Full Version: Brechin 3-1 Alloa
The Pie Shop > SPL and SFL Football > 2nd Division General Chatter

A good efficient performance from Brechin today, not as good as last week against Raith by all accounts but more than enough to beat a poor Alloa side today.

A slippy surface and heavy rain made conditions difficult for both sides and we had to endure a scare early on when Nelson spilled a low shot from distance, but he redeemed himself with a fantastic block at the feet of the Alloa attacker who looked set to slam into the net.

City started to control from then on and came close to opening the scoring when a cross found Davie White at the back post who reacted instantly to poke the ball off the post.

City took the lead on the half hour mark when Michael Paton made a good run down the left before supplying the perfect cross for the unmarked Gary Twigg, who headed effortlessly past the keeper.

And it was two before half time when City were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Charlie King stepped up and curled a magnificent shot into the top corner, keeper rooted to the spot.

Alloa came out in the second half with a bit more fight but it was City who always looked more likely to add to their lead. It should have been 3 when a horrendous passback from an Alloa defender went straight to Gary Twigg but he dallied on the ball and possession was lost, when squaring to Michael Paton would have been the obvious option.

With 73 minutes on the clock City wrapped the game up with the goal of the game. A fine passing move ended with Charlie King sidestepping a couple of defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper.

Alloa managed to pull a goal back with a scrappy effort two minutes later but the game was done and dusted by then.

Man of the match went to Neil Janczyk who had a good game, but felt it should have probably gone to Chucky who won the game with two very fine goals. Good to see Darren Smith returning to action as a substitute mid-way through the second half.

Dissapointed with the poor crowd today, while the weather was awful, 412 was poor especially after the way we've been playing of late. However, the gate was hardly helped by the 9 Alloa fans.

Next up is Stirling at Forthbank next week, another game we are more than capable of winning.

Obviously not there today (why pay out good money to watch the sh*te we're serving up at the moment) but it looks like a comfortable victory for Brechin.

Wonder what comments Maitland will have now. In the paper he was quoted as saying that if this goes on then either he will have to go or a quantity of players will have to go. Well....

If the players do not want to play for Maitland then they should be professional enough to want to play for the fans.

That's now a quarter of the season gone and we have 4 points. That really is disgraceful. Manager and players need to look at themselves and wonder if they should be at Alloa.

Totally agree. There is another outcome.Maitland and Ward offer their resignations before they are sacked.

Sod off and watch Stirling then if you don't/can't support the team

Couldn't agree more Steve. Very workmanlike performance from the players this afternoon. I had to leave just before the end due to family commitments. When I got home it had on the telly that the game was still in progress at 5.00pm. Did I miss anything? Good to see Darren coming on for the last 15mins. smile.gif

Away tae f**k. That would help eh? Home crowds are piss poor anyway now and you want people to go and watch another team.

I havnt seen you at every away game over the years.

The team are shite at the moment. Its not worth the travelling costs and entrance to watch shite. I'll be at every home game as I have a season ticket for about the 7th year now but it will certainly be the last time I buy one.

I have to say I'm very impressed with brechin's start to the season.
Tip of the hat for that I say.

I don't get to every game as I can't drive and getting to Brechin would have been difficult on public transport. However I will, when I can, support the team through good times and bad. If you're not willing to do the same then your just a glory hunter.

You know that's pish.

You know I've been going for 20 years. Week in week out even under the dark days of Lamont and McAuley and finishing 2nd bottom of the 3rd division.

What I cant accept right now is decent players not being able to play to a decent standard or not bothering their arses. Because that is what is happening right now.

Glory hunter?? Supporting Alloa?? Got to laugh at that one.

Fickle or fair-weather may be a more apt expression. Both of which I disagree with. It's hard, genuinely hard, to continue paying daft amounts of money to follow your team, especially away from home, when your side play like headless chickens or don't appear to give a damn. At least when they're genuinely gash, but trying their hardest to at least go down fighting, you can see the effort and it makes it easier to take the defeats.

We're fekkin ace, and struggle to get fans (see other thread) sad.gif

Which is the most galling aspect of our current situation. The manager has put together a squad capable of challenging at the top of the table. Instead we're bottom with a pathetic 4 points out of a possible 27. Clearly it cant go on much longer and whilst there is still a lot of goodwill from the Alloa support for the management team we really need to see some kind of signs of a turnaround very soon.

I'll just copy and paste my thoughts from the Duffle site onto here.

