefully it's got a good atmosphere with the songs blaring!!

If it's the Queens Park social club at lesser Hampden I'll be there biggrin.gif

The Queens Park social club is overlooking Lesser Hampden. Cheap beer, but it'll most likely be members only on Saturday.

There's a bowling club just along Carmunnock Road (heading south at the west end of the ground) from Hampden, and a Railwaymen's club further along the same road on the other side.

I immagine it'll be one of those two.

Queens Park Bowling Club is popular before games too. I'll be at The Queen's Park Cafe myself (getting preferential treatment at the bar seeing as it's my local!!).

Think there is a couple of pubs on the main street as you walk out of Mount Florida, but if you walk round to the South Stand at Hampden, and follow the road taking you out of the car park, behind the Vicky Wine and Chippy building on your right there is a pub called 'The Beechwood' The sign is on the main road so you should see it.

If you are going to the Beechwood, get the train to King's Park instead of Mount Florida. 5 mins walk from there, as opposed to a good 20 mins at least from Mount Florida. wink.gif

I've not been in there in months. Nice boozer.

I might have guessed that a Thistle type would pass on the earthy charms of Strathies and the Allison Arms in favour of the relative grandeur of the QPC. tongue.gif

Never been in Strathies (and never will be!), same goes for Kelly's. The Allison doesn't look the worst to me but I haven't been in there either. Down that neck of the woods I've only been in Heraghty's and Mulberry Street. The nearest pubs to my flat are the QPC and O'Donnell's/Tir Chonail. It is a complete no contest as you'll probably understand!!

In fact, the QPC is calling as I type. beerchug.gif

My crystal ball tells me the answer is yes. In fact, I'm getting a feeling for the Mount Florida area! 1eye.gif wink.gif

Aye, figured that. You, in fact, must live right near me, as they're the closest pubs to me as well... Sammy Dow's for me on Saturday, as always pre-game.

Well the Merchant City is good enough. That's where I thought there would be tartan army free pubs.

I'll probably be heading to the Railwayman's club, been there for the last 2 or 3 home games I've been at. Can't be arsed hiking it in from town and don't like Budda (as was) or Agenda.

I can see us going to Queens Park Cafe, seeing as The Mission is closed, although cheap double vodka reds at Corona are tempting.

See you there mate. I'll be the one wearing the Scotland strip. biggrin.gif

As another wee pointer regarding boozers for Saturday, 2 other pubs near Hampden (The Penny Farthing on Cathcart Road and The International on Aikenhead Road) both closed down recently and I'm not sure if they are back open again. Anyone who is intending to go to either of them best try to check first.
Furthermore, The Mire Bar next to The International went on fire a while ago and has now been demolished.

Guilty as charged.

Apprarently a car with an Airdrie bumper sticker has been spotted not far from where I live once or twice, but the owner remains incognito.

I've no intention of multiplying with anyone from Airdrie or thereabouts, as you well know... tongue.gif

Strathies is loony tunes. Good fun when busloads of Teuchters are down for the games though. Allison Arms is alright as old school bevvy menchants' pubs go. I've not been in Heraghty's.

Mulberry St was named the Taverna when I lived in those parts. Twas full of pretentious tossers trying to pretend thet they were in the West End rather then on Pollokshaws Road.

The QPC is easily the best of a bad bunch.

Edit: Just read the last post. I noticed that the Penny Farthing was closed when I waked into town the other day (cheers, Network Rail and RMT), but I didn't realie that the International and the Mitre were gone.

At this rate, the Clockwork is going to be the only pub within a mile of Hampden in about 6 months.

The Spur as also shut down.

Counting House then on to Corona's beerchug.gif

Not I. Although I have noticed a car parked on Calder Street with a St.Johnstone sticker. Very tempted to aim a fly kick at it after Saturday.

Re Mulberry Street, am I right in think there's a certain type of clientele in there? I've only been in a couple of times, and I don't think it was pretentiousness I detected, but the atmosphere certainly seemed rather queer...

Going back to the whole "pub before the game" debate, I also recommend Armstrong's in Battlefield. I've never been in before a home game, but I've watched a couple of away games in there (huuuge screen!), and regularly pop in for a game of pool. Good boozer.

Land Rover or Tractor?

I wouldn't have placed the Taverna/Mullberry St as a pink palace. More a haunt for champagne socialist, do gooding types.

Armstrong's is indeed good. There are once or two "characters" in there, but the clientele is mixed and friendly and the service pretty good. A pint is barely over 2 quid as well, which helps.

I imagine it's pretty busy on game days as they usually have bouncers on from early on. I drink in town before Scotland games whether I have tickets or not, so don't know just how mobbed it gets.

forres grump
The railwaymens club on carmunnock road is quality!!!!

Too hot inside tho, and its a fair old fight to get to the bar.

Aye, I think it's just a bit on the posh side compared to everything else nearby.
