I'm looking to finally connect to X-Box live after buying a new laptop at the weekend, which finally prompted me to set up the wireless router I've had sitting in its box for about a year!!

Now, I'm aghast at the price of Microsoft's wireless adaptor (£60!!), and was wondering if I could do this another way.

At the moment, we have the 2 house PC's connected via an ethernet cable in the wireless router (neither have wireless adaptors and besides, they''re both close to the router anyway), and the laptop connected wirelessley. Am I able to connect to the 360 with an ethernet cable directly from my laptop (which has built in wireless)? Or if I'm gonna use an ethernet, does one end need to be connected to the router?

You might be able to bridge it from your laptop, but it would take a smarter man than me to explain how to go about it.

You can get cheaper than the official wifi modules, have a check on the xbox forums for compatible ones, the good thing about the 360 one though, is that it clips in, so you dont have anything unsightly in place. Easiest way is just to connect it via ethernet cable, if you have a telephone socket near where the 360 sits, you could move your router to there.

You can connect the ethernet cable to your laptop and use Internet Connection Sharing. Or you could connect the ethernet cable straight to the router. I'd probably recommend straight to the router but the laptop will work.

I tried to bridge connections like that before and failed miserably. Ended up having to just run a 50m cable from the xbox to the router.

Sorry to gatecrash this thread but the XBox doesn't have built in wifi connectivity?? Plus having to pay for XBox Live.......

I used to have an ethernet cable running from y router to the Xbox and it worked perfectley. Then I realised it was a lesser console and got the PS3

Well, I finally got the Xbox up and running and connected to Xbox Live.....and just as I thought, my first game of Fifa online, the guy went Man Utd (yawwwnn), and spanked me 3-0 with me not able to get anywhere near him. Ah well.

The only thing the ps3 does better than the 360, is having blu-ray, its got a poorer graphics chip, and poorer online service. You wasted your money if you got rid of one to get the other.

I got the official wireless adaptor second hand from gamestation for £40. The only difference is that it wasnt in box, however, all you need to do it plug it in.

Just played as Hibs against Villa, lost 6-0, not even a shot at goal. I am utter mince at this. I don;t know how you do half the moves or anything. This is exactly why I didnae want to go online

You dont get better online if you dont play, bear in mind people have been playing online for a year at this particular game.

Even if I've only had my Xbox back for a month (from getting the red rings of death for the first time), and already it crashed during a game of COD4, and has caught the red rings yet again.

PS3 here I come, at least it wont break every five minutes.

Getting better...as Scotland, I lost on pens to England and Germany after 0-0 draws. The England game was the worst as I hit the underside of the bar in the last second of normal time

Scored my first goal in a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool as Everton.

Still havenae came anywhere close to properly winning though. I find it very difficult to actually build any kind of attack, due to having about three men on me as soon as I get the ball (yet I cant do this when the opposition has it)

Won my first online game of Fifa at about the tenth attempt when my Sunderland team beat some dude's Blackburn team 1-0. My only shot of the game went in, whereas he had chance after chance, and I even saved a last minute penalty! I bet he was utterly fuming.

I am absolutely rubbish at this. I've no idea how other players evade tackles, I simply cannot go past a player, and none of my guys are ever in good positions, whereas whoever the opposition is runs through my team at will. Very frustrating.

I wasnt toying, i was trying as hard as i could. I would have said Jim Hamiltons chip when i forgot the buttons and meant to smash it was goal of the game though
