Continuously at 1 second intervals whenever I have Media Centre running and I try to watch TV or when my 360 is streaming.

Its been like that ever since I’ve had the PC

Any ideas?

Cheers smile.gif

Does everything work fine, and can you describe the beeps. Do they come from the motherboard or some application (ie: can you turn down the volume and it disappears).

Yip everything is in perfect working order even when beeping, just find it very annoying when I'm trying ti watch the telly tongue.gif

I'm pretty sure it comes from the motherboard, the beeps themselves sound really kind of harsh and short, if thats any help

Gogol Bordello are fucking guid btw wink.gif

Ta, they are, yes .. smile.gif

As I say, can you mute your system (either through windows volume or manually unplugging your speakers) and the sound continues?

Normally when that happens it's the motherboard trying to tell you something, although that tends to happen at the start (ie: try removing all your memory modules then booting the machine). Each different motherboard manufacturer has a different combination of beeps.

The thing is I feel it's more software driven, as in an application is trying to tell you something rather than the motherboard. However to find that out, let me know if you still hear the sounds when muted.

I presume that the PC is fine at all other times?

Yep,

If I mute the speakers/unplug them the sound continues.

Aye, I know a bit about beeps in terms of a motherboard, but in this case the beeps wont stop even if I shut down Media Centre so I usually reboot the machine.

The PC is fine I built it last year and I've had nae bother with it whatsoever, apart from this minor niggle.

From the top of my head the specs are;

1.8 dual core intel
2GB Ram
580GB
256MB GT8600

I'll get my motherboard specs when I get hame.

find out what motherboard you have (if you don't know you can use the numbers shown on your BIOS), and have a look at the manual (it should be online, most are) and see what types of "beep" it is.

Does the beeping start the moment you power the PC on?

Nope, only when I'm logged on and running Media Centre

Looking around it doesn't seem like a common problem (if it is, there's normally a few hits on google for it) which makes me think it's an application (or driver) causing it. It's becoming one of those problems you can only diagnose by seeing it in action.

How often does it beep, is it a regular "heart beat" and if so is it frequent (1 a second, every 2 seconds, 5 seconds, etc)?

It's just like a heartbeat, frequency of 1 a second.

Could be really gay and record the sound then upload it here cool.gif

Could be an over heating warning.

Go into the BIOS and check the current temperatures and somwhere in there will likely be triggers for over heating warnings.

When you exit Media Centre does the beeping stop?

Think I've tried something like that before, the temps are sitting around 35~40oC anyway with the alarms turned off

Nope, doesn’t stop until I restart the pc

Could be the motherboard overheating, check your fans arent clogged with dust.

If your temps are fine, then just disable the beeping in the bios.

Heh... or you could find out what is actually wrong and fix it.. wink.gif

Try upgrading the bios, also what make of power supply do you have? unsure.gif

Upgrading the bios to someone who dosent know what they are doing is probably not a good idea.

I never enable the pc speaker, it really does serve no purpose. Modern cpu's have thermal protection to throttle if the temps get too high. Most time the temps are wrong are from an unstable seating of a cpu cooler or a dodgy sensor (most sensors are woefully inaccurate).

Download realtemp to get an accurate reading, to give an idea of the difference bios to real temps can be, my real temp probe is at 28/31C and my core temp program (same as bios) is at 38/41, a 10C difference in temps. The real temp probe has been calculated to be correct, but if i went on the bios temps, my pc would start beeping 10C before it would need to (not that it ever would with a tuniq tower cooling it).

MSI Live update Clicky makes it easy for anybody to update the bios.........

I can't believe you said that. When booting up the beeps are the ONLY thing that will tell you what is wrong with your BIOS/CMOS setup.

After doing some reading I think it's caused by incompatibility between the via chipset and the graphics card (but i'm not 100% sure) try another graphics card* and see if that fixes the beeping.

Either that or try another power supply.....

* Obviously another model of graphics card, preferably a ATI one wink.gif
Ric

Rarely the easiest thing to replace, and I doubt it's the power supply. I've O/C'ed quite a few machines in my time resulting in a serious lack of power, but the machine crashes or hangs when that happens. Certainly not a beep.

In regard to the graphics card, that might be a better route to go down. What card is it you have superandy?
jay_7
Odd that the incompatibility only shows up when accessing Media Centre though... Or could it be that Media Centre uses DX10?

Replacing a power supply takes around 5-10 minutes tongue.gif also a number of random pc related problems are caused by the power supply being duff but I agree it's unlikely to be the cause in this situation.

I'm thinking I might have to replace mines just now as I'm having power related problems just now........... Hard drives/Dvd driver keep powering off at random dry.gif

I will test you with a stopwatch, and see how quickly you can swap out a PSU in a Dell box. I spent about an hour swapping mine.

New dells use standard ATX power supplys now so they are quicker to do, but because of all the cable tidying, its still going to take some time, everythings tie wrapped and strapped down.
