Full Version: New Mobile Phone

Having come to the conclusion that my Sony Ericsson W810i has committed suicide, I'm looking for a new mobile phone. Ideally, it should have a decent video camera (more than 2MP), Bluetooth, decent storage for video and music (ideally with some kind of music walkman facility) and FM Radio. I'm with Pay as you Go on O2 and don't really want to have to go to the hassle of changing network, and although Pay Monthly opens up loads of handset options, I can't make that kind of long term financial commitment.

Which begs the question: what is the cheapest, non-flip up/slide phone that fulfills my criteria?

And please in the name of god let it be a Sony Ericsson!

I have a K850i and it's probably my favourite mobile I've had over the years.

I will give you my shitter for free. W200i with fucked screen and falls apart when dropped. Also, no bluetooth.

Your concern is touching Adam wink.gif

Edit:

As an idea of the kind of thing I'm looking for, I paid £110 or so for my Sony Ericsson W810i just over 2 years ago. I'm slightly low on the cash front so I probably can't go over £100 this time, and ideally I'd like to be paying less than that.

I notice the Carphone Warehouse have the K800i on offer with o2 for £90. This does pretty much everything I need my phone to be able to do, but a lot of the reviews seem to mention a poor battery life and it being quite heavy. I've never been keen on the "joystick" either.

What are the experiences of others with this phone if you've ever had it

Sony Ericsson C902

Got this a couple of weeks ago and it's a good phone.

Go for the t650i.

I was in same boat as you. Wanted a simple pay as you go ericsson phone that didnt have a flip or slide and was small enough. This fits the bill. Plus hardly anyone has one - as they were special edition for a couple of months only a couple years back but you can still pick them up on ebay and the likes. Love my phone

W880i for £89.99 from tesco direct. Fits all your needs really, though the camera is only 2 mega pixel.

Going to buy one myself this week.

Was considering this, but it doesn't have an FM Radio.

the W890i is basically the same phone, but has a radio and quadband... so they hike another £60 onto it mad.gif

Nae bother. But seriously I just ordered this but it ain't Sony Ericsonn and it is contract - Samsung J700.

Few more cheap phones: http://www.phones4u.co.uk/special-offers/Index2.asp.

I'm tempted by the Sony Ericsson W580i. It's a slide phone, but basically has the same spec as my old phone and is a bit cheaper.

Please tell me you are not taking that contract? It's terrible. You can get so much better at that price range.

That looks like an awful phone Adam.

If you're going for a contract, for gawd's sake get a good phone out of it!

£60 for 18 months, 400 minutes and 500 texts seems pretty damn good to me.

My mate got the phone and really likes it. It's worth a chance. If I don't like it aI'll give it to my dad and take my old phone back.

Sorry I'm not too familiar with contract: is that £60 in total for the 18 months or £60 per month? Do you get 400 minutes and 500 texts a month or is that in total?

It's got a 1.3 megapixel camera. That's pretty poor quality for a new phone.

It's £30 a month for 400 minutes abd 500 texts but for the first 16 of the 18 months you can reclaim back the money you hav paid straight from your bank account.
Exuberant
I would never spend that kind of money per month on a phone. I top up £10, and get 300 texts to use for the month (O2 text deal). That means I get through £10 in about 2 months.

I've had my phone fixed twice for that reason! This time, they've changed the material the keys are made from and seems much sturdier. I'll keep you posted...

Slight snag is the £349 price tag or £399 for the 16Gb model.

I've only just gone back to my W910i after it had to go away for repair again. They took so long they just me a new one which now takes the number of W910is I have had in the last 12 months to 4. After one day it hasn't crashed but that doesn't fill me with confidence.

I'm sure the deal itself in terms of number of texts or minutes is fine for you but you can get it a lot cheaper from o2 or Orange directly. If you had the choice of a Ford Ka or Bentley would you say no I'll have the Ka but pay the Bentley price tag?

What company is that with?

I'm currently on PAYG and I'm sick of it. I've started using it more and more often and I'm finding that I'm spending an absolute fortune on top ups. The phone itself cost me £180 at the time (Samsung G600) and with the amount I've spent on top ups I don't even want to think about how much I've paid in total.

Will be looking to get on a decent contract soon.

My last two phones have been cashback ones and reclaimed the cash back without any problems. Hopefully this time it'll be the same.

O2 have a cracking sim only deal at the moment but it is only available until the end of the month.

Now until the end of September, you can save an extra £5 a month on our £25 simplicity tariff. Just pay £20 a month and get 600 mins + unlimited texts each month for life.

Keep your G600 and just get this sim card deal. A bargain at £20 a month for life or only 30 days notice if you find something better. I just signed up for this last month and bought a G600 from Orange for £89. It's also easy to unlock. wink.gif

That's a decent shout, as I'm not particularly bothered about a new phone. I quite like this one.

Before I go for it though I'm having a look. Is anyone here with 3? What are they like and why are there prices so good?
750 Mins/Unlimited texts - Free handset (Samsung Soul, or SE C902) - £25/month ???

Surely that's not right?

Did Orange charge you to unlock the phone??? If so, how much?

Did it myself. Just a case of entering a couple of code numbers.

You couldn't possibly provide a link for that, could you?

I've searched google but there seem to be a lot of people with problems after using some of the suggested methods of unlocking (the IMEI no. setting itself to all zeros making the phone unusable).

PS I've just went for the Virgin Media £10/month, 300 mins/300 texts just now as I actually think that will be enough for my needs. If not, I can change my tariff at the end of any month, so it'd be pretty easy to change to their 600/600 one for £20 which would definitely be enough for me anyway.
Deeboy
I've got 2 months left of my o2 contract and can only seem to see 18 month contracts being offered from them now?

Anyway I'm looking at taking the Samsung Omnia from Vodafone with 500 texts and 200 minutes for £35 per month for 12 months.. Quite a bad deal but worth it for the phone alone which you'd expect to pay £450 - £600 for sim free.

Anyone with Vodafone or even more so have the Omnia?

I got my iPhone yesterday, it is the mutts nuts.

Selling my iPod touch and HTC touch mobile to balance the books somewhat and keep Mrs Div happy although I don't have any monthly costs as the SIM is provided by work biggrin.gif

Got my iPod, Sat Nav, Push mail, Phone, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for the car and mobile web all in one brilliant system and without the absolutely horrific Windows Mobile OS to slow it all down to a snails pace. Fucking marvellous.

Just needs the slingplayer client to be developed for it and it will be complete smile.gif

A bit late maybe but I just recently purchased this:

Cracking Phone, 5MP camera, Sat-Nav built in, touch screen. Bluetooth, 8GB memory, which can be upgraded to 16GB.

All in All, I feel its a cracking phone smile.gif

My deal:

£35 p/m, 18 months, 600 mins, unlimited texts, 6 months half price.

Brilliant deal for what is an outstanding phone IMO.

Could have taken £40 p/m got the same texts + calls with unlimited net usage, although it would have been £20 before the contract started, but they threw in a free I-Pod. Didn't want it though, already had one tongue.gif

My company have told us that we need to get e-mail on the move and are offering us 2 choices. The IPhone or Blackberry Pearl 8100

We work of Microsoft Exchange so both present no problems with regards to setting up and it's up to us what phone we pick.

I read Div's review of the IPhone and thought it looked really good, however on further (limited) research people seem to go with the Pearl. The problem I see with the Pearl is the small screen, especially reading any attachments.

Anybody offer some advice to a technophobe?