We started off OK and Graeme Brown had a good chance that he probably should have scored from. Brechin also looked dangerous without playing too well. As has so often been the case, however, we lost a cheap goal and after that never looked like getting back into the game. Brechin's opener was about as simple as you'll see, we failed to deal with a cross into the box and yet again left a man, Twigg, unmarked at the backpost to score. The second was a good freekick but from my angle, albeit I wasn't straight on, it looked as though Jelly stood too far to the side of his wall leaving the left hand side of his goal with a big gap for King to aim for.

In the second half we looked a bit better and huffed and puffed trying to find a way back into the game but we never really looked too likely to score. Indeed, it was Brechin who scored a third that was set up by some good movement from Brechin but once again our defenders were far too easily beaten as King waltzed past two with a single shimmy and slotted the ball past Jelly. We eventually got a late consolation as Townsley managed to scramble a ball into the net but we never really looked like getting back into the game.

Once again this performance just wasn't good enough.

I think Andy Ferguson is a good player and probably our best goal threat but in our last two games he really hasn't played well enough and for a striker of his size he is far too easily dealt with by defenders.

In the close season Allan Maitland got his signings spectacularly wrong and he seems to have assembled a squad of players without any real idea of how they should be lining up. Iain Campbell is a steady enough left back but he most certainly is not a left sided midfielder as he was asked to play on Saturday. Likewise Dougie Hill is a centre half not a left back. And we have brought Jamie back in, who was far and away our best player on Saturday, but there seems to be no clear idea of where he should be played as he is moved between being a second striker, a central midfielder and right winger.

The difference in movement between us and Brechin was so noticeable on Saturday. Our strikers are static in comparison to Brechin and our midfield never seem to make runs beyond the front players. It makes us very easy to defend against.

Things have got to turn around very soon or Allan Maitland will, unfortunately, have to leave the club. I want us and Allan to be a success but there are no real signs of it happening and being 2 points adrift at the bottom with only 4 points from the opening quarter of the season is just not good enough.

Brechin is one of the easier grounds to get to via Public Transport from Stirling/ Alloa- you get the train to Montrose and then one of the frequent buses from there to Brechin and they even stop right outside the ground.

I thought football forums were about debate. Christ ,football is a game of opinions but in Alloa it seems that if you have a differing point of view ,you get told to "sod off and support Stirling."

I have had the same thing replied to me Bsd recently for merely stating a point.

We are struggling at the moment and fans are frustrated and enitled to air their view. I seldom agree with many of the points but its about having a debate and discussion.

He had a stint at Arbroath for a while. Always thought he had his head screwed on until that happened, mind you he jacked it in after a year or so; obviously it took a while for the medication to kick in.

Appreciate you're frustrated but that's a bit harsh. I don't know the guy but anyone who has a season ticket for Alloa should be applauded. There are literally thousands of people living in Alloa who go to 0 games per season. Someone who "only" attends 75% of the games is maybe not the most dedicated fan in the world, but they are certainly doing more than their fair share for their local club.

It does have to be said though, that if Alloa were to come good and (heaven forbid) somehow make the playoffs, then those who made the trip to Brechin will enjoy it all the more.

Erm... that would have been before they axed the No.30 bus and replaced with the No.33 which only turns up every hour now and gives you a lengthy tour of Montrose and a hospital for extra excitement. There was one Alloa fan that I met at the bus stop who'd got the train up though. Top marks to 'John' for effort!

Anyway, what a waste of money rebuilding the Alloa - Stirling link if the Waspies won't even use it for the away days... gees!

Ah that'll be my good friend Ice Wasp.

To be fair a gang of us did use the train up to Arbroath earlier in the season. Good day out but a pish performance again. On the subject of a poor Alloa crowd - what did you really expect? Playing pish, bottom of the league and money tight at the moment.

You were the lucky one.

It was mostly your under 19s.

Floodlights are a nightmare. One of them was broken but even if it had been working I understand they are not up to standard. Groundsmen mentioned that they were hoping to replace them with one in each corner but the estimated £100k was a bit of a problem.

Isnt it for all of us these days? rolleyes.gif

Dont knock our u19's. The way we're playing just now I'd be tempted to give them all a run out for the Arbroath game.

Should leave the floodlights as they are. Maybe we wont be able to see how bad we are soon.

Big result for him. Could put him in line for the East Fife job when Baikie suffers a few more defeats.

Edit: Clearly Dalziel signs quality players now...Chris Fahey now plays for them.
