Full Version: Have We Got A Playoff Place Or Not?
The Pie Shop > International & Other Football & Other Sports > Tartan Army Ramblings

I have heard too many different stories from people.

Scenarios

1. We do have a 2nd place playoff place because our group is so small

2. Every single group in the competion each has a 2nd place playoff place, regardless or group size

3. No group has a playoff place. The top two are straight through

Can someone please wrap this up once and for all???
glasnost
Scotland doesn't have a play off place as they are shite and will finish 3rd at best.

That do?

The European qualification games started in August 2008 after EURO 2008.[4] Eight groups of six teams and one group of five will contest the European qualifying competition. As a result the nine group-winners will qualify directly, while the best eight of the nine second-placed teams will contest home and away play-off matches for the remaining four places.

Okay then, there are 9 groups.

There are 8 play-off places.

The best 8 runners up go into the play off stages.

Thats better.

Lets hope all the celtic players refuse to play for celtic 2 weeks before the big Scotland games start. give them plenty of rest.

No point trying to play diddy games when the big ones are comin up

It's why losing in Macedonia was such a big deal, there isn't a large amount of room for error given that second is not guaranteed anything.

Thats it. Also, am i right in saying that the other 8 groups will remove the bottom team, or 'whipping boys' from the stats to determine who is best runners up? Ie, beating san marino 10-0 and finsihing second will count for hee haw??

Correct in order that they have the same amount of teams/games for comparison as the smallest group.

Methinks that's a bitter response from someone whose country's day in the footballing sun has come and gone.

Methinks that's a lazy response from someone who lives their life based on stereotypes.

There are 9 Groups and 8 play-off places so I presume that results against the bottom team will be discarded in all groups except ours

So in the other groups you could finish third but end up in the play offs ahead of a second placed team when the results against the bottom team are discarded?

Nope.

From the nine second placed teams, the one with the worst record against the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th placed sides in their group won't make the playoff.

No, he is correct. Say two teams are equal second in another (6 team) group, and one of the two is ahead on goal difference, after removing their results against the sixth placed team, the team in third may be elevated to second. I think.

I just re-read your post and realised I misread it, you are correct, but so is the original poster.

I think you may be wrong. My reading of it is;

1st to 6th in each group stands regardless of results against the bottom team. These results are only disgarded when all the teams in second place in each group are compared with each other to determine which of them qualify.

Lets not worry about this until we play Holland at home and know where we stand.
