by the police en route
too many local clubs suffering at the hands of these wankers who claim to

Vandals destroy football club's pavilion in blaze
Date: 22 September 2008
By SUE GYFORD
A FIRE which destroyed the pavilion of a football club has been blamed on
vandals by club officials.
Fire crews were called to the blaze at the Bonnyrigg Rose FC club grounds after
the building was set alight at around 2.30am on Saturday morning.
The building was deemed unsafe after the blaze, and was bulldozed later on
Saturday morning.
Chairman Seamus McHale said vandals had been found setting rubbish bins at the
ground alight earlier in the week. He said: "Sheer madness by a crowd of
hooligans did this.
"They were caught trying to set the bins alight on Wednesday but no action was
taken.
"We've lost strips, nets, training gear and goodness knows what else. We used
the hut for storing a lot of things.
"We would like to ask the supporters for their help in our hour of need. We're
flying high in the league just now and this is the last thing we need.
"This club is part of the community and plays a big part in Bonnyrigg life. We
would like to rally the locals to support and help out an already hard-working
committee."
Manager Alan Miller added: "We're gutted. The players have been terrific since I
came here and to see all their hard work destroyed like this is frustrating.
We're on a roll and wanted to keep the momentum going. Anyone who wants to help
were happy to talk to."
Crews from Dalkeith were on site for three hours using a hose reel, two pumps
and a special unit.
The wooden structure in Dundas Park, Lothian Road, Bonnyrigg, was left with
nothing but its frame intact and declared unsafe the following day.
A fire service spokeswoman said it was thought there may have been asbestos
panels in the roof.
The team's scheduled home game on Saturday against Whitburn was postponed.
Groundsman Bill Taylor, 72, said the building had been shared with the pigeon
club, Bonnyrigg Homing Society, and both groups had lost a large amount of
equipment.
He said: "It's all been bulldozed and we're going to take it away today. We've
lost the old changing rooms and committee room and our canteen for selling pies.
It's like 117 years of tradition has gone down the chute. We've lost photos,
memorabilia... We've rescued very little."
He said fundraising efforts would start straight away: "Once we get this site
cleared we'll have to start raising money to replace it, which won't be easy in
these times."
"We run the club on a voluntary basis, we all belong to the place. I've lived
here all my life - it's an institution."
