Can anyone please explain why the fans sing "Doe a deer"?

It has to be the most cringe worthy song ever sung at a football ground!
glasnost
That’s why they sing it I think –they love to be cringweorthy and embarrassing. It suits them I suppose.

I know we are going to agree on something at sometime on this board glasnost but I just don't know when!

The song is cringe worthy and embarrassing but the Tartan Army is not.

They do our country a service wherever they go. Has any country ever said when the Scots supporters come to town....."oh no lets get the riot police out the Scots are coming to town".

Thats a phrase they reserve for when the Inglish and Dutch and the like visit.

Apparently a chunck of the Macedonian police *were* indeed dressed in all their finery for the Scotland match huh.gif
glasnost
Just because they don’t cause riots doesn’t mean that they aren’t cringeworthy and embarrassing.

P.S. Macedonia!!!

Anyone care to have a stab at answering the original post?

Anyone?

It's to do with a newspaper headline mistake from an Austrian away game.
BRAVELANEY
its hardly the most cringeworthy song sung at a game, its actually quite uplifting when sung, those who were at the away game in the san siro especially and even the home game against france will have experienced it.

On paper i suppose it is a bit cringe but sung by thousands its quite an anthem believe it or not, there are no rules!
Günther
I can't stand the song one bit. It is very Cringy indeed! It's even worse when you go into a TA Pub before or after games and they play the actual original...

For the record I'm a big Scotland fan and have Travelled Away fuck knows how many times with the TA.

Lets face it, most football songs are cringeworthy when you think about it. At least the one in question does not actually offend anyone. The 'folksongs' sang at some matches are more tedious and cringeworthy than this, without doubt.

Imagine singing a song from a musical - crazy!

I cringe every time I hear celtic's self-proclaimed 'greatest fans in the world' famous songs. You know the ones wink.gif about another country!

Personally I do find Do A Deer a bit cringeworthy but when it's sung in a stadium by thousands of fans it creates a great atmosphere. Wouldnt be singing it in the pub though huh.gif

Good. I cringe every time I see followers of Scotland, you know the self-proclaimed 'greatest fans in the world', acting like they normally do abroad.

Quite possibly. But it *does* refute your suggestion that riot police are reserved for certain groups only

Err, yeah, except the Scotland fans are given praise by nationals of countries we visit. Celtic fans just decided amongst themselves laugh.gif

The song is perfect for the TA, as it goes on forever!

I was in the San Siro that night, and it was immense. Definetly does create an atmosphere.

I didn't say they hadn't.

I've not heard of any city that has complained after a Scotland trip in the years I've travelled. I'll be quite happily proved wrong however.

It's quite obvious, and has been discussed in the past.

I, and others, have friends in cities which have had the "Army" on "manoevres" and haven't appreciated their town square being filled with these characters and their behaviour. They were delighted when they fucked off back home.

That's not to say they are in the majority, but it is a complete myth that the TA are loved by all that they come across.

That point has been made, yes.

The finery post was in answer to khenny saying

Thats a phrase they reserve for when the Inglish and Dutch and the like visit.

which, of course, is complete self-serving bollocks

Paco
Doh a Deer is a bit embarrassing I suppose, yet I still quite like it...

Creates a great atmopshere, and this is shown, as folk have said, from the match in the San Siro. I'm sure you've all seen the video, it's been posted often enough. It was quality at home to France as they started to turn the screw towards half time too, really lifted the crowd and the players.

Is it any worse than singing, for example, You'll Never Walk Alone or I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles? Both songs that have f**k all to do with the actual teams playing.

At least the words haven't been changed to connect it to Scotland, like Manchester United's 'Take Me Home, United Road'... well, not yet anyway. That truly is cringeworthy.

Yes I know as you may have seen me say on here, showing my utter disdain for them. Fortunately, they tend to only turn up at the bigger games such as Milan or Barcelona. It’d be easier to find a group of reasonable huns than to find a group of these kilted up embarrassing idiots at a Celtic game in the likes of Donetsk, Moscow etc.

And thank heaven for that.

So, to sum up, you don't like the look of football fans in a kilt. Agreed? Fine. Each to there own. Can we change the record now?

No, it’s the behaviour that goes along with it.

I didn’t start playing the record by the way nor is it mine to change.

I think you will find, that that particular song was raked out because of the gorgeous blonde lassie who was walking round the track...I tried to start a rendition of "NIPPLES, NIPPLES WE WANT NIPPLES..." myself, but thought better of it... laugh.gif

As to the origianal question, I love Scotland, but despise Doe a Deere...think it goes back to qualifying for Euro 96 by beating Austria...could be wrong though... wink.gif

Celtic fans walk into cities, never hurt a soul, drink, but not too much, always find a toilet to pee in (never leave a bit on the pan), attend the game, dont shout or swear, head back to their hotels, sleep, get up in the morning, clean up any mess they might have uncharacteristicly made, then all join hands and skip home quite the thing.

its amazing what changes between them and other football fans the minute they go to an away game!! laugh.gif

I have absolutely no idea what Celtic fans are like abroad.

My point was made in answer to the untruth that Celtic fans determine their own status themelves, whereas Scotland fans do not.

Glasnost are you a kid on irishman ? You seem to rip into Scotland and the TA wherever possible , maybe youd be best off the TA board cause your little silly remarks about your homecountry (im guessing your scotish) are boring . thumbup2.gif
