Ok, so I got a new laptop the other week, and I'm astounded at how quickly the hard disk space is being used up on it. Every day, it seems to be leaking at least 1GB, despite the fact all I really use it for just now is browsing the net and listening to tunes on Napster. Between when I switched it on this morning and when I checked just now, there was a difference of 2GB, and I haven't downloaded a thing all day. In fact I've not long since turned it on since I came home from work. Is this normal for laptops? It seems to have used up nearly as much space in 2 weeks as my desktop has in a year, and I've downloaded about 4000 songs on my desktop PC.

I should point out that the machine runs Windows Vista, dunno if that has anything to do with it.

Thoughts?

memory's something completely different to hard drive space, which you're talking about. Are you sure its leaking it when you're not doing anything, or is someone else downloading stuff on it? go to my computer and click once on C drive - on the left hand side it should show you used and free space, and it shouldnt change much without downloading things like torrents, mp3s, updates to programs etc - especially not by 2 gigs!

I had some HD space issues recently and used a programme called WinDirStat, which shows graphically whats using up what space.

It may well be a load of rubbish (as someone will no doubt be along to say) but it's a quick way to see whats hogging up space.

Sorry aye, HD space, thats what I meant.

No-one else is using the laptop. Since I got it two weeks ago, it's went down from 175GB free space down to 124GB. And it's lost 2GB today alone!

Cheers, I ran that and it appears 20GB of my 'C' drive is listed as 'Unknown' huh.gif

I'll see if that's the category that's constantly rising over the next few days.
